Check out the QC20 if you can still get one.

I have used the Bose QC 35 , Sony WH-1000XM2, Beats studio, AirPods pro , Sony WF-1000XM3 and the Beats solo pro. What I currently have is the AirPods pro and Beats solo pro. With the best ANC for on ear or over ear is the Sony’s with the WH-1000XM3 ( the 2 was good but I assume 3 is as good if not better and reviews have said as much ) and the WF-1000XM3 for in ears. The WH is the over ear and WF is the earbuds style.

What sold me on the AirPods and Beats is the H1 chip. Simple connection with it being the most stable.

I use Sony 1000x over ear NC headphones for planes. blocks the babies and you can connect cable to plane. More comfortable long term, keeps my ears warmer and blocks out almost everything. I fall asleep sitting down in them. the AirPods Pro gave me ear pain after an hour. also no cable plug in. AirPods Pro NC works pretty well if you can keep the sunction in ears.

ive been using the 1000x for 3.5 years now and they work great but my sis just got the 1000xm3 newest version of my originals and hers are lighter and designed a bit more comfortable.

Try a bunch. The Sony WH-1000XM3 is probably the best overall choice.

I have them and I must say flying with them does change the game. I am a bit of headphone junkie myself. It is not even funny or practical to have that many headphones. Anyway I have the following type of headphones:

1. Noise isolating over the ear (Senheiser). They do isolate noise quite well but are quite heavy. Also they are wired so they are better to be used in office/home than for travel.
2. Shure earbuds. They are not noise canceling but have good noise isolation because they are earbuds that you plug into your ear. They are portable and sound nice (as they are in ear monitoring solution for performers). I have two cables for them - regular 3.5 mm jack and Bluetooth connector so I can use them both ways. However they do not work for flights IMO. I get slight ear pain/tension when using earbuds for longer periods of time. I get the appeal because of the portability but with the way I travel (usually need connecting flights so it takes like 5-6 hours) I find them not a good choice.
3. Wired Sony earbuds that when combined with Sony MP3 player have NC. Basically as above. Good noise cancelling but earbuds do have their side effects when using longer.
4. Sony WH-1000XM3. The best choice for me. Yeah they take more space but the NC they offer is awesome. They are light enough. No clamping force and no ear pain or tension. Compared to the monitoring ones (Senheiser and Shure) have more bass and it took me some time to get used to it, but the sound quality is good enough for the music I listen to. Plus my phone is Sony and this way I use LDAC codec which does change the audio quality.
5. Few other Sonys (over ear or earbuds) and Philips but I won't get into details as they are not relevant for this discussion.

I have not tried NC earbuds but I am not sure that it makes a lot of sense. Most earbuds are noise isolating enough to be honest due to the fact that they go directly in your ear. I personally would get either good quality regular earbuds (that isolate enough) or over the ear NC headphones.

If you want Bluetooth earbuds and want something that is easily integrated with iPhone than yes AirPods make sense. As the first two models are not earbuds, the third one is the only one that makes sense for flights. I assume that even without the NC on, it should work adequate as it has physical noise isolation.

I can say, having just gotten them this week prior to flying back from the US to the UK, that they were INCREDIBLE for the flight home. I wore them the entire time (medium tips) with some brief charge breaks and bathroom visits, didn’t notice any ear fatigue or discomfort. They really killed outside sound amazingly well. I haven’t used ANC before, so I don’t have experience with other models. But in comparison to AirPods - of which I’ve had gen 1 and 2 - it’s night and day. I had to have those full blast all the time on the plane just to hear decently over the general din, these didn’t require more than 50% for music and didn’t necessitate full-bore for movies either. For the ANC, it’s hard to describe for me, but it sort of cuts the sound out and also flattens it somehow so you can sort of hear it but it has no depth or loudness - don’t know how to put it! I also used them for vacuuming yesterday and it was crazy how much they helped limit the noise from the vac - I’m sure there are others that do it better, but these are definitely game-changing to me in the package they are in, and I’d absolutely recommend to anybody.
