That M1 surely has more life in it. If you got an M1 in the forst place… and targeting an Air as an update. Youre hardly using a heavy workflow.

If its the RAM thats the issue… well you probably didnt spec it correctly when you bought it.

Tut tut
True on all counts. Base model. Will spec out the new one.

Thanks Mr. Gurman, but since I haven’t even unboxed the damn thing yet, think I’ll prob hold onto my current M2 MBA for a bit longer, despite the M3 rumor 😂

They should, but they won't. Maybe next year. The pro having 8gb is confirmation enough.
Nope. They hadn't done that in literally a decade. What's one more year to them when they can charge $200 for 8 GB more?

No surprise Mac sales crashed after moving off intel. Lots of busines had lots of software invested in windows. My company did.
They crashed because everyone bought new stuff when the pandemic hit — mostly before Apple silicon was out. Most of the tech companies have been afflicted by a slump in sales. But Apple also had a supply disruption. That caused a backlog in orders that ballooned one of their quarters, making a subsequent comparison jarring.

Wonderful. Don't just tell us you know more, show us. Elaborate on the anodized seal process. Apple said they had a breakthrough on it. Detail for us why it's more expensive. And I still insist Apple should address the issue on the next revision. To reiterate it would be foolish of them not to. My interpretation of them not bringing it to the lower end 14" MacBook Pro was more of a marketing play than a cost issue.

After anodizing they laser engrave the entire surface to make light bounce off it unevenly. Giving you the perception it is less fingerprint prone. Extra steps= extra cost. There is no way around that. That said, I’m sure Apple could absorb it without a thought. Apple however never gives anything away for free. I do agree that Apple does this to encourage folks who like a specific color to pay more for it. I bought a m3 max and I personally hate the color. Almost as much as the silver. I wish I could have ordered one in grey.

Current Machine: MBA 2018 with 16GB RAM

I waited for the M2 redesign hoping for a bigger jump in screen res/brightness. Based on this, I think I'm going to leapfrog to the MBP lineup and just upgrade the RAM.

Yeah that's what I was thinking: Apple could absorb it without batting an eyelash. And since aside from them putting the single NAND SSD in the base model, that critique is overshadowed by the look of the midnight version after fingerprints. Personally the midnight fingerprints issue seems slightly overblown but it who am I to say? I've only seen it in the store. I haven't seen space black in person yet — although I've got a good idea what it would look like when I had my iPhone 14 Pro in space black. Silver seems the most durable with respect to dings & scratches & is my bias (I'd cringe when someone would say the paint would scratch since the aluminum is NOT painted). I wonder why Apple ditched space grey on the top end pro line? Too many SKUs?

I too am rocking a late 2018 MBA dual core i5. I'm holding out for native dual external monitor support. I can't invest in a new machine that has limitations my 6 year old device has.

I think you can still return it upto Jan 8th. Holiday return policy in effect.

Absolutely. Apple charging top tier prices while at the same time cutting corners to save spare change. Space black looks black from an angle, yet gray when you’re looking at it head on. Yeah the silver appears more durable, only because the scratches or base material match the anodizing. I personally find it very outdated looking. There’s certainly far too many sku’s of grey/black. I have a feeling midnight black is gone and they’ll offer space black only on higher tier models. It’s a curious thing leaving grey as an option only on base tiers though.

Given that some of the units had Ventura pre-installed on them they might not have finalized space black yet when they ran them in production? Who knows. You think the midnight finish is replaced by Space Black when Apple updates the Air to M3? Wow. I think I prefer the midnight finish more than the space black finish.

If Apple were smart, they would upgrade the M3 base model of all their lineup with at least 12GB RAM, as a Mac with M3 chip and 8GB is pitiful performance when you have any other apps open such as multiple web browser windows in the background. For validation of this 8GB RAM performance limitation, see:

Not everybody needs more than 8GB of RAM. And in fact, I'd argue that most casual users are just fine with that amount. Most people who truly need more are going to be looking to buy more than 12GB anyway.

Very true. I have a single Ultrawide so I can live without that feature, but that is a farcical limitation in 2023.

The MBP M3 w/16GB+512GB is $300 more than the equivalent MBA, and still doesn't have dual monitor capability.

I debate this point with myself. "You don't know what you don't know." Most people are oblivious. They accept the performance of 8GB of RAM because they don't know that performance could be better with 16GB.

I do think they were rushed and dropped last minute. The fact that Gurman and everyone else speculated there’d be no new machines this year then Qualcomm announced upcoming ARM chips that “smash” M2. Apple must have felt the need to show their hand. Yeah I think Space black will replace midnight black, albeit only on higher tier models. There won’t be a black entry level model. I personally don’t like the midnight black because of the aforementioned fingerprints as well as the odd blue hue they have. But my mother in law loves hers so what do I know lol.

Oh yeah I know, but no buyer's remorse here at all. I just thought it was funny this article came out the day after I picked up my new M2 MBA. There is always new hardware on the horizon, so you can never keep up if you keep waiting. But my late 2016 15" MBP was def due for an update and couldn't even be upgraded beyond macOS 12 Monterey anyway, so it was def time to pull the trigger.

Max Tech are my go to source for Apple and Mac information and reviews. They do it better than anyone else I have found on YouTube. They seem very dedicated to providing informative reviews with actual tests and stats that I appreciate seeing. If you really think that 8GB RAM is enough for having multiple apps open and running, including multiple web browser windows open, than I guess I won't try to convince you otherwise. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. Max Tech (the Yuryev brothers) are very helpful. And Vadim Yuryev is super responsive on Twitter/X if you have any questions at: https://twitter.com/VadimYuryev
Hey everyone....I think we've found "Max" at Max Tech. :)

It has a "blue hue" because it's designed to be in the Midnight Blue color range...not black.

Boring. Other than speed bumps, I see no new innovation or features in recent Macs.
