What if.....

What if Microsoft did nothing? No ads, no upgrades, no service packs, no Longhorn. Would it even make a difference for Apple? Will Apple keep Tiger secret from the average public?

I got a kick out of this TalkBack blurb:

another version, another disaster...
I am a devoted Windows user even though Windows has alot of problems. Everytime Microsoft has a verison of Windows that they cannot fix the problems with they go out and create a new version to save their butts. The only problem with that is when they create a new version of windows there ends up being a problem with that version almost immediatly. What will happen when they bring the new Windows out and there is a problem with it? Is the problem going to be fixable? How long will it take to fix the problem? Here we go for another rollercoaster ride with Microsoft.

How long before you take your own advice and stop running Windows?

and what happens when you minimize a window on your mac. isn't the icon it puts in the dock a small picture of your webpage/image/document your viewing? same thing. if your asking MS why do it, ask Apple the same thing.

This sounds more like it's the Word documents in Windows Explorer etc that will be like that. While I'm quite capable of recognising the layout of 2 or 3 minimised documents in the Dock unless they are very similar, trying to remember them in the Finder would be well-nigh impossible. It's fine for images and perhaps even PDFs but most letters and memos look the same.

By the time I screwed my eyes up to see, and got my brain into gear, it would have been quicker using Spotlight/Longhorn search. It just seems like eyecandy that doesn't look that impressive (unless as you rolled over each one, it magnified them so you could see more clearly - tho not as annoyingly as the Dock).

Start Something...and stop halfway through to scrub the viruses and spyware from your HD.

I am wondering if this was meant as a joke and everyone gets it and decides not to respond or if this is a freudian slip that noone caught? Look at the spelling of the last word... Should be "Today"
I saw that he wrote "toady" and decided that he did it on purpose. :p

Thanks.

We are Mac users, we're not that stupid. :p ;)

I never claimed that. I was just wondering how observant people are... I came into this thread after it had two pages, noticed it right off, and thought it was ROTFLMAO funny. I was truly surprised that noone had said anything. That is why I posted what I did...

Now if you will excuse my while I go pat out the flames ;)

I'm sure that's where Microshaft got the idea from, but in the article they're calling it "groundbreaking." Gimme a break. We've had that ever since we've saved images from Photoshop.

Yeah, it was deliberate, I think it was The Register or Salon someone clever like that who first spelt it that way ;)

It also has an icon of the program that you are working in. So that I can tell the difference between my Preview window that I minimized and the Word window, but to tell the difference between the two TextEdit windows down there I need to look at their name on top of the image. It is something that takes a second longer... but to figure out what file is what ALL THE TIME without knowing what program it opens with and only with a filename? Maybe it is a good thing my computer can't run Longhorn.

Nah, there are lots of features to choose among, and some of them are even new in SP 2.

- The new automatic update feature now lets you restart your PC almost automatically.
- Now even more balloons in the bottom right corner. Always handy for keeping you distracted from your work
- Even more control panel icons and modes for showing them. Ensures there's always the need for a windows geek in the family to fix the most mundane problems.
- Several new user services tied straight into the core of the OS. Lot's of new stuff for virus writers to play with.

You forgot:
- Windows Messenger now makes an account FOR YOU so that you have no reason to get rid of it from your Start menu, desktop, or system tray!
- Windows Media Player automatically plays files without bothering to obey what program is ACTUALLY supposed to play them!
- All passwords default to <blankpass> so that you can have a password that is easy to remember and secure-- right from the start!

I did also like the part in the article which said that their first priority was stability which was laudable. Their second was getting it out promptly  and actually putting new features in was third.

Um... where's the incentive to upgrade if there's nothing new? (and yes, I know there are some things but at priority 3, it's no wonder than WinFS etc were dumped). Particularly when you've got XP SP2 stable on your network... Personally, I'd rather wait an extra 6 months and have something really good - than have something merely OK now and wait another 3 years for the really good bit.

I was listening to NPR on the way home last night and their 'tech watch' person was speaking about Microsoft's campaign as a lead in for Longhorn.
Duh. But then she SHOCKED me by saying the part of the reason it was kicked off was because of the Adobe/Macromedia merger. And then proceeded to talk about how "Adobomedia" (Macrobe?) stated that their products would run on anything, anywhere, following up with how this pissed Microsoft off because these Adobomedia product were going to be able to run without a Microsoft OS. She THEN (heavily) alluded to Adobomedia producing an OS-like piece of software that would run their products. So M$ started their Longhorn campaign.

Never mentioned Apple once. Nor Linux. As if 15 months of whipping your faithful brainless masses into a frenzy was normal?

MS rules in the Ad campaigns. I dont think i've ever seen 1 good Apple PC commercial in the last 5 years. When the G5 '"fasters personal computer ever" bit ran, it was very forgettable.

i think they are bleeding from the ears, they've been beaten down in the media for the past 2 years with security issues, they're likely trying to generate some positive marketing.

my question is - if you're bleeding from the ears will sticking cotton in them really stop the bleeding? likely not. MS will need to innovate or die.

Microsoft BOB was the pinnacle of Microsoft's innovation. Don't be dissing them!
HaHa - Good one Lacero!

OK, here's a bit of random trivia: I seem to recall that when M$ launched Windows95, it used "Start It Up" by the Rolling Stones in all of the ads. According to folks at the time MS$ paid $12 million for the rights to use the song.

Start Something - We're not able to offer you any innovation, so you better start something yourself.

I think it's more of a case of trying to prevent users from switching over to Macs or Linux, especially with Longhorn so far away.

If users were really in a relationship with MS:

Microsoft: Please! Please, don't go! I promise it'll get better!

Users: You said that last time!

Microsoft: But, this time we mean it. We swear!

Users: But, the Mac is so hot and Linux just wants to take care of me, but you just treat me like dirt, you give me lock-in and STDs, and when I can't figure you out you just give me Q318263 errors, and you...you make me hang out with Balmer.

Microsoft: Come'on can't you stay for Longhorn. Longhorn's gonna' be great.

User: You've been saying that for four years! I'm leaving.

Microsoft: But, we have a new slogan.

User: Fine, what's the slogan.

Microsoft: Start something.

User: What?

Microsoft: Start something.

User: You're kidding right?

Sure, because Adobe is just going to whip-out an OS like it's an afterthought, right after Google does. Maybe it will run on pure Java.
And, yeah that's what freaked out Microsoft, the merger between Adobe and Macromedia, nothing but that would give Microsoft pause. Especially not Linux, and definitely not Apple.
"Tech watch" types fall off the cabbage truck all the time. :D

Also, did anyone catch these little morsels from the article: "Start something curious," "Start discovering lost cities" and "Start feeding your brain."
Discovering lost cities, feed your brain, are we all becoming zombie archaelogists? And how exactly do you start something curious?
Apparently Microsoft's advertising company is using Word's grammar check. ;)

Start something, Tiger

Camera closeup of Yamila. Slow zoom-out from closeup.

Yamila: (seductive) "Start something, Tiger..."

Cut to closeup of Gates, with Homer Simpson voice over

Bill: "Doh!"

Camera zoom in on calendar page showing April 29 circled.

Yamila: "Don't wait a year to start something. Start something now."

(Male announcer voice) "Tiger, available this month."

:p

haha... that was great.

I actually caught a "start something" commercial today and remember laughing uncontrollably when the announcer spoke his last line... something along the lines of :

"It’s your choice/the choice is yours"

Seriously though, what real choices do wintel users have?
