That depends entirely on what you're planning to use it for.

It will be used mainly as a media server. The only encoding I would be doing is converting mkv files to mp4.

I also use Bittorrent frequently.

Other than that, I just use iLife/iTunes and browse.

I plan on replacing the HDD with an SSD. So if I get the the $799 one the only benefit will be the processor bump. Do you guys think it is worth it over the low end model? I will max out the memory regardless and I have a separate gaming pc.
Now that the official RAM maximum is 16GB, is the real maximum 32GB?

The new Minis are clearly better. You overrate the separate GPU. The quad core will more than compensate...unless you plan to game.

NO. they are NOT better. the GPU is slower then the 330M in my Macbook Pro from 2010. 2010 for ****s sake!

also, I'm not a gamer ;)

so yeah seems like I'm pretty much bound to go back to PC, I've also lost hope that there will ever be a new Mac Pro.

but isn't it a shame?

OSX, a beautiful piece of software, excellently suitable for professional use, is running on such crap consumer hardware!

they should Licence OSX to HP, those guys know how to make proper computers.

apple said that a new mac pro would be coming out next year.

Doesn't seem like much of an upgrade since the HD4000 is more or less on par with the 6630M.

that might as well be december 2013. 15 months from now. if it's even true at all. probably not.

compared to say a HP Z820 workstation the mac pro is already way behind

I disagree. I'd much rather have the quad core with max RAM than a dual core with separate GPU and max RAM. I don't game though.

spot on!

I couldn't be more happy, I don't need to buy a server MM just because I want QC CPU ... + 4 USB 3,0 ports (something really new for apple, 2+2 would sound more applish for me) HDMI, FW ... great for my needs, I could sell my late 2009 MM

The 6630 was twice as fast as the HD3000. The HD4000 is 1.6x as fast. So the HD4000 is 20% slower than the Radeon. On PC laptops they score the same, but those Radeons run DDR3 on the main bus. The Radeon Mini has DDR5

I agree. I have a 2011 mini server with integrated Intel 3000 graphics and have never had a problem with anything. I understand that if someone is a professional doing large file photo or video editing they would want a discrete graphics card, but for the average user, the Intel 3000 and 4000 graphics are so far above what integrated graphics used to be (and people are projecting bad experiences from years ago onto today's tech).

As for Hackintosh, that's how I got into Macs. Yes, you can build a custom Hackintosh, but it's not a Mac. For one, they have no resale value, period. They have issues, and if Apple is dropping dedicated desktop graphics cards, good luck updating OS X on your Hackintosh in the future. That's the biggest problem with Hackintoshes, compatibility and updates. Every update can break the OS, meaning hours or days spent trying to regain what you just had. I finally decided I just wanted a real Mac and stopped dealing with the headaches of a Hackintosh.

Agree with the first part, HD 4000 is a big step forward, but disagree with the second part.
Although you are right a Hack is not a real Mac, but they could coexist very good. MacMini + i7 desktop CPU Hackintosh is great combination.

So the new ENTRY level Mac doesn't have EVERYTHING YOU wanted in it...just get the iMac, it's the aimed at people in design that use tools like aperture. If you can't afford it then move to PC, quit ur whining, u knew macs were expensive.

I for one am happy with the upgrade, I bought the new mbp with the HD4000 and it vastly outperformed my old 2009mbp with dedicated GPu.

That said I'll defo be getting a quad core ivy mini cause I don't want it for gaming, and don't do video editing or graphic design, if I did I'd get an iMac.

This isn't about cost for me. Maybe this works for you and that's all fine and good. I don't understand how they could take a step backwards. Surely you can see why people are disappointed.

It is possible, yes. You just need to order a special kit if you're going to install it yourself.

I am hoping this is the right answer but we will have to wait to see a teardown to make sure that the aftermarket 2nd hard drive cable that worked in the 2011 mini is the same as the 2012. If not we may have to wait for OWC or similar to engineer the newer shaped cable. But I personally hope you are right. The easy (more expensive answer) is to start with a server in the first place :)

their target market for the mini is not graphical intense stuff. They know most people will use it for a media server or file server and more than likely a 2nd or 3rd computer for the house.

So what exactly are you doing that makes the video card so much more valuable than the two additional cores in the CPU?

As was just said, the Mini isn't designed as pro level machine. Despite that I'm seriously considering one for graphics and web dev work as it'll be more than adequate for that.

I wanted a discrete GPU though I am glad they gave the mid range model a quad core processor. They also dropped the cost of adding an SSD from $600 to $300.

It is a shame though that it was not added by default on one of them. Ah well, next time.

The problem is that Apple doesn't have a middle of the road option for those who have their own screen and want to play games in some capacity. The old Mini at least gave some Mac gamers options.

That last bit is a joke right?
I dont see the problem with the new mini?
On the base model you get an extra 2gb ram, better processor, usb 3 and better graphics and For me its dropped £30!

Ill be ordering one for xmas :)
I can retire my g4 mac mini then

I have to say, I'm pretty pleased with this update.

The HD4000 has essentially the same performance of the 6630M (maybe about 10% slower)
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

While the 2.5GHz Ivy Bridge is about 10% faster than the 2.5% Sandy Bridge in the 2011 Mid-level mini.
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

As I only game occasionally, I'll take the slight CPU increase over the slight GPU decrease. I originally was torn between the 2011 mac mini 2.3Ghz and the 2.5Ghz + 6630M. By waiting, I essentially got the mid-level mini at the entry level price, plus USB3.0 & saved $200.

What?

Do you make this statement because U actually own one? I got mine Friday and my laptop will be a PC b/c of issues.

Agreed. Since I purposely waited for this particular bump from my 2009 Mini, I am happy despite the lack of discrete graphics. The HD 4000 will still perform better than the NVidia 9400M.

Exactly, My 2009 2.66GHz (7200RPM WD, 8GB RAM) performs very well. Video via EyeTV looks good. Both Photoshop CS 5 and CS 6 move along acceptably. The new 2.6GHz will kill my 2009 with even better graphics performance.

You couldn't have had one last Friday. It just became available TODAY!

OK, I'll just step back a minute and ask; Is the 2012 entry level Mini better than the 2011 entry level Mini for the same price? More memory, faster CPU, improved on board GPU, USB3 are all pluses? Same old 5400 500gig HHD, (I didn't see any upgrade path for HDD or SSD on the Apple sight?) no discrete GPU (I guess that doesn't matter on the entry level)on any model?
I want to get back into Mac and was considering the midrange if it had a discreet GPU. Looks like I'm going entry level.
