I've been told the fix is on the way.

Well I tried that timcook email route thinking it wouldn't work, but as luck may have it, it worked. I received a call from a guy named Matthew from Apple support and he assures me that this a software/firmware issue and it is priority for Apple engineers to fix. He couldn't tell me when the fix was coming, but he said it was going to happen. I'm relieved for now, but we'll see.

Well I am about to test that situation tonight. I will switch over to wired for the weekend and do some heavy testing of my own and see if it locks up. It might have something to do with the wireless though Tech Support seems to not agree at least at present time. They are still researching the subject.

I look forward to your results. If I can do anything more to help - not too technical - like running things under different circumstances - I will. I do not work so have more time probably to carry out the boring stuff. I am going to report my machine at the store in Southampton UK tomorrow so I have my back covered.

So i just spoke to a tech supervisor who seemed to know what he was talking about. The first thing he ask was if i had the ATI 4850 video card. He said it was a software issue related to the video card. He also said he has been talking to engineers about the random freezing problem and they are working on it. According to this supervisor the new update (10.5.7) will fix the problem. He said they expect it to be released within 1 week, maybe even as early as tomorrow. Just thought i would pass this along and hope it helps.

Thanks a lot. Hope the update really fix it. 10.5.7 seems taking forever to release though.
Does Apple ever release update on Saturday since you said as early as tomorrow?

i was talking with a High Level Support Agent today and she sort of told me unofficially that 10.5.7 could be in the final stage testing and could be out very very soon like this weekend or first of next week. But as usual you know how rumors goes. That is what MacRumors is all about. :D

I posted the results of todays discussion with the Tech Support Agent on this thread.

not sure if people still care--but I've had my mac for a week now. It froze within 30min of bootup while I was trying to surf with wifi. Oddly enough, safari would not work on wifi, nor would software update. When I got firefox on the mac, I could surf through wifi, but Software Update still didn't work.

Only way I can get Software update to work is through direct connection with ethernet. Safari works now with direct connection only.

I've had wifi disabled and never had a freeze in 6 days.

Firmware Update

I just ran software update and there was a Firmware update that claims to fix the problem. I am going to put my machine through some tests and see what happens.

I hope this works!

FirmWare Update A Success!!!

At least in my eyes. It worked for me. I am super Happy about it. I always locked up in iTunes with Visualizer on Full Screen and well not anymore. I got through my entire playlist. I feel like i got a New iMac. Which I did on April 21st :D Now everything works like it should.

3 Cheers for Apple for coming out with the update so fast. :D:D:D

Problem solved

Firmware update did the trick. Nice work Apple, and quick as well. Nobody, and no company, is perfect. Apple sure tries though, and they clearly care. have you seen this month's consumer reports? Apple tops in every category, especially service.

Am I imagining things or is my iMac a little louder now after I've installed the Firmware Update?

Oh, and yes, super-happy about Apple's quick reaction. Hope the firmware update solved the freezing issue for good.

Everything's good so far...

Been running WoW at max settings for a few hours now with no issues. It crashed after 6 minutes when I tried that before the firmware update.

Wow, your post made me panic, turns out it's just my external usb storage device, woooh. :D

Pulling The Trigger!

I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised at the turn around time on this supposed FWU fix. So happy in fact I pulled the trigger and ordered my 2nd iMac in 2 months now. :D Yep I'm officially going Mac at my office - once my atiMac gets here this GT 130 unit will become my uber office computer.

On a side "FYI" note to anyone else considering the jump to 8GB of RAM. I was all set to pull the trigger on the upgrade from Apple since Crucial's 8 GB kit is priced just about the same. Good thing I looked around a bit because OWCs 8 GB RAM iMac kit is now down to $670. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/

PS - I meant to post this in the "did the firmware upgrade do the trick" thread

For people that want to upgrade, unless you really need the 8GB now, it's better to wait a few weeks. Samsung recently introduced the 4Gb chips used on these modules and prices will come down fast very soon.

Lookin Good!

Currently 1.5 hours running FW 1.4. Been running iTunes streaming tunes to Apple TV, iPhoto slideshow, installing stuff, and surfing the net (Airport Wireless setup) all at once... no freezes! This morning I could freeze my system within minutes on the iTunes Visualizer test. Will continue testing but this looks like it fixed it for me
