I hope the 3GB RAM is true. It would seem logical because of the introduction of iPadOS and the multiple app windows feature. Then I would have no problem recommending most people to buy the 128GB version. You will be getting a lot of iPad for the price. Yes, still A10, but like I said the CPU is not a problem on my 6th gen iPad. And while the laminated display with anti reflection coating of the Air is nice, i think most people will be fine without it, unless you use your iPad in harsh lighting environments.

Or spend $40 more and get a refurbished 64gb iPad Pro 10.5 which IMO is a far better device.

Sure, also an option. Although there are people who are apprehensive buying a refurb. I think they're fine. Also many people have a cut off point for their budget. There's always a never-ending "spend 50 Euro more and you'll get..." And some people will want 128 GB storage. Most people will probably do fine with 64 GB.

I have the 1st gen iPad Pro 9.7. Would everyone trade/sell that to get this new iPad?

I'm a bit reluctant because mine has 256gb and LTE. These new ones max out at 128 and I probably won't shell out the $$ for LTE again.

The upgrade to that is the refurb 256 GB iPad Pro 10.5” for US$599.

Had the same model/config as you and I went for the iPad Pro 10.5 512GB LTE (which I'll like replace with Pro 11 1TB soon). I'm fine with 128GB on iPhone but on iPad, 512GB is my preferred minimum.

You lose a fair bit with this new iPad:
  • laminated display
  • antireflective coating
  • DCI-P3 color
  • TrueTone
  • camera downgrade (front and back)
  • flash
  • quad speakers
  • some GPU downgrade

It's really up to you to decide whether the slightly bigger display, 10.2/10.5 ASK support, fresh new battery and 1-yr warranty is of more value than the above features. It's Apple so the new model probably still has 2GB RAM. I'd be quite surprised (although pleasantly so) if it had 3.

There is strong evidence now that the iPad 10.2" is 3 GB.

Two things that I consider when purchasing the 10.5 Pro refurbed model: 2017 model and bright spot issue. It’s too bad the 11” Pro is a higher price jump for over $200 more.

There's still conflicting reports about the RAM. GSMArena and TME.net continue to report 2gb. Macrumors here is insisting 3gb, but without citing any source or a breakdown analysis.

Aha, that could be the clincher.
Indeed. At this point, I wouldn't recommend the 2018 iPad to most people, even at $250. The 2019 iPad at $309 is a better deal IMO.

The larger screen of the 2019 iPad plus the extra 1 GB RAM (which is a whopping 50% more), as well as the Smart Connector support, make all the difference IMO. The 2018 iPad is strictly for those on a really, really tight budget now.

Good points. Unless one likes the slightly smaller display and wants MS Office at no cost. But the RAM difference probably tips the balance. But I would say the smart connector is not sought by the average casual user who doesn't need access via keyboard.

BTW, the 128 GB model of the 2019 iPad is US$399 on Amazon.

As usual, no discounts on LTE. Sadly, those deals tend to happen near EOL (or after EOL) when retailers are clearing out old stock.

Weren't you getting a 6 GB iPad Pro? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Yes, I betcha the loss of free MS Office will come as a shock to many people. Fortunately, iWork is a decent basic substitute these days for many casual users.

As for the keyboard, I think people would be surprised at just how freeing it is. Yes, it's expensive relative to the cost to the iPad, but it's seriously great. And since it is the same one as the one for the 10.5" iPad Pro and 10.5" Air, it's available all over. Because of that, you can get it for much cheaper than what Apple sells it new. I bought mine for 1/3rd off retail, from a third party Amazon seller, brand new in Canada.

I just checked on Amazon.com for the USA and it's $89 renewed. Interestingly, when I got mine, it was a new one, but then they changed the listing to say renewed, and I think it's the same in the US. I think the reason is most of them were new, but a few of the resellers were selling open box ones too, so now Amazon is calling them all renewed. Either way though, with Amazon's return policy, $89 open box is a great option even for the US$309 (32 GB edu) - US$399 (128 GB on sale) 10.2" iPad. Having the keyboard has transformed the way I used my iPad, which is the 10.5" Pro in my case. It's much closer to a laptop replacement with the Apple Smart Keyboard.

P.S. Amazon Warehouse is selling them as "Used - Very Good" for US$77.78. These are essentially open box items. eg. "Used - Very Good | Minor cosmetic imperfection on top, front or sides of item. Item will come in original packaging."

For some reason, my nearest store still has a pickup date of around 10/10. Every other store shows pickup today. Hopefully that changes soon.
