I have the 2010 server. It is stock right now and I'm able to do basic edits in prores422 hq 1080p, export to 1080p and watch the video without any issue. I'm using final cut studio. I'm not sure an ssd or hybrid are needed. I'm saving that upgrade and a memory upgrade for later. I do have two external drives attached to it. One for time machine backups and another for long term storage of data. The second internal drive is the working drive for FCS.

New Mac Mini mid-2010 fast enough?

Morning, Afternoon or Good Evening everyone,

Well I pulled the trigger and bought the following for $295.00 (including S/H):

Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive

and

KomputerBay 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 SODIMM 204PIN 1333Mhz PC3 10600 Memory

The problem I'm having now is I can't see anything on my monitor. I hear the HD spinning. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I also used Super Duper to transfer my old 120GB HD to a LaCie external HD for a bootable HD. I still have the old HD with all it's original apps.

Do I need a USB keyboard and mouse to activate my new HD?

I'm stuck any advise would help.

Thanks in advance for any in put...

New Mac Mini mid-2010 fast enough?

I found my error:

Komputerbay 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 SODIMM 204 pin 1333Mhz PC3 10600

Komputerbay 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 SODIMM 204 pin 1066Mhz PC3 8500

I ordered the wrong Memory. DUH

Anyways, I took out the new memory 1333Mhz and installed the old memory 1066Mhz. Bingo it works, the wireless keyboard & mouse.

So now I'm waiting for response from KomputerBay. I need to exchange my original order of 1333Mhz to the 1066Mhz. Crossing Fingers

If anyone has 2 cents add it...

I decided to go with the standard mac mini and give the Momentus XT a chance.

I think to buy a mac mini server and put an ssd in there + an external dvd drive is quite a bit of an investment....not sure if the speed boost over the Momentus XT is worth it...

Congrats! Let us know how you are liking it.

Did you get the PM I sent you late yesterday?

Ok I will do that for sure. I have the mini here with me now but I'm still waiting for the Momentus....

Nope, I didn't receive any PM lately....

Just one more question:

If I would install let's say a Crucial C300 ssd in my mac mini and use a FW800 external hard drive for storage, what would the performance of the external drive be like compared to a standard internal hard drive?

SSD drives are still to expensive (for my pocket).
Also since OSX still does not support TRIM command for SSD's, they are a bad choice to use with OSX at least for until the TRIM supports comes...

I just upgraded my MAcbook Pro with two times Hitachi 7k500 drives. Very very fast!! Much faster than old 320 GB 7200 rpm that was inside before. Very very fast now!!!

I have heard more than once that the Crucial C300 is great for about 2-3 months depending on usage, but after that it degrades rapidly to being very slow.

That's why I decided to get the OWC in the end. I don't know what choices you have over there so perhaps the OWC is not so easy to get.

I'd be interested in what people have to say about this as well. Any chance a 7200rpm 2.5" drive hooked up via FW800 could outclass the stock internal 5400rpm drive? A 2.5" external would be ideal from a cable clutter + noise perspective. I'll try and rustle up some benchmarks in the meantime.

(Incidentally, Newegg's got some SSDs on sale at the moment. 64GB Kingston V-series for $99 and 128GB Western Digital Blue for $199.)

I was considering a full SSD option as well but I don't like the idea of having most of my data on external drives. so I'll try the hybrid drive first where I should get a performance boost and decent internal storage at the same time.

I thought about the SSD route, but then the cost compared to what you get GB wise, I watched the second video here and it is a minor bit behind the SSD performance for a Hybrid Drive, and not one bit unhappy either.

You will enjoy it besides the fact you can get a few for the cost of a single SSD.

OWC-brand SSD drives do not require trim to keep working at their peak. That's why they are such a good match for Macs. Plus the controller is faster than most.

Hey, did you notice OWC has a August only deal on 40GB SSD for $99? Sure there are others out there for the same price, but right now OWC seems the way to go for me. I am trying one as a boot drive with OSX and Applications mostly. It took 29GB for what I've done so far.:D

The SSD will start/close Windows and programs fast, but if your files are on a HDD, it will take regular HDD time to open those.

Wow, did I really spend $300+ on my SSD :( Once I get my voice recognition running, hopefully I'll be impressed. At least I saved 1/3 as a business write-off, which I don't see mentioned too often around here.

Most of the files I work with daily are on the SSD-i.e., Pages and Numbers stuff as well as bookmarks, email etc. Time will tell if that was the way to go.:)
