Every alarm clock app I've tried requires you to leave the app running with your phone on all night. Anybody know of an one that works without having to do that? Paid or free, doesn't matter to me.

Yes, and I usually use that one. But since I was late to work Monday, I'm looking for a good back up.
Every alarm clock ever made has its flaws. My alarm clock app went blaring off at the time I set it today. If you want to complain about three days of glitches, don't forget that standard alarm clocks all have potential flaws. If your power goes out overnight, many plug-in clocks won't work unless you have a battery in there to keep the memory going. Even if you do that, what if the battery is dead? Same type of issue for a wind-up alarm clock, if you can still find one.
If you want to be safe, buy a $10 alarm clock or clock radio and set it as well as your iPhone alarm. Aside from Jan. 1 and 2, I have had no problems with mine that weren't caused by me, such as a.m. is not the same as p.m.
Sleeping only about 4~ hours a night due to having a busy lifestyle, this is the only alarm that can wake me up consistently each morning

To give a serious, iPhone based answer to your question, I use Alarm Clock Pro as well as the built in alarm.

Beyond whose fault the whole thing is, I don't understand how people can afford a $600 phone with a $100 a month bill, but can't buy a $5 alarm clock.
I can buy an alarm clock. I just don't want to. I've got enough crap in my house as it is. I don't need anything else sitting around collecting dust.

- run on the background, and
- wake you with iPod music or alarm sounds that play for more than about 20 seconds.
Alarm apps can run on the background but when they ring they are limited to about 20 seconds sounds.
This is the reason why we haven't upgraded our app to run on the background, since it's supposed to wake up hard sleepers, it can't play alarm for just 20 seconds.

I think the bigger question is why SHOULD a $5 alarm clock be better at telling time and setting alarms than an iPhone. It's ludicrous IMHO. The moron in charge of the calendar/alarm software at Apple needs to be fired immediately and replaced with somebody who has a high school diploma. This is not rocket science!

Talk about a jarring experience!
The wind up old style mechanical clock is great. Even if the power goes off it still works IF you remember to wind it.
I don't know what extra features your clock has but most clocks around here just sit on the bedside table. They don't really do anything else but that. Does your clock get up after you go to bed and clean house or something ?
