I thought the consensus when the iPad 7 came out that it does support fast charging? Does it not support that?

but all I know to look for to tell that it’s working is when you plug it in, you’re supposed to hear two songs instead of one?

This is the charger I‘m using:

https://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B072K5ZJXF/

And this is the brand new, just bought in the last week, cable that I‘m using, which is plugged into the one USB-C port on the above charger:

https://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B07H256MBK/

Do I have all the right pieces?

i just got this in the mail yesterday. So I can still return it to Best Buy. if it doesn’t support fast charging, I’m thinking about returning it and getting an iPad Air 3. I’m sure I saw that the iPad Air 3 supports fast charging. Can anyone confirm that?

Are the only real differences between the iPad Air 3 and the iPad 7 a little bigger screen and fast charging support?

EDIT: I just looked at the Apple web site. Apparently the iPad Air 3 display is a little bigger, is True Tone and is laminated. Has some feature I’ve never heard of on the camera that the iPad 7 doesn’t. And comes with more storage in the lowest model which I do not need. The main thing for me would be fast charging, which may not be important to everyone, isn’t even listed in the compare iPads specs. But that I really want.

The air is also about twice as fast with the A12 vs the A10 in the ipad 7

A10 is still a great chip but the A12 is a noticeable boost

There are a lot of differences between the 10.2 and iPad Air 3. The screen is larger and laminated, there's more ram (2GB vs 3GB), processor is much more potent, and fast charging is only available on the mini 5, A3, and Pros.

Ram is actually the same. The 10.2 also runs 3gb of ram

Nope.
ipad 2019 has 3 Gb of RAM as well.

I would buy an Air 3 for two reasons: A12 chip is much more future proof than the already aging A10 and the better display.

The main thing I was asking about was fast charging. I got a little ahead of myself and started talking about the differences between the two.

I’m Googling all over the place and finding on various non Apple sites that the iPad Air 3 does support fast charging.

i found on the official Apple user forums that the iPad 7 does not support fast charging. Which is just odd as hell to me because I followed the release of the iPad 7 and the subsequent chatter. And everyone was saying the iOad 7 supports fast charging.

Various Non-Apple sites? Take a look at the tech specs of each model on https://www.apple.com/ipad

Also don't believe everything you read and hear. Check multiple sources and always go to the official Apple page aswell.

iPad (7th gen) doesn't support fast charging, i don't even know if there is an iPad that supports fast charging at all. Yes, the 7th gen is newer than the Air 3, but the Air 3 does have the better hardware (it's also more expensive). The 7th gen is basically the same device as the 6th gen from March 2018, 7th gen just has a larger screen (+ slightly higher resolution), an extra 1 GB of RAM and the Smart Connector. And the Space Gray color is darker.

https://www.apple.com/ipad-10.2/specs/

Doesn't say anything about fast charging in the specs. Same goes for the Air 3, the mini 5 and the Pro.

you go to that first link you posted, click on iPad Pro, then click on Tech Specs, and wether or not the iPad Pro supports fast charging isn’t even listed. And I know it does support it because I’ve seen a USB-C cable plug into one and at the top where of the iPad screen where the battery icon is, it says “Fast Charging”.

Now the tech specs page does say it comes with a USB-C cable. But that’s because the iPad Pro doesn’t have a lightning port on it. It just has a USB-C port.

And I know some devices that have lightning ports support fast charging because my iPhone 8 has a lightning port and it supports fast charging.

But all the iPad pages I’ve seen on Apple’s web site, there’s just no mention of if the iPad supports fast charging or not. Apple has just decided not to mention it it seems.

Here’s a Tech Radar page that says the iPad Air 3 supports fast charging, even though no Apple site I’ve seen says it does:

https://www.techradar.com/reviews/ipad-air-2019
[automerge]1576354771[/automerge]
And apparently here’s a Tech Radar web site saying the iPad 7 is fast charge capable:

”So the iPad 10.2 is fast-charge compatible, which is something we found out about the iPad Air and iPad mini 5 earlier this year. But all come with 12W iPad 4-era adapters, so you need to make an investment – or borrow a higher-watt iPhone, iPad or Mac charger.”

https://www.techradar.com/reviews/ipad-102
[automerge]1576354833[/automerge]
Only thing I know to do to test if this iPad 7 can fast charge is to time the charging the speed I guess...

Doing some research doesn’t seem like any of the iPads support fast charging. I love how people say you should have bought the air 3. Sure it’s good but at that point you should have just went with the pro 11. I have been without an iPad for over a year (had a pro 10.5 that I sold after it developed the famous white spot). I picked up the iPad 7 when it was on sale for 229 on cyber Monday. It performs just as fast and smooth as I remember the pro did. Don’t notice any slow downs and the screen looks great! Only thing I miss is the 4 speakers that the pro has. The 7 has the same amount of ram, speakers and smart connector as the air 3. The screens about the same size and in everyday use you won’t notice a performance difference. The iPad 7 benchmarks just as fast as a 2015 i5 13” Mac book pro. That’s crazy for a device at this price. In my opinion they should just have the iPad and iPad Pro.

Does anybody know a benchmark app that Imcan set the time for how long it will run?

