rawdawg you are going to end up very bitter and frustrated the worries you are getting yourself into.

If you don't want a Mac fine move on. If you can't or won't build a PC go into the market place and buy one. Let me assure you as someone almost eighty, wasting hours on frustration is NOT an enjoyable past time.

Just a question to all - there was a time when building some customized PCs was actually cheaper than buying from a named brand/company. Over the years there were times when it was cheaper just to get the name brand and add a part or two (usually drives). Is it really cheaper to build one these days if it is in the direction of a "graphics workstation" as the OP somewhat hints? I see some gamer boxes that would perhaps need only more storage and possibly a different video/graphic card, HP's Z line up, and more...

Any thoughts here?

If you're looking at a PC that's $500 or under, then you're not likely going to be able to build one yourself that's cheaper and comparable.

But... if you're looking to build a performance machine, then you could spend less to obtain higher end parts than you would get if you purchased it prebuilt.

Thanks for the reply. Would that apply as well to some of the barebones systems that go from time to time on sale? I'm just trying to get a feel for how things have change from my days of building custom PCs.
