been using my MBP for 2 days now, had been waiting for it for almost 2 months.
It is my first laptop with a Touch Bar,... yes about that Touch Bar... not a big fan but I can live with the gizmo, don't need it, don't like it and if I could get a MBP with ARM without I would.

But this thread is not about the stupid Touch Bar...

my brand new, 2 day old laptop, making a PING noise as I am closing the lid. It was not doing it yesterday, it developed it today... it only does as I am closing the lid, when it is almost totally closed like a clam, a hear a springy PING.

I tracked it down to one of the springs being the culprit...

Overly annoyed with this now, every time I close the lid: PING

it is probably a $20 dollar spring (if that much)... but knowing myself, I will not be able to live with it.. I did not pay $2600 CAD to hear a ping every time I am closing the lid...

I will be returning it and most likely just wait out for the 14" model...other than that, the M1 is a really good machine performance wise I am happy with it, can't wait to see what is in the store for the future of ARM.... no doubt it is the future...
There is anything I can do to this machine to get the fan to run, it is very quiet.

EXCEPT FOR THE GODDAM PING WHEN I SHUT THE LID!!!

Oh. I took mine back today. Same setup as yours. But, I went through the PowerPC to Intel transition. I am willing to wait for this transition to be over.

Honestly, I’ve had a ton of MacBook Pro machines over the last twenty years and this one is the first that I returned with no remorse.

And, I hope you never have to erase and reinstall Big Sur. I tried and it failed five different times. I finally just decided to return it as is.

My old rMBP did that from brand new and over nearly 9 years did it every single time until I recycled it. I even attempted lubricating it.

My brain began to cancel it out as white noise after a while.

Yeah not willing to put up with that. These companies get away with stuff like that unless the customers bring it up.

They offered me to replace the screen, my response:
Do you want me to pay full price for a refurbished computer?

nah thanks, they can have it back and I will have all my money back.

Have no intentions to do that, will create a new account and erase the first one, and ship back.

I did not. I actually went through the process with an Apple support specialist. Oh well, that’s someone else’s headache now.

Yeah. I bought it on holiday in Japan and didn't use it enough to notice until I returned to Germany. The JPY went down compared to the EUR about 40% the month prior worked out to about 680 EUR all in (didn't pay JPN or GER tax anyway!)

So, I was OK with it and bought it from a retailer (Yodobashi camera in Yokohama.)

I could have returned it if I really want to but didn't feel the need to deal with it.

In your position, I would simply return the machine, get the money back and purchase another.

Not the end of the world by any means.

FWIW: If Apple replaces a screen on a MBP, they replace the entire lid of the computer with a brand new one, no refurbished parts involved.

I've never had any MBP with a noise in one of the hinges (and I've had hunderds of them through my hands over the years). I'm sure if you get a new one it'll be OK.

"I did not pay $2600 CAD"

Why did you pay 2600 CAD? My same spec Pro was $2300 after HST.

$2300 plus apple care. maybe unfair to include the cost of apple care in my rant?

It was actually 1 month and 1 week I waited, it felt like 2 months because I needed a computer.

I just got off the phone with apple and it is being returned next Saturday, to be completely honest, so I don't have to ship it and wait for a refund, I will do it in person.
I am more excited about returning this than actually using it. PING.

I guess I expect too much out of a laptop? I just don't feel this laptop warrants the price tag it carries... I will wait a bit, wait for the bugs to be ironed out and a better Touch Bar maybe and all else... we will see.

Personally I'd take it to Apple and see what they say. I'd let them fix it. It may just need the spring aligning properly.
I had a badly creaking screen on my rMBP when new. They changed the whole lid and it was fine after.
A few months later I had the graphics chip problem and they changed the logic board.
I'm typing on it now, 8 years later.
Your money, your choice :)

Since it's clear it's a mechanical issue with the case, why not just get it exchanged?

Sounds like buyers remorse in the mix.
Nah sorry mate, I do not get buyers remorse for $2k at this stage of my life.

not at all, I spent way more money on other toys recently, I don't get remorse over $2000 lol... I will most likely be spending more in the next model too, as I am sure it will be more expensive... Zero buyers remorse here.

I am truly disappointed because the Touch Bar is annoying (first time using one)...

It is kind of a turn off for me if it isn't perfect off the gate, I feel this product has nothing to offer than my late 2013 MBP could not handle besides less noise or no fan noise. I can still do lots of things on the older one.

Also recently sold a Mac Pro (late 2009) which impressed me up until they forced METAL cards to upgrade the OS, then apple shut off any soft updates for those too, a computer that is still very capable today --somewhat limited--

So in a nutshell, not buyers remorse, just expected too much of an entry level laptop at a premium price? Mayyyybe?

Also, just decided to poke my head into the M1 problems thread...yikes...it does not look good.

Mostly, just greatly dissapointed and the only remorse I would have is not retuning it, if I didn't.

because these seem to be plagued with issues? I will continue reading the M1 problems thread and see how it evolves but does not look good.

Because the Touch Bar is a horrible gimmick?

Because from experience when a product is botched on release, it will most likely continue to be throughout its life, specially on the 1st gen.

Just personal opinion, your mileage might vary.

interesting. that's sounds nothing like and did mine or anything like friction.

it literally sounds like magnets moving slightly within the aluminium frame. is there anything magnetised around?

personally, I wouldn't care but that's me and I have better things to do than worry about tiny sounds (welcome to England.)

sounds like you're not really the person who would gain from an M1 (travels a lot with working.)

Exactly my sentiment. Actually, my only remorse is that now, having given my mid-2020 mbp13 to my daughter for school, I’m left without a personal laptop. I use a mbp 16” for work, but am not really looking forward to travel with that one.

Hopefully most of the kinks get ironed out by mid 2021. I’ll need to make a decision at that point and maybe I’ll just be able to pick up the mythical 14”.

yeah, no reason for the MBP over the MBA with these M1 release. The TB has been around a while and I still don't see any convincing use.

if you think the m1 machines are "botched," I don't think you deal with electronics often.

but, I don't mind and am very happy with the machine on the whole. it's the best laptop I've touched in the last 5 years and I see a ton of machines.