I‘m gonna run down the battery and see how long it takes to charge it back using 1.) a USB-C lightning cable, then 2.) a regular USB lightning cable (I think they’re called USB-A).

I had a Battery Life app that used to report battery wear, charging voltage and current but I think that stopped working on iOS 11 or 12. If you've got something like a Kill-A-Watt or a smart plug, you can just plug in the charging brick to that to check power consumption.

Do note, it will only fast charge below a certain charge level (50%, iirc?). I've also had issues with an Anker PowerStrip not fast charging my 2nd gen iPad Pro 10.5 and 12.9, but an Anker 18W USB-C brick worked (obviously not full 30W speed but still faster 18W).

While I also think the iPad 7 is very nice for its (sale) pricing, I don't quite agree with this sentiment now that we're starting to see discounts on the iPad Air 3 as well.

Looking at both MSRP and discounted pricing, I think there's room enough for the Air 3 in the lineup.

iPad 7 Wi-Fi
32GB $329 / $229-249
128GB $429 / $329

iPad Air 3 Wi-Fi
64GB $499 / $399
256GB $649 / $549

iPad Pro 11 Wi-Fi
64GB $799 / $649-675
256GB $949 / $799

The USB-C charger has to support some protocol called Power Delivery for it to do fast charging with Apple products. You’ll see it abbreviated like USB-C PD.

i don’t know. But your Anker PowerStrip may not have supported PD. And that’s why you couldn’t fast charge Apple devices off it?

The Anker PowerStrip is supposed to support USB-C Power Delivery.

I actually hear the double dings when I first plug in the iPad but it completely stops charging after like 5 minutes. Other reviewers have reported the same issue with it completely stopping charging the 2nd gen Pros when using USB-C to Lightning. I've already had it replaced but the issue persists. Works for fast charging the Moto X4 and iPhone XR, though and I like the spacing on the regular sockets for the power bricks for my external HDD so I just kept it instead of returning for refund.

Air 3, mini 5, iPad 7th Gen, and all iPad pros except 9.7” support USB C PD fast charging. This simply means these support multi voltage charging. 5 and 9 volts on iPhones and iPads.

Fyi, your Anker charger (PD port) also supports 2 higher voltages, 15 and 20v, which would only come into play on larger devices like laptops.

Other iPads, do NOT Support PD fast charging. This simply means they will charge at 5 volts only.

However, on a non PD iPad, you will quite possibly observe measurably faster charging when plugged in with usb C to the port labeled PD, compared to the 12 watt charger that came with your iPad. Because, on your Anker, that PD port is rated at 3 amps at 5 volts (=15 watts).

The other 4 (USB A) ports on your Anker, are rated at 2.4 amps at 5 volts (=12 watts). This is identical to the 12 watt Apple charger that came with your iPad.

Edit: I believe 7th gen iPad does support PD fast charging, and edited original post to reflect this.

I agree, when I was ipad shopping last year, I end up with the 6th gen because it was that or the pro at the time. I couldn’t justify the pricing of the pro and ended up with the base model. I’m mostly satisfied but had the air been an option at the time? I would have definitely gone for that.

Got my kids the iPad Air for Christmas this year as the price difference between the 128gb 7th gen and 64gb air was less than $100. It just made sense to go with the air, they won’t need 128gb but I was worried 32gb would be too tight. 64gb is a nice sweet spot for me, all i ever use on my phones and they currently get by on 16gb tablets but barely lol

Ugh, 16GB. Apple really should've moved to 32GB base by the time OG Air / iOS 7 rolled out considering iOS takes up ~4GB not including "Others".

Went with a different choice for my dad (32GB LTE iPad 7, $380). He wouldn't notice a performance difference going to iPad 7 or Air 3 coming from his iPad 5 but I know he'll appreciate having built-in LTE especially on their upcoming overseas trip.

Do you have a reference for where you got that info or do you just remembering hearing that stuff somewhere and are doing it from memory?

Just finished first part of the test.

Drained the iPad 7 battery down to zero, then charged it for an hour on the USB-C lightning cable. It only got up to 28%.

I’ll do the test on the regular USB lightning cable tomorrow.

Well, this article says if I upgrade to an iPad Air 3, I will get a LOT faster charging using fast charge:

”In terms of power consumption, the battery capacity of the iPad Air3 is 30.2Wh, the charge is charged to 36% for half an hour, and it is charged to 68% for one hour.”

https://www.inviolabs.com/blogs/new...rger-is-needed-ipad-air3-mini-5-charging-test

But, always trying to be aware of bias. That company is selling products designed for charging. They very well could be amping up the results to make their products look more important.

And while I’m pretty sure about my charger, I may have the wrong cable to do fast charge with... I’m gonna go review that cable again.

The below iPads support fast charging up to 29/30W for sure:

iPad Pro 12.9 1st Gen
iPad Pro 2nd Gen
iPad Pro 3rd Gen

I am not sure about non Pro iPads.

Also, these iPads support fast charging from 0 to 80%(+), not just till 50% like with iPhones.

I was able to charge my iPad Pro 10.5 from 0 to 100% in under 2 hrs. With the same fast charger my iPhone X used to take longer.

There’s a good chance the Air 3/Mini 5 support PD charging, but I’m not sure. No idea about the iPad 7.
