You want Google to know your feeds? Good for you. I don't. I refuse to have a company use my data. Ever though why it is free? They have to make money somehow. Same for FaceBook and such.

So what is the best standalone RSS app out there?

This is a lousy app. It has no offline caching of articles, it has an odd bug of when I press the back button only the top bar changes but not the web page. That bug was in earlier versions of NNW. About the only difference is support for Instapaper, Tweetie and having a nice icon.

I realize that you're not a fan of Google and I'm not that much either but it is your only free choice that you can use on the desktop and iPhone. As I see it, if you want an RSS app thatsync you will have to buy Fever which many people like. It costs about $30 and the iPhone app is free and introduces a new way of reading you RSS feeds.

newsstand is by far the best rss reader on the iPhone

Have to disagree with you there. I think Byline is better but only slightly. Newsstand does offer Instapaper and Read it Later support but those features are coming in a future update. I think Byline's minimalist UI is better and Newsstand's paper view is sort of gimmicky since I don't read my feeds widescreen.

But it's all a matter of opinion :)

There is a huge difference between letting google read your personal mails, look at your photos and scan you harddrive and then know what unimportant news feeds you read.
Caution is always good you there is a difference between beeing cautious and paranoid.
