Lack of HDMI is a non issue, IMO. I just use separate audio and video cables.

I would like to know who makes a simple stereo audio receiver with remote I could use for my HT setup. Everything I can find has five or seven speakers, for which I don't have room, or need.

Two words: licensing fees.

Mini DP and DVI are royalty-free. HDMI is not.

Fine, then why doesn't Apple send the audio out on the Mini DP port? The Mini DP specification WRITTEN BY APPLE provides for audio support via Mini DP, yet Apple doesn't support it on either the Mac Mini, nor the other products that have the Mini DP.

Two words: Short sighted

The mini has two video ports already. This allows the use of dual monitors on the mini for the first time. The addition of an HDMI port would eliminate one of the video ports. They now have the MiniDisplay port on all of their computers and all of their computers will drive two displays. For use as a computer, DVI is the better choice. I already own two min-DVI to DVI adapters and a DVI to HDMI cable. Since my MBP has DVI, I can use the same cable to hook up any of my Macs to the TV.

I prefer the approach that Apple took but I can see the desire to use the mini as an AppleTV replacement and HDMI would make sense.

apple DOES NOT market the mini as an HTPC

whatever thoughts you have about business sense with this are your own, Apple is well known for marketing specific machines for specific purposes and not cannibalizing their own lines, and they see the Apple TV as their HTPC

Right now the HTPC is small business compared to the rest of their lines, and they just aren't invested in it

In time it will be a natural progression to enable audio through the MDP, and who knows, this may be added with Snow Leopard.

Also I would expect that the next iteration of the Apple TV will be 1080p capable and still include a HDMI cable

good times!

(ps I am buying a Mac Mini for use as a HTPC and while a HDMI out or a MDP that transmitted audio would be nice, I'm fine with mdp or mini dvi - hdmi and mini toslink - toslink to my receiver)

so i was going to comment on this thread, but instead please just read his response again.
