interesting. that's sounds nothing like and did mine or anything like friction.

it literally sounds like magnets moving slightly within the aluminium frame. is there anything magnetised around?

personally, I wouldn't care but that's me and I have better things to do than worry about tiny sounds (welcome to England.)

sounds like you're not really the person who would gain from an M1 (travels a lot with working.)
I hear ya... I will waste time next Saturday AND I will have to use my old computers... 2 things I did not really want to do.

I guess I am just keeping Apple on their toes? haha they don't care about me.
But I have been a business owner and I think that, users or fans that continue putting up with glitches and mediocrity for the sake of the brand (fanboy-ism) only hurt the future of the brand, the same way a customer not bringing up an issue to a Manager and holding a grudge instead and therefore never returning to the store.

I prefer to do this today, it might help the brand in the future. Maybe?

This little MBP is leaps ahead of any windows laptop and my 2013, unfortunately, I do not want to use this unit for 7 years... I know Apple can do better, I will wait for that.
I just can foresee how annoyed I will be if this happens again and what is my excuse to bring it back to the apple store after 1 year of use?
I am well off but forking out $100 for a PLINK to cover apple care replacement ---worst case scenario--- isn't enticing at the moment. I have little patience for stuff like this, I pay money for apple because they use to make PERFECT things...
Don't see that anymore...or lately I should say.

I have worked on PowerPC workstations with really old school high speed raid units that were rendering video for TV, just to put things in perspective... I have seen a few of these Macs... I will wait.

Exactly my sentiment. Actually, my only remorse is that now, having given my mid-2020 mbp13 to my daughter for school, I’m left without a personal laptop. I use a mbp 16” for work, but am not really looking forward to travel with that one.

Hopefully most of the kinks get ironed out by mid 2021. I’ll need to make a decision at that point and maybe I’ll just be able to pick up the mythical 14”.
That makes two of us. I am looking forward to it.

I used to act exactly like you and then I left Germany (and German-speaking countries) and realised that the rest of the world can't maintain the same standard. Japan is close.

English-speaking lands are more fun but you deal with stuff like this.

Also, it's a simple manufacturing error and while you can blame Apple, I don't use their devices due to manufacturing. I use them because as a tool I can get more done with them than any other brand in the same price range.

If I bought my machine a local shop, I'd just return it. I probably wouldn't if it burned part of a weekend and/or I had to mail it in.

I've been involved in several start-ups and while fun, the "making money to survive" but isn't so fun. Academia is much more fun and free. Maybe I've chilled out now.

Yeah, I strongly agree. I loved Jobs' Apple so much, but modern macs and macOS are rubbish. It annoys me no end to see so many people continuously jumping throuhg hoops (after paying a fortune for new hardware), instead of going back to Mojave and working/tested hardware.... But the problem is accentuated by the lack of alternatives. Windows and Linux are almost just as bad.

This is a very good argument.

I think the MacBook series and macOS are excellent for light-duty academic-based workloads.

I think that as the price point continues to drop (I mean an m1mba for under £900 is stellar) that market will continue to expand.

The only real alternatives are Windows machines, which aren't convincing at all but might be less expensive.

because these seem to be plagued with issues? I will continue reading the M1 problems thread and see how it evolves but does not look good.

Because the Touch Bar is a horrible gimmick?

Because from experience when a product is botched on release, it will most likely continue to be throughout its life, specially on the 1st gen.

Just personal opinion, your mileage might vary.
I’ve had no issues at all with the M1 MacBook Air. The “issues” thread is typical of any new OS update. Most of them are software issues that will be resolved within a few months.

I thought this post had to be a joke at first because it made me laugh so much. I've never heard of laptops pinging before but I think this is a case for the Genius Bar. I bet they could solve this!

ok so here is my update to this thread. The M1 MBP has returned to Apple, I had made peace ☮️ during the last few days with most issues I had, all of them personal I guess: the Touch Bar and the hinges making sounds when closing the lid... All 1st world problems.

I talked to the person who took my MBP and mentioned the POING or PING or whatever sound that was... And he was aware of it, he said he had it in one of his computers to, that it was not unique to that one and it is something with the hinge mechanism on these MBPs....

Fast forward to this afternoon....Today I purchased a MBP I found in the used market. It is an Intel MBP, only 8GB of memory and 512 SSD... I paid exactly 50% less for this (not a bad deal I guess?), it is 2020 model too... so oh, well... this is it I guess, gonna run this Intel I5 for a few months until the 14" MBP comes out, hopefully they add 4 USB ports to that one as that is what I am after without getting into a 16"

Something I noticed right away:

My fingers are, let's say...toasty right now, I can feel a steamy and constant warmth coming through the keyboard as I type this. These computers certainly DO NOT run cool as a M1, not even close to cool... and I only have Safari open at the moment.
I miss the cool operation of the M1 that is for sure!

All that to say, this will tie me over until I get what I want.

Cheers!

Your closing it wrong ;) but seriously take it back for an exchange. As far as I'm concerned it should be perfect out of the box, after all this is a premium product.

haha, yup maybe.
Well, yes, I guess you did not read the whole rant, that is ok... but I returned it.

with that said:
  • would you guys get Apple Care for a laptop? more specifically,
  • should I get Apple Care for this 13" Intel MBP i5 considering I will be selling it in the next 6-10 months?
  • Does it add any resale value? never had to sell a laptop before so not sure how that market feels about having Apple care or if people are willing to pay more for that.

I find apple care only adds a little value, but makes it more attractive to perspective buyers.

If you are going to sell it in 6 months I would skip getting AppleCare. You won’t recover your costs when you sell it. It might sell a little quicker, but that’s all. Extended warranties make money for the companies who sell them, so by the law of averages you lose money on them as a whole, but if you plan to keep a Mac for the entire 3 years, then the peace of mind might be worth the cost.

yeah I hear you there, it makes sense... I will most likely sell it as soon as the 14" MacBook Pro comes out.
Arm is the way to the future!
Buy RISC V stock!

Just curious why not give M1 MBA a try?
I did, the chip is great. Battery life is stupid good.
I dont like the current form factor enough to be stuck with it for a long time just for the novelty of a chip.

just waiting for the redesigned mbp now and and hopefully all video and other minor bugs will be ironed out by then too!

Not enough arm support just yet, it isnt refined. But it will be there soon.

i am willing to put up with glitches If I love the machine:
It needs a better touch bar
It needs 4 usb C ports

once it gets there, I’ll buy it.

in the meantime I’ll keep running the mbp 2020 I bought today for 50% of the price of the M1

I look at it as a type of insurance, not a value-enhancing add-on. Because most failures of these closed machines cost a considerable portion of the original expense, it's almost like having to replace.

As insurance, my approach is: if it fails, will it be really painful for me to replace (i.e. can I afford to just buy a new one instead)? Is that peace of mind worth it?

Applecare is expensive enough for me to keep the savings, and this approach hasn't let me down yet. I have acquaintances who find it worthwhile for peace of mind, they worry a lot more than me.

(Mind, I have different computers and solutions if any one computer is out of commission. That doesn't work for everyone.)
