Please see my thread, the fan noise on my previous machine was like dadadadadada. I have return that one. Now I got a new one with same configure(512ssd), the noise problem come back to normal but there still have some dadadadadada fan noise.

Sorry to hear that, but with now a couple of people on the board with the same issue, there are likely many more faulty machines which are either reported by other people or not reported at all. Anyway, I hope Apple is aware of this. If my replacement shows the same defect, I am not going for another one, but will wait a year.

I guess this issue happened during the shipping. My second one was come here from CA by air, and the fan clicking noise seem been reduced. The reason why people didn't report this as a common issue is the fan noise is not obvious.

Hoping your replacements arrive soon guys. And I hope this is an isolated incident. Mine is due on Monday.

I guess I am in the same boat. i5/395/512SSD, assembled in Ireland, shipped 10/22. I am using it in a quiet room and I hear constant fan noise at 1200 rpm. It is definitely louder than I had expected it to be, about as loud as my 2013 rMBP at medium load.

When I put my ear on the rear enclosure I also hear a faint tapping sound which gets faster when I increase fan speed. However, I am not quite sure if the tapping is audible on the outside, sitting in front of the Imac.

If I cover the fan opening on the back most of the noise disappears, which makes me think that much of what I hear is not the fan itself but the noise of the airstream going through the grid. It would surprise me if there were bigger variations between different machines in this respect?

As different people have different noise sensitivity I am now wondering how quiet the new Imac really is. Does the fan/airstream noise that I experience have to be considered normal? Or should I get a replacement?

Those of you who do not have complaints: are your Imacs definitely quiet or could it be that you just have a higher noise tolerance / more ambient noise? What do you hear when you put your ear close to the fan opening on the back? Is it still quit there or is the fan/airstream noticeable?

Thanks for all advice!

Torrin

EDIT: The tapping/clicking IS audible when sitting in front of the iMac. It is faint, but one can hear it. Seems like the intensity varies, right now it sounds just like the OPs sound recording.

I put the phone up to the rear vent for the apple technician to hear and he said the noise was not normal. I hope its not a common fault for iMacs built in Ireland. Sending mine back tomorrow for a replacement.

Thanks for the feedback! I will monitor mine a bit longer (until the first wave of iMac orders is through) and then will see whether i send it back in or not.

Mine gets hot even by just playing a 4k video on youtube.

check this
Check it in firefox. Tools-> Options. USE HARDWARE ACCELERATION

Only time I heard the fan was when I was transferring several movies at once and even then I barely heard the fan, have the 512 SSD in mine. My only issues have been beach balls in El Capitan (for internal and external dvd players and once during initial shut down.) I suspect that's teething pains with El Capitan though as I'm used to beachballs with the dvd player in my 2010.

May everyone who has issues get theirs replaced / refunded etc.

I was very happy with my i5/512 ssd/M395 until I heard the exact same clicking noise. I thought maybe I was just too sensitive, but after reading all the posts here something must be wrong. Mine also shipped from Ireland on the 22nd.

Anyone got their replacement yet?
Anyone having the same problem on a machine not shipped from Ireland?

It might still be that all/most new Macs come with the clicking/ticking noise, but that some of us are more sensitive to it than others. I hope that´s not the case as I am considering to order a replacement on Monday.

After starting my iMac I can only hear the fan/airstream noise in the beginning. I am not overly happy with it, as the 1200 rpm in my opinion are more than necessary to cool the machine during idle, but I can live with the airstream noise. The ticking does first set in after some minutes (temperature related?). That plus the fact that a considerable number of you also has noticed it gives me reason to hope that the noise is due to a defect or manufacturing tolerances, however I am not entirely sure.

@AnTaR3s: Do you already have an arrival date for your replacement?

Mine has the clicking noise again but before sending it in, I would like to wait for your replacement. You know what to look (hear) for and can tell whether the replacement has the same clicking sound or not.

Greetings from Munich...

Ah, Munich. I have been living/working there for half a year some time ago. Great city!
I am still waiting and it will be at least another week before I get my replacement. They picked up the other one on Thursday, but since then I have not seen an update on the processing...my guess is sometime in the week Nov 9th - 13th. I would love to have this machine for the Fallout 4/Starcraft LotV release!! :)

What web browser are you using?

If I play 4K video on youtube using Safari, my CPU doesn't go above 35 and my fan stays at 1200rpm.

I'm not sure about the video in question but it should be mentioned that 4k@60fps uses VP9 compression which Safari does not support. So it can be tough to compare apples to apples between browsers if one is using a less resource hungry video with a different codec.

You can test your browsers for youtube here.

Did som more testing under different thermal conditions today and my conclusion is that the ticking cannot be considered normal.

As there are some who, while are bothered by the fan noise, do not experience the ticking, I am now going to order a replacement. If it has the same issue I will probably just skip this iMac generation.

I'm not hearing any ticking or tapping noises but I can hear the airflow at 1200 RPM is a quiet environment. Also note I can hear the clock ticking too, it's quiet in here. Wondering if this is the same for anybody else?

A Senior Apple Care Specialist from Cork called me in the afternoon, wanting to get to know more about the noise/ticking problem. The friendly lady asked if I could do a video recording, but since my iMac is already back in its box I sent her links to this thread and the OPs audio recording (and to a similar thread in a German forum: http://www.macuser.de/threads/imac-5k-late-2015-ssd-lueftergeraeusch.735654/)

So there is hope that the issue might get fixed. I am actually quite impressed by the fast response time, indicating good internal processes.

@Torrin

Thanks for sharing that information. Good to know, that Apple has caught wind of the issue. In the meantime, I received confirmation that my "damaged" iMac arrived at wherever it was supposed to go. Still waiting for shipment of a new one, though!

I got a new iMac last week - Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015, customised with a Core i7, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD.

The fan normally stays around 1200rpm, during which time it is silent, but it does sometimes ramp up to double that, even when (AFAIK) there's no heavy load.

No clicking with mine, though.
