This is a good point. But of course the online (web) version won't have the features or easy accessibility as the App. What would concern me most is privacy, control, and storage space where your data is stored in their cloud vs. on your own device. But for sure the online version is a viable free option for many.

I personally to be honest do not wonder about storage. Microsoft storage (OneDrive) is secured. Otherwise most companies and corporations would not use it. Any big enough corporation conducts their own security audit for every tool they use. I know that my company does it (granted we are also into IT). If we had concerns with OneDrive and we would not use it for our business.

What people should know about though is that the online versions of the apps do not offer all functionality. Some options that we are used to in the desktop version are missing from the online version. So

Yes you're right and as mentioned above, if your wife has a 365 subscription I believe that's why and you can also be added. Office is really now called 365, which includes Excel, Word, Powepoint, etc.
Just added myself via the family sharing option and, hey presto, I can now edit on the iPad. Excellent.

Thanks for the replies and advice.

Got the new iPad Air (lovely device) and transferred over from my new one this morning but trying to edit spreadsheets and word docs it says I need a subscription even though it doesn’t on my iPhone and literally was fine on my old iPad earlier.

Anyone experienced this? View attachment 1709657

Just use the Apple Pages app to edit the document and then you can put it back to word doc format too:

Also actually I find that the ios built-in Notes app is really underrated as a writing tool. I increasingly find myself using that to write and store content, even on my Mac laptop. It's like Evernote on steroids with a good dose of Word too. Once you've created and formated your document in it, you can mail the document out as formated PDF doc or share it with anyone as view only or editable:

So depending on what you are doing, I think for many people may not really need MS Word on the Ipad - and not on the Mac either. The free built in tools are really good and you already paid for them.

Microsoft sets Bing as the default search engine though.

Safari users also experience this redirect. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251249554
The most detailed description of (unwanted) Bing redirect is here https://macsecurity.net/view/226-bing-redirect-virus-mac. What it fails to mention is that you rather need to reset home-page and search URL; cleaning history, caches and fixing other settings are important steps, but they are useless unless you get rid of Bing as your home-page and search default.
These are the screens, they show basically how to get rid of any unwanted website imposed on you as your search and home-page (I run Japanese version of Safari):
So, first I go to Safari Preferences, and then check Search and Home Page settings.

and then check Search and Home Page settings.
