Internet explorer?

"Exploring" my new Mac (I'm a recent emigrant from PC land) I have learned that for some websites I need Internet Explorer which I have further learned is a "windows" program.

Given that I "need" IE, which version is best for Mac Panther? And by downloading it will I be susceptible to viruses? And must I dedicate a segment of my hard drive for windows programs?

Thanks much,
Painstakingly working my way through Macland

Internet Explorer is not even available anymore. It hasn't been developed since 2003 or so. Instead you could use Opera and make it appear as Internet Explorer from the preferences to trick websites into thinking you're using IE.

A good application for OS X is Growl which works with many other applications like Adium and Transmission. You should get it! For .7z files Ez 7z is the only one I think for OS X.

You can forget about Internet Explorer but you do need an alternative to Safari. I recommend Firefox, "the best" browser, which by means of a plug-in named IETab (http://ietab.mozdev.org) allows you to visit IE-only pages smoothly

Hope that helps

Great list!

Unfortunately due to copying and pasting some of the links are wrong.
Shouldn't be too big a problem for anybody to use google and find them his or her self, but I just thought I'd point it out.

First thing to do is get TV in that thing:D Elgato's Hybrid does a swell job. There now your computer is complete. whats a entertainment center without TV.

hi!! Could u tell me more about that? I don't know nothing!
I've got a macbook

Skip the elgato and just download azureus bittorrent client and TVShows. Set TVShows to download shows you like starting with whatever episode in whichever quality you like. No need for commercials or junk TV. tvrss.net also has show listings which are sometime more comprehensive in case TVShows has a hard time finding that certain episode in 720P.

Hi, I've just found this fantastic list on overclockers.co.uk forums. I'm not sure if i should reproduce it in full. But it's too good, so here goes:

(If we could tidy this thread up a bit i think it would make a great sticky!!)

hey, keep the threads cool please.

as for my recomdation I would recommend getting Aperture, Final Cut Express and Stand for Safari.

and remember to play nicely in the forums please.

Here's some additions from my list. Very similar to those before (not necessarily in order):

1. MS Office - to do work at home....
2. Acrobat Reader - gotta have it, don't you...
3. Handbrake - converting DVDs
4. Audio Hijacker - lots of uses. Cassettes/LP's to iTunes.
5. Mac The Ripper - nice for ripping DVD's
6. Notepad Deluxe - nice to have an extended notes page.
7. Firefox - I try to use Safari most of the time, but some pages just don't work there.
8. Super Duper! - not bad backup. Time Machine might be better though....
9. Quicken 2007 - OK, I'll take the hit here. I use this program constantly. I just upgraded from Quicken 2004 to Quicken 2007. Not really worth it. Everything seems about the same except for a few menu changes and colors on the graphs (neither for the better). But I think it sets me up nicely for next generation Quicken in a few years. In terms of handling my finances, it really does do the trick and I find it helpful. I concede that it isn't as good as the Windows version, but I keep trying to convince Intuit to stay in the Mac game.
10. Turbotax - it just makes taxes so simple....
11. Disk Warrior 4.1 - saved my bacon a couple of times. Good drive repair program.
12. Perian
13. Flip4Mac WMV
14. Isquint
15. Monolingual was good, but doesn't work with Leopard. I don't know if there is a working language removal tool. That always saves a lot of disk space....
16. MP3 Trimmer - I found this very useful in merging tracks on audiobooks and editing files coming in off of Audio Hijack.
