Sory for the noob question, but what are exactly the maintenance scripts you guys are talking about? Is it an Apple app/process or is it 3party software?

So change the time of the CRON jobs. Personally I run them as part of my startup. It's not hard to do. Yes it means startup takes longer, but that little bit of power saved means a smaller leccy bill.
$1/year? Surely your time is worth more than that, even if its a few seconds a day.

All UNIX/Unix like systems run scheduled tasks, known as Cron jobs. These are used to tidy up log files, and other system maintenance tasks.

OS X is no exception.

BTW notice that the Cron jobs don't run on wake up if the system is asleep.
Apple hasn't used the cron since 10.4.6 when they moved everything to launchd. Since Leopard, its all smooth sailing. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/392984/

Sleep you Macs and then check the log files the next day. The jobs run within a few minutes of waking up.

Apple processes.

I've never let mine go to sleep. I'll sleep the display via a hot corner, and disable the HDD's from going to sleep. I asked some people and read about it when I got my first iMac, and it seemed like it wasn't doing the HDD much good being spun down and back up again when it woke back up. Some argued it was doing more damage that way than just leaving it on with a consistent power supply. It's all theory, but it seemed to make some sense. I always did this with my Windows machines as well.

Plus, it's nice to just be able to pick up where you left off, and not having to give it 30 seconds to wake up.

This is actually a personal choice, but I highly suggest that you sleep when outta the room and at night, I am a person who doesn't want to waste time on a startup everytime I want to use the computer.

However if you plan to go away for a long time like a vacation, just turn it off, no need to sleep if your not going to be home for a few days.

I always put mine to sleep when I'm not home or when I'm sleeping.
There isn't a point of keeping it on if I'm not using it. And all I have to do is literally press any button and it's right back on.
