Staring at lights = bad for eyes. That's all. Staring at the light bulb in your lamp for a long period of time would be bad for your eyes.

Try the tips I mentioned above. 20-20-20 rule is probably the best remedy for the 9-5er on their computer 8+ hours a day.

Thanks! I will try the dimmer app. I am also going to try a curtain on the french door that is near my desk and perhaps that will help with the glare. It's is difficult trying to work when you can see yourself in the display.

You know if there's a lot of light in your room you might be better off turning UP the brightness so that the iMac screen is easier to focus on. At the moment the glare might be an issue, but reducing the brightness is making seeing the screen even more difficult. I have my iMac in a brightly lit bay window and during the daytime I generally have the brightness nearly all the way up. At night is when I turn it down.

I wonder why we always have to blame our Macs :)

Have you considered consulting an optician? It could be your eyes.

Look for
Dimmer.app
I think I got it from MacUpdates.com, but I'm not sure. It gives more control than Apple gives you, and a lot more adjustments than just brightness.

Hope that helps, :)

Edit: I forgot to mention that its free.

it works ...

i have some like that for driving from ray ban , a bit more expensive but optical correct and it makes a huge difference using a new iMac with mirror finish display and so far the only solution i could come up with that really works and does not spoil the looks in any way ...might look a bit silly if you sit in front of it , but what else can people do who need to sit in front of a mirror aeh iMac :D lucky me i only have to sit in front of one if i have to install something or upgrade at my mates iMac 27" as he is far to scared to do anything on the iMac as he is a ex windows user and really scared about installing a virus by mistake even i told him so often that the chance is near nil as its OSX and not windows xp, ...but working on it all day no thank you i would not even take one as a present and prefer to sit on my matte display 17" core duo instead

I had this problem when I first got my 21.5" iMac. Turn down the brightness by a ton. That solved my issue.

Just turn the brightness down. You not only save yourself eye strain and headache, but quite a bit of energy too.

Though it still boggles me why the iMac doesn't already yet include an ambient light sensor like almost every Apple display product has.
