A slip up on Canon's China website brings us a new 10.1MP body with sensor-cleaning. 50mm f/1.2L and 70-200mm f/4L IS too!

Holy crap, that thing is nice. It's still freaking tiny though, and I wonder what the price will be? Now it makes me want to wait to buy, to see if they are going to add sensor cleaning to the 5D.

It's neat they added IS to the f/4 70-200, though it seems a tad unnecessary. That lens is very light and manageable, and was at a good price point for people wanting to get a really good telephoto.

That 50mm f/1.2L looks great. That might be some glass I'm interested in picking up, as long as it can focus faster than the 85 f/1.2L.

I have the 70-200 f/4 and think IS would be great if it's under $750. Using the non IS lens stopped down and hand held at 200mm (320mm on 1.6) can be tough.

Yeah, still too small for my taste, but I'm glad they got rid of that little screen that tells you the settings that sat above the LCD. Now they can make that LCD a bit bigger.

I think it will probably come in around $1100 though Canon would make a huge splash if priced under $1000.

M. Teezie -- I completely agree!! What a great lens to have, let's just hope that it's not as expensive as the 85 f/1.2L

what a great time to get into dslr. sony, nikon, canon. all around $1000, good lenses. and the competition will be fierce. i see price drops in the near future.

and in 2 years the new revisions of the entry level dslr's are due. and every company will try to iron out the weaknesses compared to their competitors. then we will get 12 MP, image stabilisation, low noise, good dynamic range, sensor cleaning and good handling in every entry level dslr for $1000.

i just love competition.

btw: can one buy sigma stocks? or tamron?

Is it just me, is it smaller? Or is it still the same size as the 350D/Rebel XT?

I'm betting that the 50mm f/1.2L will be around the same price point as the 85 f/1.2L.

It's supposed to be the same size as the current 350D/XT.

I guess I should have specified the "new" 85 f/1.2L MK II -- the revision added a huge price tag.

I was hoping for say a new 24-70mm L possibly with IS or something like that. I recently got in a 70-200mm f4L for testing. I do hope this will drop the price of the 50mm f1.4, if it drops around $200 I'd so buy one.

I'm surprised it's going to be 10 megapixel. Why would they bump the Rebel to 10 and not the 30d?
The 30D was released (update to 20D) not *that* long ago. There are still some big advantages of the 30D. But, it may go away if the 5D gets a revision and lower price. (Rumors of 3D and new 1Ds abound...)

Harumph. These model lines need some clarity. I agree the 30d has some big advantages.

I wonder how well the sensor cleaning works. Anyone tried it on one of the Olympuses or Sony?

*EDIT* Carletonmusic, I think I didn't explain myself clearly. I don't mean I think the 30d should get an update, but that the 30d should have either been 10 MP or the 400D 8 MP.

The 350D didn't have the eye sensor did it?

I'm going to feel robbed if they drop the 20/30D line for the 5D, I bought the 30D about 6 months ago. I already feel somewhat displeased with the 10MP 400D, as it was only 6 months ago they released what should be a "better camera body" and decided 8mp was the best they could do. I smell a class action suit. ;)

I agree, it would have made more sense from the MP race, but frankly I think that 8.2MP 1.6x CMOS has the perfect pixel size/density ratio. You start to get more noise past ISO400 (note reviews of the new Sony 10MP). Nikon (to some degree) has the same issue with its higher MP cameras, though not as much because they use a 1.5x crop instead of 1.6x.

In any case, I think we'll see the following line (eventually)

Digital Rebel XTi/400D
10.2 MP @ 3fps DigicII
1.6x crop
$799

35D
10.2 MP @ 5fps Digic II
1.6x crop
$1299

5D mkII
12.8 MP @ 5fps DigicIII
1.0x crop
$2499

3D (fully sealed yadda yadda)
13.3 MP @ 6fps DigicIII
1.3x crop
$4999

1Ds mkIII (combines 1D and 1Ds)
22MP 5fps; cropped 12MP @ 8.5 fps DigicIII
1.0x crop
$6999

Overall a good stab, but I'd like to see the 3D boast a FF 16MP sensor taken straight out of the current 1DsII.

Or better yet, just call it 1D Mark III (no 's').

mmhh toys!
I can't wait to see a review of 50mm f/1.4 USM Vs. 50mm f/1.2L.

