I had a similar set up with a Netgear Wireless Router and a Time Capsule, I forced the Netgear to work as a 'modem only' and let the Time Capsule manage the network.

Wasn't easy, but everything works sweet now :)

how did you get netgear to work as modem only? do you remember what you typed in on your computer to get settings up?

thanks

ace okay, would you advise closed networks? does this mean hidden.. sorry for all the questions!

Yes, I mean hidden. I know they really don't deter anything, but it makes the transition from one router to the other more seamless without using WDS which will significantly slow down the network.

okay.. quick update:

i have everything running.. but i have the netgear transmitting a network and my time capsule transmitting two networks.. this seems to be far from optimal as the time capsule shows 1bar signal (on home pc) and the netgear has 3-4bars! they are situated next to each other

i still want two networks but can i have the timecapsule to run the 5gh ONLY and leave all other traffic to go through the net gear?

any ideas why its so slow?? - thanks again everyone!

That's exactly how I have my network set up. I have a Linksys router/modem and a 1Tb Time Capsule. I have the TC set to 5Ghz only and have my Linksys set to Wireless G mode. This way, my MBP, MB aTV and iMac all connect through the TC at higher speed for backing up via Time Machine or streaming videos from my iMac iTunes library. My other stuff like iPhone and iPod Touch connect through the Linksys at G speed.

IIRC, you need to launch Airport Utility on your Mac and then select Time Capsule on the left. You will be guided through a series of questions asking if you want to join and existing network or create a new one etc etc. Select create a new one and give it a unique name (I called mine network5G). There should also be an option there to select how you want the TC to broadcast, i.e. Mixed b/g/n or n-only. Selecting n-only will set your TC to only broadcast at 5Ghz.

Hope this helps

You should really have gotten a netbook running Vista & some monster cables for $100. Wudda made things a breeze.

brilliant il give that ago later tonight.. any ideas why my 5gh" network is running so danm slow compared to the netgear router? could there be interference from the netgear as they are situated next to each other?

thanks!

I had both my Time Capsule and my Linksys router/modem sitting next to each other too (due to a short ethernet cable linking the two) so I can't really see it being caused by close proximity. Make sure you have specified n-only in Airport Utility for Time Capsule and also ensure that your TC is broadcasting on a totally different channel from your Netgear (also set in Airport Utility).
