Pretty wimpy discounts to say the least, but I guess when your stuff is selling well you don't have to slash prices much. :(

On a related note, you'll probably be able to get a Zune HD free with any $50 fragrance purchase this holiday season. :D

Knowing your fanboyism, I'm sure you'll be quickly knocking Microsoft's Black Friday sales.

I'm just happy for you that you'll be able to get your special lady friend a little something something and snag a free Zune HD for yourself (to go along with your Zune tattoo).

And I'm very much looking forward to Microsoft's Black Friday sales. I predict more serious dancing jackassery in the Microsoft Stores. Now that they mastered the Electric Slide, I'm hoping to see the Macarena. Perhaps even a special store appearance by Lord "GIVE IT UP FOR ME!!! YEAAAARRRRGHHHHH!!!" Ballmer. I can't wait.

P.S. you spelled MShill wrong when you created your account.

Does this apply to Canadians?

I get a student discount so i don't know if it would make any difference on top of that, but I could use an airport extreme.

I got my email from apple this morning as well.....but they need to let us know exactly what is going to be on sale esp. in the form of accessories.

They are $1 more discounts then the standard EDU discount.

On the face of it, yes, the student discount is $1 less. However, if you are customizing, you may be able to save a bit more using the student discount (or the Employee Purchase Program (EPP), which, from what I can tell, has exactly the same discounts). Here's a sampling:

Processor upgrade: $180 vs. $200
Memory upgrade: $20, $60, $140 savings, depending on option
Hard Drive upgrade: $225 vs. $250
AppleCare: $119 vs. $169

[EDIT: Forgot to say that I was referencing the 27" quad core for the discounts listed.]

On the face of it, yes, the student discount is $1 less.

Given that the majority of users by stock configurations, it's somewhat important. Also, everyone had seemed to dismiss the discount as being less then the EDU and vastly less. It does vary from university to university, as some have larger discounts that Black Friday cannot touch.

I'm sure most folks go with the default configuration, but I just wanted to make sure that anyone who was considering any upgrades had some additional info to go on.

I didn't know that there were different discounts for different schools. I just figured that once you get the student discount, you got THE student discount. That's interesting...I suppose it has to do with the size of the potential customer base.

p.s. I forgot to add in my last post that I was talking about the 27" quad core. I'll update that now...

Yeah, some schools have some fairly ridiculous discounts, the majority get the standard.

The online government and educational discounts appear to be the same
(about 3-9% off retail price).

I did get over $100 off the price of Applecare for a MacBook Pro with the
g-discount though.

Was that as a state employee ? My wife gets 8% of hardware & software as a state employee. The Applecare for MBP is about $350 and if my math is correct @ 8% that is a saving of about $28. How did you get $100 off with a government discount, just curious cause I want the same deal.
Thanks !!!

Apple does things ass backwards sometimes. Why can't they just tell people what the damn prices are going to be? A lot of people that are into the black friday deals are going to be making the rounds on friday. Not researching where to go. It kind of defeats the purpose of using that shopping hype to drive more sales if you're not going to publish the deals.

Why would anyone buy from the Apple Store?

Seriously - you have to pay sales tax in almost all states. Get your Apple products from MacMall or Amazon and avoid tax. If you go with Amazon, get an Amazon Visa card and get another 3% off.

Seriously - seems that anyone who buys at the Apple Store just likes to spend an extra 5-9% on tax. Makes no sense to me.

Apple Black friday sale.... stupid.

I do not shop black Friday FYI i only buy online, no tax beast ths **** out of this stupidity. Amazon/Newegg here I come.

Amazon

Amazon has all most all the MB and MBP 6% off and add 3% discount if you have Chase amazon card, it is pretty good.

15.4" MBP $1699 - $200 = $1499 pretty good deal

but not much of deal on the iMac side and it might be related 27" iMac inventory shortage everywhere,

so much of holiday sales planning by apple!.

Yeah, some schools have some fairly ridiculous discounts, the majority get the standard.

Here at Harvard, the ridiculous discounts are for older generation Macs, the current ones are very in line with the regular education discount...

hey walmart has the 8 gig touch for a wopping 195.00 on Friday. that's worth loosing your life for.

what does the apple store give fore a trade in ipod on a new one? can do trade in two?

Depends on where they are, I guess. But Apple is holding (similar?) sales on its online store in Canada and elsewhere outside the US. Certainly the Swiss store is announcing an otherwise undisclosed sale. (what I mean is that they've announced the Friday sale, just not disclosed what saving are to be had on what items)

As for those complaining that the savings are small: they're better than nothing and no one's forcing you to buy Apple products from Apple. If you can get a better saving shopping elsewhere or buying a TV instead of that MBP you hanker after, just do it.

Because, paying sales tax keeps it so that i don't have to pay income tax in my state, and helps to keep my OTHER taxes lower. It also provides jobs to the people in my state. Not really seeing the bad here.

Besides, legally, i'm 99.9% sure you are required to pay those sales taxes anyway. Check with the tax board in your state.

However, my info shows that it comes with a $50 iTunes Gift Card. Other stores are offering $30 store gift cards, i'd rather have the iTunes one. (i'm not shopping for an 8 - i have one of those and want/need bigger :D)

Trade in is 10% - you'd have to call the store and ask about 2 of them.

You can see the info here: http://www.apple.com/recycling/ipod-cell-phone/

MacMall charges sales tax. Look in the 'Help' section under 'Payment and Pricing'.

Out of curiosity, do you know which universities get bigger discounts than the standard?

I know that UCLA does for certain items (for example, the 13" MBPs are discounted a further $50).
