iOS, hardware, and Apple decisions don’t take full advantage of M1’s capabilities. The M1 isn’t crippled per se, but the whole Air 5 is from that perspective.
Given that the M1 is making it’s way to the “mainstream” iPads, I bet iPadOS 16 will have a bunch of M1-only or M1-enhanced features.

No doubt you are right about iOS 16, but the question for many is whether any of those new features will make any difference to them!

And, new iOSs often have staggeringly negative effects, too, such as iOS 15's hit on the battery life of older devices. My iPad Air 2, for example, lost 2 hours of battery life as a result of the upgrade! And, that's with all those battery draining items turned off — background refresh off, Location Services off, etc. I would have left it at 14.8 or upgraded to 14.8.1 had Apple offered that via iTunes synching.

Maybe 15.4.1 will help.

But there are NO iOS 15 specific features *for me* and *my use* that matter. Indeed, the ridiculous changing of the Home Screen was a step back. As is that dumb so,it screen icon that gets in the way of tapping the URL bar.

As much as I’d like to get a new toy, I’m probably more likely to replace the battery!

Seems like a waste of $100. Personally, I’d rather spend extra for the iPad 9th gen or refurb 8th gen than pay $100 for official battery replacement for the Air 2.

Agreeing with @rui no onna that spending $100 to replace the battery on an iPad Air 2 when you can replace it with an iPad 8 or 9 is a horrible idea. The Air 2 isn’t going to get iPadOS 16 and it’s 7 years old at this point. You got your money’s worth out of the Air 2. Keep it as is on iPadOS 15 or get a new iPad. You’ll be happier in the long run.

Not sure about that. I mean, what are we really talking about here? The Air 5 is already smoking fast, and things like multitasking and games and frame rates are off the charts. The more horsepower the processor and RAM chew up the worse the battery life, right? So with such a thin design and such a tiny battery, feels like Apple will always hold back what M1 is fully capable of.

Me, I don't game and I don't multitask, I'm not using my Air as a notebook replacement. I wouldn't want Apple to let M1 loose for hardcore users and watch it cut my battery back by 30%. I mean, that's what the Pro is for, right? Pro users should expect max performance at the expense of battery life. Air should be for the casual media consumption customer who just wants a sexier form factor than the standard iPad.

I checked my Air 2 battery and it is fine. Replacing it wouldn't help me to get better battery life. iOS15 is so taxing on the battery. Agree fully with Saturn 007, I have also turned off all the normal battery drainers and still it drops like a rock. I wish I could go back to 14 then I would have decent battery life but still not great. Erasing and reinstalling as new helped marginally only. However I just got the 9th generation, agree with others doesn't make sense to spend $100 on a new battery especially since my report tells me mine is in good shape. Will trade it while I still get some $$$ for it. just my 2 cents. You can still trade in the Air 2 for $100 or so making the cost acceptable for the 9th gen. Btw it is even hard to find it in stores due to supply chain.

Thanks for the confirmation about the iOS 15 battery hit, nph! We have two iPad Air 2s in the household and after my debacle, we upgraded the other one — for a while — to iOS 14.8 instead of 15. But we decided the security update was worth it and we finally went to iOS 15 on it, too. Given that it's used fewer hours a day, the battery hit isn't as big a deal.

Appreciate the frank judgments from you and the others that a battery replacement for the IPA 2 is a bad idea! You've persuaded me!

Heard bad tales about trade-ins with Apple, however. Perhaps could score a private buyer in the $120-130 range. The eBay median price is somewhere around there for one in good condition (mine is excellent).

What really appeals to me about the iPad 9 is the reported incredible battery life — a couple of test sites found it lasting 12-13.5 hours! If that's even close to being true, I’m sold!

Thanks for the feedback!
