i'm thinking of getting an apple tv this week, do you think it's a wise decision. the whole schedule is messed up, the keynote could be in a week or a month so i don't know what to do, anyone think a new one will be released soon?

No idea of course, but I just picked a new one up last night, to replace an aging 160GB model that is now residing in the bedroom. I LOVE the new unit for the increase in speed alone, and figure, what the heck. If another new model would be introduced by say the holidays, I'll just pick one up anyway, and have one in every room by the time I'm done. :D

Honestly though, for $99 it's a really great little package, that I think can still be improved by software updates alone!

They may rev the hardware during he next updates which are scheduled to hit early next month. Maybe enough to give it 1080p support? No one knows. But I'm waiting until after that announcement just to see, it's less then a month away.

I was wondering this as well.

I have begun to load all my DVD's into iTunes and was thinking about getting two more Apple TV's so that every TV has one, but was wondering if there would be an update soon. Considering the time between the last updates I say we won't see a new Apple TV device till maybe fall of next year, but I am wondering what others think?

There have been rumors suggesting that the ATV hardware won't be updated this year, or at least in quarter 3 of this year, which would include the september time frame, (but perhaps October is quarter 4).

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...per_quarter_but_no_update_planned_for_q3.html

I'm in the market for a second ATV2 for our bedroom TV. But it's not critical so I'm willing to wait a month to find out. If they don't update this Fall, I'll pick up that extra ATV2 as a refurbished item from Apple.com for $85 (+ tax) with free shipping!
http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC572

We haven't heard any announcements of a media event in September (as far as I know), though that september event has been reliably happening for the last few years, and the month is already halfway done.

If I were a betting man, I'd predict the following: Apple will hold a media event for the iPhone 5 either late this month or in October. They'll spend a few minutes talking about how the latest version of the Apple TV firmware will allow airplay mirroring from iPad2's and iPhone 5's. They'll announce no change to the ATV2 hardware.

The only realistic hardware change I would think people would be interested in for the ATV would be support for 1080p playback. I don't think Apple is in a hurry to add that functionality, though, since they don't have 1080p content available on the iTunes Store. Yes, there is YouTube and Vimeo content that's 1080p. And I would love support for 1080p, since I have young children and a 1080p camcorder actively collecting HD home movies I store on my computer. (there are also people ripping blu-rays, but Apple probably won't publicily support that practice, and they've shown no interest in blu-ray anyway).

But if Apple enables 1080p streaming on the ATV2, it will beg the question about what 1080p content APPLE offers, so I'd expect them to have that question answered before they update ATV2. IE: when itunes movies become available in 1080p.

Just my opinion. I'd expect that ATV2 gets hardware-updated next spring. But I'd love to be wrong and have them update this Fall.

ATV2 only requires a firmware update to stream 1080p since since jailbroken ones already can. So that capability already exists with the ATV2, just not unlocked with the current software. So perhaps it will be sooner than later.

Theres no way there going to have an iphone 5 with A5 chip and not upgrade the apple tv to A5 too

The question is what to do with the current apple tv2

Maybe lower the price to $70 or $60
Some people who dont care about 1080p like most on here would buy it

I need a faster processor like the a5 chip to run HD movies from icefilms without skipping

And actually it downgrades the 1080p to 720p so it doesnt actually play your 1080p movies in full using xbmc/jailbroken

I bought one, and love it! Just do it.

What's the point? It's not like it needs to be any faster (the current hardware is superb and just needs software updates - nothing else). Could you imagine it having a quad-core A6?

I feel like they've finally worked the kinks out of atv2 with their updates. Really enjoying mine. Have a hunch they're not going to announce an atv3 this fall. There's so much going on, but I'm no pro:eek:

I agree. I think this fall announcement is going to focus on iPhone 5 and iOS5. This summer was Lion amd MBP. All about marketing and not diluting the main product announcement with other lower level products.

To be honest, I would have thought the iPhone 5 would have been announced by now (maybe not shipping). Its pending release is throwing the keynote schedule off. Apple can't really announce anything else (in the iOS/iPod realm) until the iPhone 5 is released.

I do believe the Apple TV will get updated at some point to maintain the same hardware as the iPhone 5/iPad 2. However, I don't think it will be at the iPhone 5 event and I have no idea if they'll bother this year.

In addition to the iPhone 5, iCloud and iTunes Match, you know Apple has to be prepping a new version of iTunes with Ping 2.0, an updated iPod touch and a new line of iPods.

