Please accept my condolences.

…I often feel like a little boy whose desperately looking for his Mam and Dad and once he finds them and is with them, everything will be OK............. unfortunately I'm never going to find them and be with them again.

I hate this feeling, but I took some comfort when I read an article which stated " you get through it, yes, and you'll probably get used to it, but you don't get over it. "

As we grieve the passing of our parents, we must give ourselves time, start to enjoy life again and always remember that our parents would want us to be happy. They wouldn't want us to be unhappy.
So very true.

New doc for the M3 iMac from Minisopuru (via Amazon). It gives you additional ports not included with the iMac: SD slot, Micro SD slot, USB-A and an additional USB-C port. You can also install an internal SSD within it. It’s colour matched with the iMac (other colours available) and it serves as a pedestal the iMac’s base fits neatly into resulting in a factory like look.

It's official--I presently hate the new Apple Music app. I want iTunes back where I can purchase songs I search for of my own choosing individually without having to pay for a damned subscription.

If the old way is at all possible in this new app it sure as hell isn't obvious.

The practice today of making everything a subscription is total garbage and irritates me no end.

If this is the way it is I will definitely keep my old computer so I’ll still have access to the old iTunes app and can still purchase music as I prefer and transfer it to my iPod Touch.

The old iMacs had optical output, if that matters to you? I believe the TOSLINK (S/PDIF) was removed in 2017 and later.

I can't comment on Apple Music, because I still have macOS Monterey, with Music Version 1.2.5.7 (and that is not easy to navigate either). But it has iTunes Store

The Apple Music has iTunes store, but there is no (obvious) way for me to search for anything other than what they are showing me. There is no search window where you would type in what you‘re looking for then peruse the results. How could they remove such a simple and useful feature?

On a more positive note the sound system on this M3 iMac is respectable. Reasonable base, but also good clarity. I feel like I’m hearing things in familiar music I‘m not sure I heard before.

No. Maybe because I have never joined Apple Music? There is simply no search panels whatsoever for the iTunes store. There is only a search window for searching my library.
I am not an Apple Music user either. I refuse to pay a subscription, and prefer to purchase LPs or CDs anyway. That way I can actually own my copy. But I bought 3 albums 😆 in iTunes. And I log in with my apple ID.

In any case. I hope someone who use the latest macOS can give you better advice

Another very positive note. I just installed SketchUp Pro 2024 (optimized for Apple silicon) and it runs very smoothly, very quickly and also looks much better on my M3 iMac. On my old iMac complex models could be rather jerky to navigate around.

If you "want iTunes back", you can GET iTunes back by using "Retroactive", which is FREE:

Be aware, however, that it might not allow the purchases you want.
But much of "what was" is still there.

I'm not sure I like System Settings as much as System Preferences.
Yeah, they really hosed this quite badly. As a longtime Mac user, not a fan of the Mac getting warmed over iOS user interfaces on things like this. The only saving grace is that the search bar works quite well for surfacing all the settings that are nested in weird places now.

My condolences on the loss of your mother.

The screen shot provided by Regulus67 shows the search field selected in the left side panel. This field has to be selected for the iTunes store search option to show. Check that on your system and you should be able to search iTunes or your library. You don't need to join Apple Music for this to be available.

Okay, I don't know what I did, but I seemed to have toggled something that allows me to search the iTunes Store just as I used to on my old Mac.

I looked up a band in my library which also showed me the album from where the song I had came from. When I clicked to see the entire album I got a page with ability to search the iTunes website.

Weird.

My condolences for your loss. I hope you are managing ok, and are enjoying your new iMac!

I have also updated to an Apple Silicon MacBook Air from my old 2012 one running Mojave with iTunes. I have disabled Apple Music stuff in Music app's settings, and changed the View setting and edited the Library sidebar to remove anything I didn't want. Here's what my app looks like - basically like iTunes used to. I also hide anything not downloaded, so this is all local music. I do however, have similar annoyances about searching the iTunes Store. It likes to randomly not accept clicks sometimes when searching and will refresh at random too. But, it works, and I just locally browse my music most times I use the app anyway.

Enjoy your new Mac!

Firstly, got SketchUp Pro 2024 up and running. I needn't have worried about enough RAM with 16GB instead of 24GB given my old iMac had 32GB RAM. 16GB with the M3 processor allows me to interact with my most complex models very smoothly--it's amazing! The raw models (before rendering) look light years better with Apple silicon than they ever did on my old system.

I also installed Maxwell 5/SketchUp for Mac and it's up and running. But I have a wrinkle. For some reason I cannot find the plugins selection on the SketchUp work space that would allow me to launch Maxwell from within SketchUp as I did on my old system. This is really bugging me and I feel it could be something very simple, but for the life of me I can't find it.

I have also installed Adobe Photoshop Elements and I kind of regret it. My copy of CS4 on my old machine was so easy and intuitive for me to use, but Elements is nothing like that. There is little familiar about it. I don't think it's possible in any way to install my old CS4 onto my M3 computer. If I can't get Elements to work as I like I will have to look at some other non-Adobe alternative.

I would take a look at Pixelmator Pro. I admit after years of Photoshop it did require me to rethink a few things, but *most* things I need are there and equally important (to me at least) is that it's a really smooth experience. Worth a go.

I am currently comparing Pixelmator and Affinity.

Ah ok. Yes, I have both. Happy to have Affinity too, it does do more. I just find most of the time Pxp to be more my thing and Photomator is also v useful as a Lightroom alternative.

Added a Samsung 990 PRO 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 into the Minisopuru dock for added storage and backups. It took about 20 minutes to do a Time Machine backup. On my old 2011 iMac that would take about three times as long.