Bollox, I have just bought the 70-200 f/4 used. I bet it is going to drop in value 2nd hand. Oh well, I have a feeling I am not going to be selling it anytime soon, it hasn't even arrived yet:)

The 400d looks to have a better grip than 350d. More rubbery.

Hey now, you know you would rather have the better quality image over a 10% increase in horizontal resolution any day! : )

Now those are some long awaited lenses! I would imagine that the 5D and new 50/1.2L will make an amazing combination.

I think that would make sense too, but I saw this and thought it looked pretty authentic:

===================

Introducing the revolutionary EOS 3D.
Built from the ground up to represent the new face of digital imaging the EOS 3D will represent a breakthrough in high performance yet affordable photography. Featuring an elegant yet supremely functional design it takes the best of Canon's previous designs and enhances the experience even further. A high performance AF system featuring 27pt of which 11 are x-type down to f/4 while and the centre point is cross-type to f/5.6 and allows AF down to f/11. The AI servo performance has been significantly improved too, exceeding that of the 1D Mk II.

Also Canon proudly brings ECF to the digital era and is greatly enhanced in performance over that found in the Elan 7NE.
However, the true revolution lies in the heart of the camera. Packing an amazing 13.3MP into an APS-H sized sensor the images are processed by a new DIGIC III engine. The next generation DIGIC III Image Processor builds on the legendary abilities of the digic II with double the processing power necessary to deliver unprecedented levels of resolution, speed and dynamic range. Despite the EOS 3D having smaller pixels than the EOS 5D, the DIGIC III provides even greater DR, more accurate colour rendition improved WB and lower noise. ISO 50 and 3200 are now part of the standard ISO settings and ISO 25 and 6400 are now included as an expanded option. Also it further reduces power consumption allowing class leading battery performance.

Thanks to DIGIC III the EOS 3D also boasts an impressive burst rate of 6fps for 18 shots in RAW and 40 in jpg.

In addition the body adds several sealing gaskets to the all magnesium shell allowing for operation in more extreme environments. A new evaluative algorithm allows more accurate metering in extreme lighting and can even correctly expose subjects like snow. Also a 2.4% spot meter allows for precise metering of any part of the scene. The viewfinder shows an impressive 98% of the scene both horizontally and vertically. Also for the first time Canon will be employing 2.75" OLED display screen, offering superior resolution, brightness and power consumption to LCD screens and having markedly better performance in bright daylight

I'm very jealous of the 70-200 mm f/4 IS that Canon now has. All I want from Nikon is a 70-200 f4 (I know an old lens of this type exists), and it would be even better with VR.

Wow......Canon's (likely) lineup really needs a new naming system. I don't want to see a new 3D that's better than the 5D. At least Nikon's (current) lineup makes sense. Pentax's K100D being better than their K110D doesn't make sense, nor does Olympus' E330 being better (?) than their E500. Just make the numbering progressive rather than random.

And if I was jared_kipe and dropped that much money on a camera, I'd be angry too that the lower end 400D has more megapixels. And you really can't ensure that the 400D won't have better image quality than the 30D.

I think the main difference between camera bodies is the control you get, not image quality. I'm hardly ever concerned about image quality coming from my D50. It's going to be as good as other cameras, except with less MP.

And despite wanting some more control on the camera body, I'll only get a new camera if it gets some features like sensor cleaning, built-in "VR" (to compliment the VR built into lenses), and 12 MP. I'm giving myself 2-3 years.

Perhaps, we'll have too wait for reviews. What I'm saying is that in the days leading up to the 30D's launch, we were totally expecting a 10MP body. Then uncle Canon told us that 8MP was as high they were going to go for 1.6x crop bodies. Yet just 6 months later they release a higher resolution chip in a lower end camera body. I must be in topsy turvy world.

It's sorta like what I would feel if Apple announced the Mac Mini was moving to Core2Duo, while keeping the iMac with just a CoreDuo.

You can get an 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D for around $600 if you look around. Or the AF-S version for around $1000.

It makes perfect sense. Canon has always had its top model as the 1D. The 5D is below that; then the 30D; then the 350D/400D.

A new 3D would be a more tame version of the 1D, and have features above the 5D. It's just in reverse numbering of what you are used to. It lets you know that this is our flagship camera and were not going to release a HAL 9001 next Tuesday :p
