If you are going to order another SSD for your Mac Pro, and you want the speed, I would suggest both a SSD for booting and OS X and perhaps a WD Raptor (10,000RPM)??

For $700, I could get some nice mods for my GSXR or a larger HD for my uMBP and a bunch of other accessories with money still left over. But, glad to know that SSDs are worth the money for their power and speed.

So I purchased a 128gb Patriot Torqx to run as the boot drive
for my Mac Pro. I know that the new Intels are coming but I am happy with the Patriots and wanted some instant gratification.

The machine is definetly snappier but doesn't quite have the pep as my MBP.
I have (3) 1 TB 5400 rpm drives in a striped RAID array. It seems sometimes when I start an application that lives on the SSD boot drive, the other drives begin to run as well (I can hear them spinning).

Any thoughts on what could be done to speed up my system and also make sure that the SSD runs as independent from the traditional Hdd's as possible?

Is it fast out of the box with the SSD, or did you also apply the firmware update that allows the drive bus to run at the higher speed?

I'm assuming you're talking about the 13" and 15" firmware upgrades to 3.0 Gibabit from 1.5?

The original speed, 1.5 gigabit, will be difficult to saturate with mid-range SSD's

1.5 gigabit/second = 192 megabytes/second

So even without a firmware update, these drives increase your performance considerably.

The firmware update is free and easy to do through os x software update, bringing the speed to 3.0 gigabit, or 384 megabytes. No drive in the consumer region is making an honest run at this speed cap.

hope that info sort of answers your question

Ssd 256

Just installed the 256 in MBP 15". Works great. I can't help but wonder about the flash update for better performance as listed on the Patriot site, but the software is only windows based. I can always install the flash update on a windows box but what a hassle. Has anyone tried it?
