So with the 6970M GPU essentially being an under clocked desktop 6850 Desktop GPU we should be able to over clock it in Windows Bootcamp to squeeze some extra performance out of it. Better ramp up the fans though to keep it all cool.

Does anyone know how the 6770 on the base 27" compares to the 5750 on the high end 27" July 2010 model?

It kills me that the GPU isn't upgradeable on the base 27" iMac so I'm contemplating spending the extra $300 for the processor bump (which I don't need) and the 6970 (which I want).

so how does the 6750m compare to the 6770m? Anyone got a list of benchmarks comparing the two? Just want to know if the 6770m is significantly faster, as im thinking between the base 21.5 inch and the high end model.

21.5" AMD 6750M,$1199
21.5" AMD 6770M $1499
27" AMD 6770M $1699
27" AMD 6970M $1999

I think that`s AWESOME upgrade. Are you also happy?

What a rip off, why are they putting mobile GPU's in a desktop? Only an i5? rip offfffffffffffffffffff

I don't know about the 5750 to 6770 comparison (because the 5750 is actually a 5850M), but I think the 5750 is better.

However, the 6970 trumps them all, neatly. If you are looking for a 27'', the $300 is a no brainer, IMO.

When I compare these specs with other allinones, these specs are great. To my knowledge the Imacs are the only AIO's that have desktop cpu's, others 'only' have mobile cpu's. I think the GPU's are quite nice for such a thin design.

Wow i didn't expect such GPUs. Apart from the Super high end model, the GPUs (6770m, 6750m) don't really pull away from the 15inch MBP that has 6750m 1GB.

Quite disappointed in Apple this time...but now that it is in 'mobile' format it's going to be less confusing to compare GPUs =p:p :p

There seems to be a lot of moaning in the thread from people who aren't familiar with how the iMac specs normally go.

The modern iMacs have all used mobile graphics cards in them, because they're essentially a laptop in an iMac form factor. The best you can really hope for is the top spec graphics card in the range of the company that Apple is currently using, and that's exactly what we got. The extra VRAM is a nod to the fact that the 27" has a silly high resolution, so it's meant to go someway towards helping that.

I don't know what you were expecting.

6970 2GB desktop edition 250W under full load, you would have to make the iMac thicker and install larger fans to keep it cool, 6970M 75-100 Watts

Hmm... Which GPU would you recommend for MMO`s (WoW; Rift) and FPS (Crysis 2; Portal 2). I don`t need native resolution (if 27") gaming, 1080p (21.5) would be enough for me.

Well you get the best GPU you can in the 21" model. Though it's not going to be good for Crysis 2. Might be acceptable for Rift. Should be fine for WoW and Portal.

But it still could of at least gotten the 1GB BTO like the 15" MBP did.

Edit: Oops, the 15" MBP has the 6750. The high end iMac 21.5" has the 6770. I guess that's why?

YES!

But what happened to that sandy bridge thing people kept waffling on about, is it here or not?:confused:

Come on, if you don't know then I take it you don't need it. Seems like there are a lot of programers or web designers nowadays days or some just want the latest and greatest. Will be upgrading from 2009 mac on a redesign iMac hopefully next year. Can't justify buying this model with same bezel I already have now. Besides the longer I wait the better product I will get in future. Enjoy your macs great machines.

Here's what I'm wondering: how much of an improvement will the 2gb option be over the standard 1gb option for the 6970? I cant imagine it yielding a lot more FPS in most games.

Well start looking for benchmarks. 2gb helps with the higher resolution of the 27" monitor. If I had the choice of a 1gb or 2gb on the 21" model i'd get the 1gb, no reason for 2gb at that resolution. But that changes with the higher end model.

And for me I want this thing to play games as best it can and last me so i'll pay for the extra performance.

While I agree with you, I'm not so sure that the increased memory will give enough significant gains to justify the additional $100.00 price tag... not to mention I would have to wait to receive it in the mail, as opposed to getting it right now at my local Apple store. :)

That's fine. It's your call.

I want the i7 and I wanted the 2gb card and a 2tb hard drive. So I have to order it. Apple says it will be at my house sometime from this Friday to next Tuesday so that's not too long.

I will use everything the CPU and GPU can give me between video encoding and gaming.

Really, 1GB video should be standard on all desktops now.

Or at least on all but the base model.
