I haven’t had an iMac in several years (shortly after gen 1 iPad Pro came out), and I don’t really NEED a desktop at this point, but I’m a little jealous. I just love new tech, and I always loved my iMacs!

I'm surprised so far that there hasn't been a mention of THOSE bezels... However, I do rather have a hankering for one of the new ones but my late '15 5K is too good to sideline. I do wonder, though, why Apple deliberately decided not to go with 10Gb Ethernet when both the iMac Pro AND the Mini have it.

i needed a new mac now, but was planning to replace my 13" (2015) macbook pro with a new one july (supposed new mbp's coming then).... but the updated imacs called to me. went for one (i7 21"), and couldn't be happier...

The mini you need to BTO to get it.

I just received my 2019 i5 Vega 48, and really happy I pulled the trigger.

IF there is a redesign next year (nothing is confirmed), there are many things that we don't know what will happen. Will it be the new ARM processor? Will it have the T2 chip? Will it be able to have bootcamp no longer being an intel chip? Is it going to have any problems?

Taking all of the above into account, I rather have a secure good working machine that I know will last me through all the changes, and once the redesign hits the ground and stablishes, then I might think about changing.

THIS. Agree with you 100%.

These may well be the last great intel iMacs. Apple has a tendency to hit us with a 'gotcha' or two every time they release something redesigned.

These 2019 iMacs are a proven design, and machines that don't require me to update gigs and gigs of working software, or say goodbye to windows, or not be upgradable or etc., etc., etc., ...

Did you guys not want to wait for the new design? (possibly in 2020). I have a 2012 iMac, it's not even a retina display but with a redesign likely going to happen, it's hard to pull the trigger and buy now.

Personally no. I try to avoid purchasing the first revision of a new design for most products, not just computers. I did break this rule with the 2016 mbp, because I needed a laptop at the time, and welp, we all know how that went. The bigger mental hurdle was purchasing an all in one. Glad I did. On top of enjoying the Mac desktop experience, my desk is a lot less cluttered without a pc tower and cables snaking everywhere.

Couldn’t wait any longer. I had a maxed out 2008 8-core Mac Pro that was limping along on High Sierra through a patch, and the final blow was that it wouldn't get App Store updates or sync with my new iPad Mini 5. Time for a new machine! No way was I waiting for the new Mac Pro, as I suspect it will be overkill and too costly for my simple needs, so down to a 2019 i9 iMac with 1TB SSD or a iMac Pro. Opted for the former, and it flies. I’ve converted my 4 old 5400rpm HDDs from the Mac Pro to 2 SSDs and everything flies, even Time Machine backups! VERY happy with the updates, although even though it was definitely time to update my display as well I actually prefer my old matte 30” Apple Cinema Display over the glossy 5k 27” screen.

Now, anyone know what I should do with a 2008 Mac Pro and 30” Apple Cinema Display in good shape?? :D

Although i’m not a fan of the bezels, here’s my take on them. Everyone should be familiar with the “heat” issues with the iMacs and if Apple was to reduce the size of the bezels without enlarging the screen, the overall case would be smaller which would hamper cooling even more. So, IMHO, I don’t think we’ll see smaller bezels on the iMac until the either enlarge the screen or go with the cooling system in the iMac Pro.

No, Target Display Mode has been dead since the 5K iMac was introduced in Late 2014.

Thought so... is there any good rationale for this? I really struggle with the thought of buying an AIO when the display cannot be used past the CPUs useful life.

I was at the point where I needed a new computer. My 2012 mini was struggling with some image editing software and the hard drive was failing. So far I'm very happy with the 2019 iMac. I also think having use upgradeable ram is a real plus in terms of value. I looked at the 21" but upgrading ram in that is so much more expensive. And that seems to be where Apple is trending. The thing about waiting is you never really have clue as to what the next generation may bring and when it might appear. If you don't need a new computer now, the choice is more difficult.

TDM worked fine with most computers when the max resolution was 2560x1440, but 5K is 4x the resolution and back in 2014, that was some exotic stuff...not so much now, although you don’t exactly see a lot of 5K display running around in 2019.

Different strokes for different folks...I have zero struggle with putting an iMac out to pasture when it’s time to move on. My advice, buy top shelf and use it for as long as you can, then pass it down or sell it to someone who can use it. Otherwise, buy a Mac mini and a decent 4K or a TB3 5K.

This is a little off topic, but can someone point me to a good resource about using eGPU with iMac? Thinking about the future.

eGPU.io is a fairly good resource...with a touch of bitterness.

Unless you have some immediate need, the landscape is going to change in the next 3-6 months as AMD 7nm Navi rolls out.

Okay I asked in another thread, but since more people have posted here, maybe someone will answer sooner - what’s the difference in SSD versus a regular hard drive? For someone who hasn’t used an iMac in several years (iOS only), what would I be missing with basic usage having a hard drive vs SSD?

what’s the difference in SSD versus a regular hard drive?

For basic understanding, just google it, there's a ton of videos and articles covering this question. Hard drives have (typical) transfer speeds around 100-200 MB/s, mechanical parts that can fail and get hot. SSDs have no mechanical parts, run cooler and have transfer speeds between 500MB/s and 3000MB/s.

Missing? Having to wait for your computer to boot up, load a program etc. ;) Boot-up time and program loading times speed up by a factor of 5-10 with an SSD.

So it’s worth it to lose lots of storage (I’ll have to go from 1TB to 256 GB if I go from a regular hard drive to SSD)?

IDK how much that’ll affect me because I’m not a digital hoarder by any means, but I don’t wanna regret having so little storage.

I'm on the fence, I have a 2015 5K with SSD, but I'm almost positive next year will have to be a redesign...

LOOOOONG time member here. I just purchased the 2019 iMac 3.7 i5 w/512gb SSD. I just have to say this thing absolutely flies! It's replacing my 2015 5k iMac (the first 5k iMac) and it just runs through everything I throw at it. I edit video and photos and I've never seen it so fast. The SSD I'm sure is the main reason but it's just a much faster machine. I know we see a lot of complaints but just want to mention that I'm happy with it!

Hi mate,

Haver you ever edited 4k video ?. I am thinking to buy it, and my main purpose will be photography and video (as hobby).

I usually use photoshop, capture one and Lightroom. I have a MacBook Air i5 i1.6 4GB and it is not enough powerful to edite video. it takes too long to export a short video.

thank you.
