Can someone explain what the difference is now when buying a new iPhone if AT&T is your carrier? i know the new changes don't take effect until next week, but still trying to understand.

my assumption is you pay for the phone outright from the start. I bought the 6+ 128g back in sept of '14 and paid $499(?), would i pay $949 now if i wanted the same phone? does that make my monthly billing cheaper then? what is the difference from doing this with att then with the new apple plan?

any explanation on both the apple and new att plans for iPhones is appreciated.

Basically att motive is to force people off grandfather tiered voice lines (700/1400) minute family talk plans which were $69.99 or $89.99 plus $9.99 per line plus texting (optional) plus data (per line). The key is the $9.99 add a line. U can get a $450 subsidy on the $9.99 line (lines 2-5).

The carriers in the mid 2000s were trying to brag how many subscribers they got. So all those add a line $9.99 sounded good to investors when they weren't subsidizing $600 smartphones by $400 per line.

That's the real reason for forcing people off the grandfathers tiered voice plans.

Any other excuses u hear are just lies.

The mobile share plans att is forcing u on have been tweaked several times. They are a fair value for new customers these days. But they don't offer the flexibility of the grandfathers tiered voice plans where I can get a $450 susubidy on an iPhone and put a flip phone back on that line and not be required to pay for data.

You pay for the devices ON TOP of the cost of your service.

And I have seen that AT&T is allowing you to cancel your contract without ETF... so not sure how that helps/affects your situation.

I haven't seen that but it is welcomed under the new circumstances.

Be aware if you are a DirecTV customer you have a couple of perks to take advantage of.....$300 off if you sign up for Next and $200 off if you trade in a phone worth $10 or more resale.
That's excellent.

So basically they just don't want people gaming the system. Understandable.

I really don't see what the problem is. If you want a lower price, you have plenty of options: Tmobile, Cricket, etc. If you want the coverage and backing of Verizon or AT&T you can either pay for it, or not.
