Monitor, keyboard, and mouse, anyone?

That wouldn't make that big a difference to a lot of people. I think that lot of people just care about the specs. Many would prefer to get cheaper displays keyboards and mice.

4 3gHz processors
6 drive bays for SATA
64Gb Ram
two optical drives
in a smaller box.

$100.

I'm about as realistic as most of you guys.

Haha!

I was gonna do the same thing lol! (only better :p)

octo core 3.2 ghz
64 gb ram
1 tb hard drive (4 expansion bays)
everything else the Macpro has.

$99 :p

Sorry to reanimate this, but no firewire = imperfect.

meh, screw firewire. external drives should be used for storage only. if your streaming massive amounts data off of it that requires such a high speed then you might as well kill yourself. I've never owned a firewire device in my life. tbh, i wish my macbook didn't have firewire, i don't use it.

Quads today and the Apple Gaping Lineup Hole (AGLH)

Considering every Mac has a dual-core CPU, I'd say dual core is today's technology. I know technology moves fast, but come on.

Exactly. My trusty old Power Mac is a dual CPU and this Spring it will be four years old.

I'm probably pushing things a bit, for lower level Macs, but quads are definitely here. My last check at Newegg revealed they are selling six core2 duos and six core2 quads. (This is not considering xeons or extreme editions.)

Also, currently there is a big gap between the Mini/iMac and the Mac Pros. This is commonly referred to as the Apple Gaping Lineup Hole. Sometimes called by its acronym, the AGLH.

In another year or two maybe we'll be saying goodbye to quads.

This is what I would like, this is not what Apple are going to give me. A new case with room for 2 Hard Drives

This could be the higher end spec

2.8Ghz Quad Core
4Gb Ram (Expandable to 8)
DVD Dual Layer, Blu-Ray (Optional Upgrade)
500Gb Hard Drive
Mid to High End GFX Card

It will more likely be a similar spec to the MacBook's

made this a wile back

Had it on my own thread. Not so sure this is where its going but hey who knows

You sir just want the infamous "headless iMac", which of course, doesn't exist, probably never will.

There is a little light at the end of the USB tunnel. Not yet sure if it's a train!

The new USB spec provides a bit more bus power than the current spec. That's a welcome change but I agree with you about FW. It's a superior technology in every way and if it goes away it will missed. The fact is it costs OEM's less money to incorporate USB than FW.

I wonder if the new USB spec has the same old USB achilles heel in regards to an entire bus segment being dragged down to the lowest device speed? Anyone have info on this?

i7 isn't fast enough. Try Intel Teraflop, 3.2GHz 80-core, two of those and runescape could barely run at low def. :D

Pretty much what I want too. Remember the saying, "If you built it they will come." We are already here but they still aren't building it.

Ugh... I hate hypothetical threads because they're not based in fact. If I wanted to create an Über-xMac, I would, but, as it stands...

Why does a desktop need a unibody?! It's already made of one solid piece of aluminum. No Core i7. No Nehalem in the Mac Mini until 2010. And no discreet graphics. We've already seen that the next Mac Mini will use the 9400M.

Now that reality has come crashing down on everyone's head, I'd like to propose MY perfect xMac.

Wait... how do I want to do this... I'll do what I think WILL happen, and then I'll do what everyone wants.

2.0, 2.4 (same chips as the MacBook)
2GB DDR3 standard, expandable to 6GB (4GB from Apple)
SuperDrive
9400M
160GB HDD, 250GB and 256 SSD as BTO

And then insanity:
2.66, 2.93 (Core i7. They're quad-core)
2GB DDR3 standard, expandable to 8GB
SuperDrive ("What about Bl-" Shut up. Not even in fantasies.)
GTX 260 or GTX 295
320GB desktop HDD, another 3.5" HDD bay open for up to 3TB
FireWire 400

I have a feeling the specs will be much like the specs of the new MacBooks...

Low:

2.0GHz C2D
2GB DDR3 RAM
160GB HDD
9400M
Mini DisplayPort
HDMI???
SuperDrive
4 x USB 2.0

High:

2.4GHz
2GB DDR3 RAM
250GB HDD
9400M
Mini DisplayPort
HDMI???
SuperDrive
4 x USB 2.0

...with BTO options that consist of a 250GB HDD, 320GB HDD, 128GB SSD, and 4GB RAM.

If Apple put a DVI port on the new Minis, NO ONE would use MDP. Why? Because MDP is about 2 years too early and is really worthless right now.

and the extreme edition 3.2GHz Core i7 then it's nice :D

My dream set up for the new (high end) mac mini.

Price: $800
Processor: Dual 2.4 ghz
RAM: 2 gb and upgradeable
Hard drive: 160 gb
VRAM: Nvidia with 256 mb (like macbooks)

If anybody wants to post their own ideal setups, or argue with mine, feel free .

They may include a make the base processor 2.0GHz and the high end one 2.4 but I doubt that it will be dual because that might lead people away from the mac pro because it has a 2.8GHZ 4-Core Processor and the mac mini would be less than a third of the price.
