New Mac Mini is out. Is (almost) everyone happy now?

At least they have Finally updated the darn thing!

So, here's what it can do

- Up to 6-Core. 4-core as minimal configuration.
- Up to 64GB of Ram that you can upgrade yourself if you buy the base 8GB model. Not soldered to the Logicboard by Apple!
- 2TB SSD
- 4 Thunderbolt ports and 10Gb Ethernet

However. USD 799 is quite a steep starting price considering in the past they would start between 500 - 650

EDIT: I was a bit too quick. I like it, and I am glad I have an upgrade path now, but I'll keep my 2014 for now. Plus I'd have to buy space grey accessories lol.

$799 is fine as a starting price, but to only get a soldered / non-upgradable i3 is disappointing for sure. Otherwise, this refresh got a lot of things right.

Just get the i7 and forget about the i3. Even if it's a quadcore i3. Has the makings of a little monster though I must say and using the TB3 ports to drive an external beefier video card you could have even more power.

Definitely curious what the price of hex-core i7 and 256 GB SSD is. I was hoping to see both these things at $1,099, as well as dGPU which didn't happen (eGPU is doable, but drives the cost up by several hundred).

I got the midrange mini in 2014. I don’t like the starting price.

I am excited about the iPad Pro. (Currently have 10.5 256). Watching the event, hoping the Face ID doesn’t over price it.

Yes, I am. Exactly what i expected, with no unpleasant surprises, and two pleasant surprises.

First, desktop CPU. That thing is gonna be a little more power hungry, and also will heat up much more. That's why am I gonna wait a little, to see how thermals hold up. Second, user upgradeable RAM. Nice thing, so unlike 2018 Apple.

So $799 is not a bad starting price.
Performance wise it's comparabl to the fastest quad core 2012 macmini:

I'm probably the only one here disappointed that the base model no longer uses a 2.5" hard drive, and my guess is there's no longer a slot in it for a 2.5" drive. I've owned a few different Mac Minis, including the 2014 base model. First thing I always do is install my own 2.5" SSD, and in the 2012 version I keep the original hard drive and install a 2.5" SSD for a dual drive setup which is the most ideal. And I don't really care for having the fastest PCIe SSD's, which makes no difference compared to a 2.5" SATA3 drive in normal use.

If it turns out there is a slot for a 2.5" drive, then yes I'll be happy.

The pricing is insane. I’m sorry. Bog standard i5 with 8GB RAM for $1100 + tax. Insane. That’s over $1200 for me in Seattle.

True, performance is comparable to the mobile i5-8259U I was hoping for at that price point. Still would've been nice to see the switch to desktop processors mean hex-core as standard.

The early Intel Mac minis did have upgradable CPUs. The Core Duo Mac mini is much more useful when upgraded with a (now inexpensive) Core 2 Duo CPU.

I was also hoping for and preferring a mobile quadcore (i5-8259u), which has better performance and better iGPU (iris plus 655 with 128 eDRAM):