So, who knows when they'll get around to the Apple TV.

I'd be happy to just get a menu revamp so All my TV Seasons can be in one menu and not multiples.
That was done for a little while in netflix on fox's show 24, but now it has been changed back. I think it was only an Apple TV thing because at the same time they were in one menu on my apple tv my sony blu ray streaming had them in separate.

It has been a year since the ATV 2 came out, I was hoping for an app store to be rolled out. We are no closer to one now then we were a year ago, very disappointed in Apple about this. I love our ATV for playing Netflix and all of my local content, however I am going to pick up a Roku2 soon, just for Hulu+, GBTV and a few other apps.

Had thought about a Boxee but after looking at the Roku2 it and our ATV fulfills all of my needs.

Hey all! I ended up purchasing one yesterday. Could not be happier, and I didn't get buyers remorse! Makes everything so much simpler... Thanks for everybody's help!:apple:

Congratulations, the AppleTv does what it is designed to do so well it is hard to believe it is only $100

I am going to add another device to expand the content choices we have but with the amount of content we have in our iTunes collection and the great Netflix capability the ATV2 will remain our goto box.

FYI: I jailbroke my ATV2 using SeasonPass, then installed XBMC and the BlueCop Repository and now I have Hulu (and Hulu Plus but I'm not a subscriber) on my Apple TV.. . WITHOUT COMMERCIALS. It streams beautifully, and it's free.

If you want a Roku2, go for it, but if all you need is Hulu/Hulu plus, you can have it on your ATV2 right now for free.

For those looking for a hardware upgrade, I sure wish we were seeing a few rumors for something related to :apple:TV. Sure, we've seen a few notes about software stuff in iOS5, but seen/heard next to nothing about new hardware. In the past, this thing has not been as closely held as new iPhone tech yet we have seen a fair amount of rumors about iPhone 4S and 5 this go around.

As such, I'm feeling a bit pessimistic on refreshed hardware this year... though I sure wish that a full 1080p-capable version (not one that still downconverts it to 720p when it pushes it to the HDTV) would roll out with the other new toys. Personally, I don't need any 1080p content in the iTunes store; I just want it for native home video shot for years on 1080 HD camcorders. It would be so nice to watch the footage at native quality rather than downconverted 720p.

Maybe I'll just go fully delusional and hope that the :apple:TV3 is coming out this year and that it is such a leap ahead that it has security tighter than it's iDevice brethren? Not holding my breath though. Com'on Apple... money is ready. Don't make me stick with the 2007 edition for another year!

Would be nice but you can use a Playlist folder for the show name and inside each folder a smart playlist for each season. Means 1 more menu level but it does work well.

Can I ask how please? screenshots, youtube video? etc

I want to organise stuff like this, and also film series, e.g. Start Wars

cheers

For each TV show create a Playlist folder in iTunes, then inside eas folder create a smart playlist for each season. Then enable playlist for all on your ATV and Bob's your Uncle you are done.

I tried a couple of times to JB my ATV, but to be honest just seems way easier to just switch between the two box's (assuming i pick up a Roku).

I think apple will eventually add an app store for the ATV, but not until the ATV3, which will be out next fall (IMHO)

*shrug* Suit yourself. But I'm not a hacker at all and I was able to get it set up quite nicely in just an hour or so of googling around. In case you (or any other readers) get interested, here's step by step instructions for jailbreaking and installing xbmc:

http://blog.firecore.com/5180

(scroll down to the comment posted by "Anonymous" on Tue Aug 30, 2011 7:51 pm. Should take you ~20 minutes to perform this install. )

Once you get xbmc installed, you need to install the bluecop repository plugin to get Hulu:
http://www.appletvhacks.net/2011/03/02/how-to-watch-hulu-on-apple-tv-2/

Once you get Hulu installed in XBMC, you can just enter your Hulu+ login info and then you can manage your subscriptions on a computer, giving you quick access to the Hulu shows you want to watch on your ATV2.

Also, if anyone is interested in Plex, you can do that on the Apple TV 2 as well:
http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php...t-for-appletv-gen2-version-082-now-available/

And here's a good overview step-by-step that takes you from regular Apple TV 2 through jailbreaking through installing plex.

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/29662-guide-new-appletv-users-on-ios-43-build-8f455/

This is all for the latest ATV2 firmware (4.3) and is an "untethered" jailbreak, meaning you don't have to plug your ATV2 in every time you reboot it, just like you'd regularly use it.
