Why what difference does it particularly make? For me its a total non issue. It's two buttons... Not a drama.
I have no desire to buy this phone regardless, but the idea is that every other Android phone has the home button on the left including the Nexus.

One X, X+, S etc.. All had the back arrow on the left with the home button in the middle...

Does "No" cover "exceeds iPhone" or just "fails to match" ?

I think there should be three poll options. Because if it is the latter, i can't choose either of the options presented :)

???

I've only been using Android devices for less than a year but of the three I've owned, not a single one has the Home button on the left (Nexus 7, Nexus 4, Note 2 - all in the middle). And the back button is on the right on some devices, left on others. I don't see a consistency across devices so don't see why this makes a difference.

I think it's a beautiful design, now contemplating switching from my Note 2. Switching to Android and the constant release of new top end devices is not kind on my wallet. ;)

You are both correct, sorry I was a bit confused. I quit using my N4 and was thinking the home button was on the left.

I'm starting to fall in love with this device. Just wish HTC would've found a better place for the power/wake button, and would have used the HTC center logo as its home button. It bugs me that they're going against the norm and making the home button on the right. "Home" just feels more at home in the center.

----------

The off centered home button bugs me more.

Me too. It's so small a thing, but it bugs me.

I don't see why they couldn't have made the HTC logo the home button, or better yet, just NOT have the HTC logo take up space there. It's so wasted, and all for a dang logo.

I'm even more bothered by it, now. lol.

Worse than that, though, is the power/wake button location. It's as if HTC insists on making it difficult to reach. The only easy way is to use two hands. They need to realize what other manufacturers have long known: as devices get bigger, the power/wake button needs to go on the side.

----------

Matches? I think it exceeds the iPhone in appearance.

1,000% agree.

Besides the beautiful sides and bottom, the iPhone 5 is, in my opinion, ugly. The back just looks like a weird hybrid of two worlds that clash.

When I look at the HTC One, I keep thinking to myself, this is how the iPhone 5 should have looked, and what the iPhone 5 screen increase could have been. Alas, fantasies...

This is only an issue if you're constantly bouncing back and forth between different phones. I would expect you'd get use to the home button's placement in about 5 minutes of use if you're like most people and only have one phone.

This is exactly what I want from Apple right down to the changes with iOS. I got bored/tired of hTc's Sense too but I like what they did with Sense 5.

I guess we will have to wait 2-3 years before Apple thinks we are ready for a 4.7"+.

Sadly Apple has gone from being THE innovator in the smartphone field to playing catch-up. :(

Hate to make a political analogy, but they're like modern day Republicans, stuck in their own bubble, convinced they know precisely what people want and how they want it, and that anything outside of that bubble is wrong.

Aye.

Sadly, the HTC One Verge review doesn't help paint it in a good light. The Verge touched on the two things I pointed out in this thread.

1) Poorly placed power/wake button.

2) Poorly placed home button. It upsets me even more that the home button is where it is all because a damn logo.

Shame on you, HTC.

Not with that thong line connecting to the camera, the Beats logo or the HTC logo on the front. The headphone jack is also placed in an odd, ugly spot. As noted above, not a fan of the size or placement of the rear camera either.

And while I do like the micro-machined speaker grills on the front, I can see them eventually getting dead skin, dirt and dust in there. No good way to get that out if so, aside from pushing that gunk into the phone. I do like the general look of the front, mostly because it resembles the rear shell of the iPhone 5.

Why is the power button poorly placed?! Because its on the left?

And I watched that review and it smacked me as pure iOS fanboysm, I also heard the verge is basically always brown nosing apple as well.

I gonna wait for anand's review, by far the best.

Everyone leans favorably when it comes to Apple, I don't deny this, nor do I like it (I think it does Apple disservice to not be honest about them). But Josh Topolsky from the Verge was the first (or one of the first) reviewers that was honest about iPhone 5 and iOS' shortcomings. It's actually a great review.

To answer your question, it's not just because it's on the left, though that doesn't help right handed users, but primarily because it's on the top. Have you ever owned an HTC One X, or used it for a good period of time? The power/wake button on the top (right) is cumbersome to reach.

Devices are getting bigger, and the only one access to turning your phone on and off (ie. wake/sleep) should not be hard to reach. You have to, as the Verge review points out, shuffle your hand to reach the top. It's very tiresome.

I don't like the top power/wake button on the iPhone 5 either, but it is a smaller device and there is at least the easily accessible home button to wake it.

Again, I personally don't like physical home buttons, but I can't stand having to stretch and/or shuffle to reach the top button.

It makes logical sense, as devices get larger, to put the buttons on the sides (ala Samsung, Sony, Motorola, LG).

The thing with the one is with the power button also being an IR blaster, having it on the side wouldn't work particularly well either.

Though they could do something (workaround) similar to blackberry z10 and have an ability to unlock without having to press the power-button - such as a swipe up or such.

The physical home button doesn't bother me, i'm left handed ;-)

IR blaster could've been its own thing at the top.

Anyway, it is what it is. Come March 14th, decisions will be made. Gains and tradeoffs, et all.
