how much better is the ati 4850 radeon series compared to the nvidie 9400M series in terms of power?

Do you feel the 4850 radeon GPU will be sufficient enough to play games like dragon age, sc2, and diablo 3 with relatively high game detail settings?

i have the desktop version of that gpu and its good i dont know about the one in the imac as i heard its the notebook one and also the desktop gpu so i dont know

The ati 4850 is much much much better than the integrated 9400m. It will go very well with most games.

Cheers,

The HD 4670 in the baseline 27" is also quite good. I haven't had any issues running LOTRO in bootcamp or WoW in OSX - both with high details in the native resolution.

well i can run wow on my mini with the 9400 graphics with setting turned down and get it play good even turned up i can get about 30 fps in certain areas as long as it does not dip to below 15 i think i am good

I don't know how much better the ATI Radeon 4850 is compared to the NVidia 9400m in terms of numbers, but I can tell you that my i7 with 4850 can run Crysis in native resolution (2560x1440) with everything set on high settings in DX10 quite smoothly.
In Fallout 3 I can max everything and still the gaming experience is very smooth.
Lord of the Rings Online can also be ran on 4850 with i7's native resolution with Ultra high settings turned on and have everything running smoothly.

9400m on my MBP can also run Fallout 3 & LotRO but I had to decrease the eyecandy and also set the resolution to lower than native to be able to play those games without hitching.

You could check Youtube videos of iMac 27" gaming, for example this Left for Dead 2 video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u8OvpypeAc or this Crysis video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WC2jZHvgo8 to see how well the 4850 is performing with those games.

WoW is much older than Dragon's Age and doesn't require nearly as much resources to play.

First of all to the OP, research first! And get a better iMac, one with the 4670 at least.

I highly doubt that. What frame rate are you getting?

That mac crysis video got me really excited about this Monday when my iMac comes. Where can I pick up the cheapest copy of windows xp? Or should I not give them the profit and just use xp black pirated.;)

Source based games aren't that demanding.

I don't know the exact FPS as I dont know how enable it ingame but I guess it has to be over 30 as I don't get any serious hitching and / or lagging while playing. I also don't know if the graghics get more demanding as I make more progress ingame but atleast the beginning (beach environment) has been more than a good experience.
Please note that high setting is not the highest the game has to offer. I think the max. setting is extra high which does not run smooth enough atleast for me.

In this Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WC2jZHvgo8 this guy says he is running the game with extra high settings and it seems quite smooth to me. I don't know about the resolution though...

PS. I'm running Crysis on Win 7 64bit.

does anyone know how the 4670 compares to other cards (such as 9400m, gt 120, gt130) because I can't seem to find any benchmarks or videos or anything.... I know that the 4850 is great and the 9400 is absolutely horrible.... but nothing about the 4670....

Google is your friend, friend :) (http://xtreview.com/review229.htm)
There's a comparison of some video cards, including 4670 and 4850. The 4850 isn't really that great but it is better than 4670 or 9400. I think 4850 is about 2 year old technology as we speak...
