iPhone Need to take my jailbroken 6.1 iPhone 5 to the genius bar...

I'm having the issue with the intermittently unresponsive lock button, so I need to take my phone in to the genius bar...I imagine if I take a jailbroken phone in, the first thing they'll do is update it to 6.1.4 to see if it's a software issue. Is there any way I can update it to 6.1.2 myself and take it in, with the hopes that they won't update it to 6.1.4, so if they don't replace the phone I can still jailbreak it when I get home?

Any chance they'd give me a replacement with something older than 6.1.4 on it?

The only chance you would have to restore to 6.1.2 would be SHSH blobs, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't work with A5+ devices.

When I took mine into the store, they didn't update it, so you can just hope they don't.
 
Just tell them you don't want to update it because you don't have a backup and don't want to lose all of your stuff. If they try to push iCloud backups on you, tell them you don't want to wait or that your backup is too big for the storage plan you have. They shouldn't MAKE you update the iOS; the faulty lock button is becoming an extremely common issue so the chances that it's a software issue are pretty slim, and the genius should know that.

As far as getting a phone with the latest iOS, I'd say the chances are pretty high; the latest iOS has been out for a while now.

You can't re-install 6.1.2. You can't upgrade to 6.1.4 and then downgrade later. It's very unlikely you'll get a replacement device on 6.1.2.

One option you can do though, is run ILEX RAT or semi-restore which will wipe everything from the device except for Cydia and keep the jailbreak. You can then hide the Cydia icon and hope for the best. If they want to upgrade the device just tell them no. Maybe they can fix it without upgrading. Some apple stores are performing repairs as opposed to dishing out replacement phones.

I lost my jailbreak this way.. They literally tried the button a couple of times and cracked open a replacement phone within a couple of minutes.
Small chance they will repair as said but I reckon they would restore to the latest ios as part of the repair process :(

They don't restore in store.
Apple started doing repairs in store, especially the power button, saving them money not to replace.
 
Personally i'd want a new handset not a repaired one ,and then wait for the next jail-break to come along.

Just me.

If you want to preserve your jailbreak I'd suggest you to send it in to 3rd party repair services, unless a logic board replacement is needed, they won't mess with your jailbreak.

Use activator gesture to lock the device, home button to wake up. Also can use gesture to power down, reboot, safe mode, etc.

True, there are ways around it but it would be troublesome if you actually need to use the physical button (DFU mode), hard reset (when the device is frozen)

Hell no, not me.
My phone is in great shape and JB with everything I need.
I just took it in and had the blown speaker replaced. I removed almost all JB hacks and poofed cydia and a few other things so it looked stock.
They didn't try to update it. Just went to settings, took the serial number and replaced the speaker.
Good thing they do repairs on the spot.
I don't have to chance losing my JB, backing up and syncing all my stuff back or getting a refurb with other issues.

Oh man that's the worst! It happened to me last year with my 4S. I had to get it replaced last year right when 5.1.1 came out and the new devices were being shipped with that iOS. The 5.1.1 jailbreak didn't come out for about 2 months after I got the replacement phone.

Count me as another satisfied customer knowing that Apple now does repairs on the spot at the stores as opposed to replacing the device.

I just did a quick google search and found this. It doesn't list a specific store but its an article covering the news earlier this year when Apple announced they were expanding their in-store repairs (including sleep/wake button).

Many do provide in home repairs.
Not every Apple store but you can call up and ask your local Apple store if they do.
My cousin went in last week for the power button issue and for some reason they didn't fix the button but gave her a replacement.
Not sure why though. They repair everything else but that or maybe it had more damage that they couldn't take care on the spot?

I know for a fact that the 4th busiest Apple store in the country doesn't repair Sleep Wake buttons. An entire device replacement is necessary. That link is not anything official, and mostly bogus details.

I'm not surprised because there is no repair for sleep wake buttons, the entire phone must be replaced.

Great info, thanks TJ.
But by June they mean 2013? Cause I was there last week and still couldn't fix the power button.

I just saw recently that AppleInsider reported the new repairs wouldn't be widespread until later this year. Ill try to find the link. They'll prolly aim to have this all in place before the new hardware comes out in a couple months.
