Is Netflix sending a 1080p stream or is it sending something less and letting the PS3 upscale?

I use my xbox360 to stream from Netflix now and it outputs 1080p, but I doubt that is what Netflix is sending. A side note is that the xbox also does a good job at upscaling DVDs. If only the fans were not so loud...

Your suspicion is correct. The PS3 sends 720p-quality only. There is no 1080p content available from Netflix.

I'm pleased to be wrong about HD streaming from Netflix.

However, just to be clear, while the PS3 can acccept a 1080p signal, currently Netflix has no 1080p signal to send to it.

Soo, long story short, unless your tv has a phenomenal upscaling processor (as mine does - Pioneer Pro111FD), a HD Netflix via Appletv should look just as detailed as that of the the PS3.

As capable as the Cell processor is, it cannot make 720p look like 1080p.

I think you're only partially wrong. My brother (3 time zones away) has an aTV and I had him run some tests, but I'd appreciate it if some of you other aTV owners could confirm his results. When you look at the HD genre on a computer, you can choose whether to list all HD streamable content (some 50+ pages long) or just the content that's available for PC/Mac (30+ pages long). When I had my brother try it on his aTV, it seemed he only got the content that was available for PC/Mac. Could anyone else confirm this?

If you look at the HD Genre on a computer there's a checkbox to display previously viewed or previously rated movies. It's unchecked by default. See if there's something similar on the PS3 or aTV display. If not, try checking it on a computer and see if it sticks for the PS3/aTV. I don't have either so I can't try it out.

thx for the reply :)
I never saw that check box before you told me about it, I went onto the web site on my computer, and checked marked the show rated/seen titles check box.

Titles in the selected genre returned ... but when i go check an other genre and come back .. the check box is unchecked again ... looks like it doesnt stay checked ... :(

I havent found any place on :apple:TV or PS3 for this option ...

I was hoping that as you suggested .. going on the computer and checking the boxes would fix this ... but they all uncheck as soon as i change the genre type to look for an other movie ...

If both AppleTV and PS3 dont have the option the show rated/seen movies ... this is a HUGE lack of option ... as the library of movies on netflix seem to shrink the more you watched movies ... it is a simple filter to turn on or off ... I dont feel like doing a search everytime i want to watch one of early movies i had watched ising netflix ....

Any thing that i am missing ?

My guess is that they didn't think to include it, but you can check the settings to see if there's anything there. Hopefully if it's not, they'll include it in a future update.

Yes hopefully, because its not an option I see a lot of people asking for .... :(
Sadly its one of the options I am looking for the most ...

I'm seriously considering getting an Appletv for christmas this year, just for Netflix streaming in HD ((now that I learned it can do so).

Bravo! As far as I'm concerned, apps can come later.

No. Currently, none of them do. 720p only.

WRONG!

There is even more good news for PS3 owners: starting on Monday you’ll be able to instantly watch some movies and TV shows in 1080p high definition, listen to Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound, and view an increasing portion of our content library with subtitles. This will bring the home theater experience right to your living room and make instantly watching movies even more enjoyable. Here’s a news release from Netflix and Dolby with details.

Yeah, but they were wrong -- Netflix has apparently started streaming some content in native 1080p. There may not be much of it yet, but it's there, and presumably there'll be more of it.

Where? As far as I know, Netflix doesn't offer any content in 1080p and especially not any content in 12-15 mbps that 1080p requires to look good. If Netflix is sending 1080p to the PS3 around the same bitrates that it sends the 720p content, it's going to look worse than their current 720p.

Please show me one title where Netflix is streaming even at least 8 mbps. That's the bitrate required for 1080p to just look comparable to 720p at 4-5 mbps. You need at least twice the bitrate to not get reduced quality compared to 720p and obviously more than twice the bitrate for it to make any sense doing it.

if you hit select, you get a small info pane indicating the streaming level and audio. x-high/hd is supposed to be the 1080 streams. There's no way to see the bitrate anymore, as far as I can see, since hitting triangle doesn't bring up the usual ps3 video info pane in the app. The x-high stuff does look a bit better than the old streams, but the only one I've watched so far was The Office. Not really reference material.

I have found no official comment that the X-High/HD is the tag for 1080p content. I did see a review where the reviewer stated this but I have to say this is not the case. 1080p will require a higher bitrate to match and even more to exceed 720p, thus more bandwidth. If these X-High/HD tagged streams were 1080p, you would see it in the buffer speed of that source. Buffering would take longer. Now while my theory on this is not concrete I can certainly see a difference in buffer speed of 720 and 1080p content from other sources. I do not see an increase in buffer time for these X-High/HD tagged sources based on having watched the same titles prior to the "1080p" announcement.

Im not discounting it completely though. These streams may be 1080p but if they are Netflix has figured out a way to match 720p without increasing bitrate.

One has to wonder though. If these are 1080p there has not been much uproar about it in terms of available titles or quality. In fact if you search for example "has anyone found a 1080p title for ps3 netflix" or similar.. you will find that nobody can name one title.

If Netflix is streaming 1080p, and if those titles are an improvement over 720p, I would think Netflix would be very vocal about those particular titles, but on the contrary they are very vague about the subject at best.

On the other hand, if there really are only a handful of titles then Netflix might have a reason NOT to list them -- because then it becomes obvious how few there really are. They have been vocal about 1080p being available on "selected" titles, and I think that's about as vocal as they're going to get until the range improves substantially.

Maybe there have been some glitches and they're not streaming any 1080p yet -- but they have announced that 1080p streaming (not upscaling) is available and there's no reason to think it's not at least coming soon.

Um, this is the same announcement as before. You can tell because they've crossed out 1080i to be 1080p in the blurb.

Nothing new here.

The new PS3 update gave me a reason to actually use my PS3. Prior to the update I used my 360 to watch Netflix, but the fan was so damn loud it drove me crazy. I am sure there will be a Netflix update for the 360 in Nov and once I get a newer machine it is going to be really hard to choose which system to watch Netflix on. For now my PS3 is getting some love.

Yes I use the PS3 and ATV for Netflix because of our 360s noise issue. The new version of the Xbox is supposed to be more quiet. Does anyone know?

I have one and it is much quieter than the first one. The first one sounds like a jet engine compared to the new one.

I use the xbox360 now also and the old version is so loud. Plus you have to have a $50/year live account. When my account comes due I'll probably stop using the xbox and just get an ATV for $99.

Espn3 is coming to xbox live in November and if they play all the same games that are on their site, I think the subscription may be worth it. They don't have pro football but they play pro basketball, soccer, and college football. Also, I think the live price is supposed to go up tomorrow to 60 or 70 dollars...

Yeah, just read about it. Xbox live is going up to $60, and espn only works if your ISP already supports it. Since your ISP is still the one paying for espn I wonder if it's something that would come to the ATV?

well, got an apple tv and i think the ps3 has the edge. returnin the apple tv :( the ps3 allows me to play almost any file...dont have to convert everything..
