If you go into a local store to buy the memory what do you ask for? I'm guessing you need to be specific as the people that work in these type of stores probably will not know, especially for a new model.

You are looking for DDR2-667 SODIMMs

Also, make sure to verify that the modules can be brought back for a full refund (no restocking charge) if they do not work.

Thank you. I just went on-line to see what Best Buy and Staples carry, and neither one of them stock memory for the Imac.

Uh, yes they do. Plenty of them. There's absolutely nothing special about memory for the iMac, or any other Mac made right now...it's industry standard memory. It's just atrociously expensive at those stores. You can get 2GB online for what you're going to pay for 1GB in the stores. Examples:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7332558&st=DDR2-667&type=product&id=1118845270113
http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/s...atalogId=10051&productId=161219&cmArea=SEARCH
http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/s...atalogId=10051&productId=146373&cmArea=SEARCH

Those literally cost twice as much as much better brands do online.

Thanks for the info. When I ran the memory locator script at Best Buy it stated that it didn't have the memory, but I was looking based on the manufacturer and model.

I just spent a fortune on my new Mac, so I think I'll buy the 1 gig from Newegg for now. That should hold me over for some time as my Imac is performing nicely now.

Thanks everyone!

Locally, Fry's also has some deals on DDR2 PC-2 5300 RAM modules through today:
Crucial and Kingston 1Gb modules for $45, and
2Gb Kingston module for $75

One more question (sorry to be a pain). Is DDR2 667 acceptable? A prior posting mentioned DDR 667. I'm not sure what the "2" refers to.

Thanks!

The prior posts in this thread did say DDR2-667. It has to be DDR2, the second generation of DDR type memory. DDR (DDR1) won't work.

Yes, DDR2-667 is what you want.
The other thing to make sure of is that you get laptop ram (200 pin) and not desktop ram (240 pin).

I just installed 2GB of Mushkin RAM in my 20" iMac. I purchased it at Newegg for $47 per 1GB module and received $20 off my entire order since they had a promotion (I basically got the Ram for about $37 per 1GB module).

At any rate, I was a little surprised to see that the RAM that came installed in my iMac was "Hynix". I have never used that brand before as I thought they were cheap. My iMac is running much snappier now. I definitely think 2GB is worth the upgrade. It was a very easy install as well.

Interesting. Both my old Ti Powerbook and Dell Inspiron P4 came with Hynix RAM installed. Never really seen the stuff for sale, however.

Of course you don't, because Hynix isn't a retail brand, they are a chip foundry. What you will get is Hynix chips branded as OWC or Patriot or whatever company is buying them for resale.

Apple of course buys only from the foundries, not from retail sources.

The specs are correct. Is it compatible? Probably, but we can't say for sure.
A 2 Gb can run alongside a 1 Gb in the Core2Duo iMacs

can u install ram on your machine from different manufacturers?

Yes.

Welcome to new MR Readers.
Since this is approximately the 12th time we have addressed these same iMac/DDR2 memory questions in the past week, I heartily recommend trying the Search function of the website before posting. All will be revealed...

For a local online store I use can highly recommend http://www.streetwise.com.au. They also have a useful Mac Memory Selector.

I must admit though, I ordered 1GB memory for my new iMac (which I have been waiting to ship for the past week :() online from Crucial. Despite the exchange rate and international shipping I still saved about AU$50 for a quality stick. Delivery was only two business days from the US to country Victoria!

Newegg and OWC are not an option as they don't ship to AUS.

Now, if I only had my new iMac to put it in..... :(
