Sorry to keep you all in suspense!:) I was out of town -- with my new phone.

So.. based on your all your helpful tips, including the last minute tip about the sale at Best Buy, that is where I went on Wednesday when my 48 hours were up. I commenced purchasing an iphone 8 with 64 GB storage for $649 on installment plan. A few minutes into the processs, the salesman happened to mention that I could get the 256 GB version for just 50 dollars more, $699. So that is what I did. I bought a cheap case in the store, and a screen protector based on another last minute suggestion from you folks (I haven't used one in years) and now have a black iphone 8 (I'm too old for the red) with 256 GB, plus case and screen protector.

And it weighs a ton!!

Wireless charging doesn’t cost $150? I happened to have bought a Samsung fast charger when I had a note 8 and use that for my iPhone X . Costed me $80 but they also sell one for $40 . Others sell cheaper as well

Is that the stand one with leather back? Just looking at one now any good?

Yes that’s the one . Considering the limitations the iPhone has with a max input of 7.5 watts it’s fine. I think it’s 9 Watts ?

Sweet, can get a new one for $71Aud, retail is $119 here, have 2 belkin 15w for bedroom but want a stand for office. Had a cheap one die so want a brand name one.

What’s the point of 15w ? Isn’t the max around 10? For wireless charging and iPhone max is 7 Or so?

Good choice. I bet your case weighs about as much as the phone itself. Don't worry about the weight, you have a good phone that'll last you years. Enjoy!

I'm coming from iphone 6, and need to get a new phone asap. Any opinions on whether to get a 7 or 8 and why? (Not interested in plusses or X). I've heard 8 is heavier and the glass is more prone to breaking, and the wireless charging isn't necessary and you'll need to pay for it too. On the other hand, if the 8 is faster and better in meaningiful ways, I can do that too. And I guess the latest phone is often the smartest choice?

Are there any significant differences in features or performance? I believe both offer "hey siri" without being connected to power, which my iphone 6 doesn't have and which sounds nice. Anything else? I'd like something that holds me for three years or so.
If you're worried about the iPhone 8 glass go for the iPhone 7. The 8 is a 7S anyway. Apple should have stuck an S onto the 7 anyway

Yes, the case is heavier than the case I had on my 6, plus I have a screen protector now whereas I didn't on the 6, so that combined with the heavier weight of the phone itself compared to the 6 makes it all very heavy. I suppose in time, and with some more biceps curls at the gym, I will get used to it.

As for the phone itself, I turned off true-tone after a couple days since it was annoying me. The phone is also slower than I'd hoped. While it's faster than my 6, it's not that much faster. Google takes like 3 seconds to come up, for example, which is a bit slower than my friend's ancient cheap android.

Mostly the phone is fine. I like "wake to raise", and being able to activate siri with out being connected to power. Though interesting that siri won't work if the phone is placed face down.

I may get a cheap wireless charger for overnights on my nightstand, and see how that goes.
