The iPad Air is already $499 at most third-party retailers here in the US.
The problem is, the iPad 10 is also on sale at $249, literally half the iPad Air.
So… no, they should not.
$250 is low enough that some people might consider an actual iPad over the really really cheap adware tablets that go for absolutely nothing. $250 is still quite a bit more pricey than the crap tablets, but it’s low enough that the upsell for quite a bit more quality is there.
The same cannot be said if you take that price and double it without anything to fill that low-end slot.
Apple does not care about third party retail sellers… The iPad started at $499 for years and was fine.

Apple does not care about third party retail sellers…
They absolutely do.
Ridiculous notion that they don’t.
Most iPhones are purchased through third-party carriers, would not be shocked if the same was true about Apple Watches.
iPads, especially the lowest end ones, are also usually offered through carriers with deals and bundles, not to mention pretty much perpetually being on sale through Amazon and Best Buy.

I was talking about the iPad, not the iPhone. And to be more clear on my point, Apple doesn’t care what third party sellers price items at.

Apple absolutely does, especially from their own certified retailers like BestBuy or Amazon.
Do you honestly think that Best Buy and Amazon set their own prices? Of course not, that’s why all the deals are usually so aligned just right.
Same goes for Walmart, Apple is literally producing new inventory of the old M1 MacBook Air * Specifically* for Walmart to carry it at that $650 price point.
Same for the iPad ninth generation, which is still being sold new in several places, despite being discontinued over two years ago.

Let me make my point even more clear. If Apple wants to lower the price on a product, they are going to do so. They don’t care if retailers like it or not.

Probably a March or April release. There might be an Apple event considering iPhone SE also launching in the similar time period. Hope the bright colors are retained.
