It appears Apple has been listening because a few things were fixed in this update that haven't been officially reported:

#########################
1. Netflix now shows whether a movie is available in HD with an HD icon. (update: this feature was apparently added a day before the update)

2. Watched/Unwatched now works correctly automatically.

3. Manually marking a video as watched from the "Unwatched" category is no longer buggy.

4. Playcounts and Last Played Dates are now updated correctly for both music and videos.

5. 720p subtitles now work correctly.

6. Videos in iPhoto now show up on the Apple TV.

7. Items in Playlists now show up in the correct order you put them in instead of alphabetical order.

8. People who had certain TVs that required them to use an HDMI to DVI converter or older HDTVs that don't support 720p were having problems with the picture being wavy or wobbly. That has now apparently been fixed according to a thread on Apple's forum.

9. Large Photo Libraries used to repeat only a small subset of the library when used with the screen saver function. Now this works much better and random photos are shown from the library or folder. (You will need to reselect what photos to use in settings to see the fix immediately)

10. TV shows are now sorted correctly in order by Season and then on the next level by Episode.

11. Video playlists now continue to the next one when played instead of returning you back to the main menu.

12. Song and artist information are now updated from Internet Radio streams.

13. The About screen now shows the wifi channel, BSSID, and the output resolution to the TV. (The new Apple TV now allows for 480p output as well with the update for SDTVs and HDTVs that cannot handle 720p.)

14. The frame skipping issue with HD content seems to have been completely resolved for most people who were experiencing the problem.

Has anyone else found anything that hasn't been reported? And why can't Apple just provide more detailed release notes like they urge their own developers to do?
################################

Unresolved bugs/issues:

1. Some people have had consistent frame skipping issues and many who did have the problem reported that the update completely fixed it for them but a few others say it still happens for them but less often.

2. Some people are reporting HDMI handshake issues with certain TVs where the screen turns pink and requires switching the TV to a different input and back to resolve. (Since it only happens on certain TVs it is possible that this cannot be fixed on Apple's end)

3. TV Show Seasons still don't appear to be nested the old way but this could be a design decision and not a bug since Itunes and all iOS devices work the same way.

#################################
Missing Features to be added that were on the old Apple TV:
1. iTunes LP support
2. iTunes Extras support
3. Egg cooker lol!
################################

All in all a very good update I would say. Hopefully they can concentrate on the few remaining issues now and get Airplay working in more situations like for iPhone videos in the camera roll. I'm really liking the implementation of Airplay where it does work. If you have an iOS device, the new Apple TV now basically has a mobile hard drive with a built in touchscreen remote and the ability to switch between your big screen TV(s) and your mobile screen at will. If you don't like to have your computer on and iTunes running to access your iTunes content, you don't really have to anymore.

I wouldn't consider this a bug fix but a change. Unchecked items in iTunes now show up on the Apple TV and they are dimmed grey but you can still play them.

Just found a couple more things:

1. Playlists now show up in the correct order you put them in instead of alphabetical order.

2. People who had certain TVs that required them to use an HDMI to DVI converter or older HDTVs that don't support 720p were having problems with the picture being wavy or wobbly. That has now apparently been fixed according to a thread on Apple's forum.

Also I noticed that if your video includes 5.1 audio, Airplay does push 5.1 to your home theater. I was afraid it would only do the stereo that the iOS device supports but glad to see it does do surround sound.

here is a new bug! or it is old for some people. but i never had this problem before the update!

The picture is green/ping/blue when i start the apple tv but if i switch hdmi channels it turns back to right colors. stuped bug! FIX IT

Hanging in the movie menu when browsing by genre ... Not fixed.
Crappy grouping of tv shows by season ... Not fixed.
Random disconnects and failure to connect to iTunes ... Still need to check.
720p subtitles ... Haven't checked it yet, would be nice if fixed.

Do photo screen savers now use ALL photos in the selected folder/album? I still have 1 week to return my refurb 160 gb in favor of a new version. Playcounts fixed goes a long way with me.

The photo screen saver issue seems to be fixed for me. Go back in and re-select your photos or large album and give it a try. I have all my photos selected (14k) and I am getting a nice random presentation just like tv1.

