The reason I ask, is I want to get one but am thinking it would be wise to wait until this date before making a jump due to the incoming announcements for the new iPhone and rumoured iPad mini.

Yes it's possible, just like it's possible that a new Apple TV is released tomorrow.

The reason I ask is being a new Apple user for desktop I am not used to the release cycles of hardware. How often do Apple tend to upgrade, I know the iPhone and iPad are generally every 12 months or so.

Apple TV has always been a "hobby" device. It hasn't followed much of a release pattern. That said, I think the current one will be unchanged for a while personally. I think most anything they can do will be done in software at this point. The hardware can handle 1080p now, so what else is there? I have a brand new one sitting in my car right now. ;) Can't wait to get home and try ti out. I'll likely be selling my 2 ATV1's soon to fund 2 more ATV3's. :)

This. Unless Apple decides to add an App Market, there isn't much that can be done to improve the AppleTV at this point. My guess is they will release a whole new product that does a whole lot more (like the cable box or iTV has shown up on the front page of Macrumors the last couple of days). It will be awhile before Apple updates the AppleTV.

Remember, the first AppleTV debuted in January of 2007 and there wasn't a true successor (other than a hard drive bump) until September 2010 (AppleTV 2). And then we "just" saw a spec bump to the AppleTV 3 in March of this year. Using those figures we have at least a year before the AppleTV 4 comes out (if ever).

I'd bet a dollar it won't happen.

I think this is the last incarnation of this type of Apple TV that we'll see. I'm guessing an actual Apple TV set or set top box will be next. Well, maybe this isn't the last version of this style Apple TV "ever"...but I'm guessing one of those two other products (or both) come out before another hockey puck style ATV is released. My guess is that one of those devices will be released within 6-9 months...but I have no "inside" information whatsoever and am just making my own personal guess based on speculation and rumors.

imo, trying to predict apples product release "tea leaves" is stupid .... trying to predict apples appletv release "tea leaves" is a complete fools pursuit.

I have seen this since the atv gen 1. Good luck guessing. Vegas odds say ... yeah, its possible. Real world .... probably not. The future lies somewhere in between ;)

I seriously doubt that there will be a new Apple TV in September because the Apple TV was already upgraded earlier this year. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a significant software update before the end of the year though. iTunes 10 is nearly 2 years old, so you would think that iTunes 11 must be on its way in the next six months or so. That would probably bring new features [particularly around the cloud, airplay, and social media] that might also lead to a significant software update for the Apple TV. And who knows maybe Apple will choose to introduce Apps to the Apple TV then? But thats all just a guess [and probably wrong]. I would think that new hardware is pretty unlikely though.

Yeah DTS-HD and Dolby Digital HD.

Thought you could pass-through DD-MA to a compliant AVR? As for DTS, you have to license that capability, which means a more expensive streamer. That's why many media streamers choose leave it out (or develop their own work arounds which usually perform pretty poorly).

a version with support for H265 video would be likely.

lol. huh? sorry to laugh but that is probably *not* going to happen. Maybe but I would be so amazed it would confound me. especially since there is no official spec even layed out for it yet. yes, a draft, but no final. h.264 was only adopted a few years after the final spec was released.

Sorry but no way this will probably happen imo.

There is a huge element in this topic that makes it impossible to predict release cycles: Apple has never sold an HDTV before. And it's by no means certain that they will this year.

Get an atv2 and jailbreak it. You wont ever need another video streamer. Any atv without jb is a waste. But the atv3 cant be jb. So the atv2 is a must.

I don't agree that it's a waste, as long as your expectations of it match reality.

If there's a service you need that it doesn't provide it, don't buy it.

No stress needed.

Airplay Mirroring from Mac will fix that for the most part, though it's obviously easier having the media directly on the Apple TV.

Personally, I'd love a new hardware platform with SD card reader, bluray drive, Nas support and sat input ... but as an original Atv1 owner I've learnt to realise that apple just simply wants to control what I buy not to improve my media experience.

I expect a new deal to sell live tv channels at a price thru a software update.

But like many, I'll wait three weeks before buying (yet again) another appletv !
