New iMac

Then jump. If you need a new computer then buy one. If you don't then wait, it really doesn't matter.
Yeah, I don't get what you want us to do. I don't think Apple is going to be hurt too much if you don't buy a computer.

Okay, I'm not wanting anyone to organise my life for me, but I mainly do video editing, DVD creation and music stuff...now the iMac is marketed as being perfect for all those things, but is the PC really that bad at it? Or am I just being suckered in by Apple's hype?
The iMac is perfect for that, if you don't mind waiting a bit longer for your Effects to render and DVDs to transcode. A Mac Pro will do those things faster, but as far as the actual editing goes, an iMac will do great (I'll be buying one soon for those reasons). A PC will also work if you have the patience to use software besides Final Cut Studio and a system that you may have to tinker with a bit more to get everything to work properly (the whole "Mac's just work" thing has truth to it). It's not that PCs are bad at video/dvd/music work, it's just that apple gives you a prosumer turnkey system with software that's fairly intuitive and integrates well (iLife) or you pay for the higher end apps (Final Cut, Logic, etc) that have good user support and work like a pro. Pro's work on PC's too. To each their own.
Buy a refurb if you can't wait. You'll save $200 on the 20" version or $300 on the 24" version over the regular price. That'll make up for some of the could-have-gotten-more-for-the-same-price frustration when new models come out, which could be weeks or months.

Hang in there I'm in the same boat! Don't listen to guys that are saying that they don't get it and what do you want us to do. I say if you can't support somebody don't say a DAMN THING. I've never had a MAC so I don't know that it's all that much better and there is the problem. After all this waiting it better perform some kind of a Miracle!
Waiting for new iMac....money burning a hole in my pocket.....even comtemplating jumping ship back to PCLand, just to avoid waiting for stuff like this.....help.....

Macs are great things to own - attractive, different and full of quality. The operating system is the thing you'll actually be using though, and it's far nicer to use than Windows.

Thanks for the support driver.joe....I'll wait this one out, I'm sure it'll be worth it. I've been using Macs for the last 2 years, and like most people on this site, can vouch for how much of an improvement they are over Windows.

If you really want a new iMac, just go out and get the current one. Apple will always come out with something better once you finally make your purchase.

Intel iMac came out 10/01/06. Core 2 duo iMac came out 6/9/06. That would be eight months, which leads me to believe that you're not telling the entire truth. Not the best way to give advice, is it?

The current iMacs are fantastic computers, very fast and very practical. The thing to remember is, if you wait for the new iMacs to come along, then you really should wait for the Revision B ones. I know from experience that 1st revision Apple hardware is generally pretty rubbish, you wouldn't believe the incredible number of issues I've had with my CoreDuo MacBook Pro, and loads of other people report similar issues...

...But unless there's been a price rise, it's ten month old pricing too.
The trouble with Apple gear is there doesn't seem to be any decline in prices as the line ages. I hope Apple would gain more marketshare so they can actually afford to offer more customisations. With that there would be no more of these threads anymore. You can buy what you can afford at any time of the year and when a new design comes out you have lesser regrets too.
The trouble with that line of argument is that every single revision is the 1st version of its revision.
It can much be argued that the current SR MacBook Pros are actually the first revision of MacBook Pros with a LED backlight and a all new logic board design too. Still pleases me heck of a lot more than the Rev C 2.16/2.33 MacBook Pro that I owned.
Just to point this out, this post confused the hell out of me but then I realized that 10/01/06 means January tenth, 2006 (for those who are from the states or elsewhere)

You mean a 24" Core 2 Duo iMac? There was no such thing as a 24" iMac G5.

I probably wouldn't have been able to afford the best imac G6 anyway. And I ALWAYS go for the best one.
Only the iMac Core 2 Duo is 24", and there won't be an iMac G6. The next iMac will still be a Core 2 Duo (only slightly faster)