I tried this right after the update and I had the same issue of repeating photos, but I noticed that when I selected my album on the atv it displayed a progress indicator next to "photos". If I waited for the indicator to complete the screen saver no longer would show repeats. 20 minutes now and no issues :)

Photo screensaver bug seems fixed on mine too. I have a folder with about 500 images in it that the ATV would only play about 1/3 of before the update. Now they all seem to be cycling through correctly.

No, still not fixed.

It is fixed. I have two ATV2s and initially I saw that the photo albums looked like they were repeating the same small subset from my earliest photos.

Later I noticed one of the ATV2s was showing photos from throught my catalogue.

The thing I did different was t reloead the photo library by going into the photos menu. That was all I did. So it is for sure fixed. Just have to select the library once and it corrects. Must clear the cache on the 8GB flash.

:)

Problem with sony Bravia still exists.

The problem with he screen going green / pink after around 20 mins playback has not been fixed. (have to sleep the ATV then wake it again to return to normal colours)

Also updated the firmware on the bravia, even though my ATV1 never had any issues, that doesn't work either.

This is a MAJOR bug apple, even if only affects Bravia and some Phillips TVs.

The discussions on apple forums are increasing in size quickly....

It appears that TV shows are now sorted correctly. While still not grouped together, the Seasons and episodes used to also be sorted out of order. Now they are sorted correctly in order by Season and then on the next level by Episode. I'll update the first post.

I'm looking forward to these updates. I updated the ATV2 yesterday but didn't have a chance to do anything more than just play with a quick airplay session. The HD stream from the iPhone worked brilliantly. The TV episodes being sorted correctly is great although I hope they'll give us better grouping sometime.

...

4. Playcounts are now updated correctly.

...

For those who have updated: Does the above bug fix include music playcounts? I've avoided using my :apple:tv for playing music from my Library because it didn't update playcounts for music items.

If the update indeed fixes music playcounts, then bar the doors, Nellie-- I'm finna make a bona fide pwaahty cloughb up in this beeyotch. :D

I had a 720p @60 fps vid which was unwatchable due to exessive skipped frames , lag and audio sync issues. After the update, audio is no longer out of sync, no lag and hardly any skipped frames (maybe once every 2 mins., but barely noticeable)

Apple IDs containing spaces: fixed?

One issue has me hesitating to buy the ATV2 - people have reported that they cannot enter a space character when activating Home Sharing, even though spaces are legal (and not that rare) within Apple IDs.

Can anyone confirm/deny that spaces can now be entered as part of the Home Sharing Apple ID data entry screen?

Not all metadata appears to be shown consistently (have seen a few threads related to this).

In my case, the one that really annoys me is that the "long description" for TV shows (and presumably also movies) doesn't show up - I've manually updated a few to copy the text over into the "short description" field (which does show up), but unfortunately it has a fairly short character limit (the benefit of using the long description is that it gets gracefully truncated on the Apple TV when it's too long - short descriptions get hard-truncated on the way in, which isn't ideal).

Add it to your list!

I haven't checked if this has been fixed in the new update or not... but my biggest gripe with the new AppleTV is the following:

I have a slow internet connection. 1.5mb. The old AppleTV used to analyze my connection before determining the correct resolution of YouTube video to play. The new AppleTV does not appear to do this, automatically slecting the highest-res option every time. This means that instead of selecting an option and watching it a few seconds later... I now must wait MINUTES for the HD version to queue up before watching can begin. HUGE problem, makes YouTube almost worthless!

movie hang

After the new update i am finding one set of my ripped HD movies is just hanging at the start of the film, progress bar shows with spinning icon but no grey buffer bar or anything. Any ideas? other lower res movies still work and these files worked before the update.

cheers
Chris:)

I would like to chime in on the video stuttering with HD content (when buffer is full) issue, post 4.2.

From the material I have tested, it appears the issue has been fixed for me.

This is only a short term assessment as I have only had time to test 2 sets of source material that were giving me trouble prior to applying the 4.2 update.

Also, the subtitle issue on 720p material appears to have been fixed as well.

After a bit of web research, it may have something to do with the m4v file and dolby 5.1. If i let it hang for ages and try to go back it crashes the Atv2.

Any suggestions?

When you look at description of movie in Netflix Instant Queue and then back out, you are brought back to the beginning of the queue. Annoying when you are looking at movie 199 out of 250 in your queue.

Works fine in the other filters. YOu are always brought back out to where you were.
