Very upset this is the way its gone. I use these many times as servers and this is very disappointing...

Also looks like you cannot upgrade the ram in the machine at all.

I've been holding off on buying a Mac Mini for several months now in anticipation of an update. Now that Apple has dropped the quad-core option, I might not be purchasing one at all.

Evolution of Mac Mini - from Quad Core to Dual Core - REALLY ?

Been waiting for getting new Mac Mini like many over here but looks like Apple blew the whole thing here, There is no option of Quad Core Processor anymore on Mac Mini. This is like rubbing salt into injury. Come on Apple give us something worth buying.

They probably want to better separate the Mac Pro and Mac mini. And this is certainly one way to do it, but the Mac Pro is overkill for GPU for those of us who don't want that power and just want a good CPU.

This would have been my first Mac. :( I have now decided against it.

Dual core, 4GB RAM, old processors (with Broadwell just around the corner), HDD... Lame.

Hopefully they will release a redesigned Mac mini with Broawell in the next 6 months. I can't believe I will be stuck on Windows!!

That's sad. I got a fully kitted out Mini last time, with quad-core i7, 16GB Ram and the Fusion drive. It's still very good - and maybe better than the new ones today?

Do the new Minis let users add RAM like the last ones did? That was fairly handy, too.

There are rumors, persistent one, that there is going to be a Mac Pro Mini

Never heard that, seen it, or dreamed about it.

Link?

(I want it to be true, but I've never heard that, and I check out several Mac sites about 10 times a day)

I don't see why they wouldn't.

Really gutted was prepared to buy a maxed out one to replace my Mac Pro not without quad core, looks like I'm going to have to save really hard for a base Mac Pro :(

It's just the sort of thing I can imagine Apple doing, that's all.

Now that you mention it, there's no mention of user upgradability on the Apple website that I see. It never shows the bottom of the machine. SURELY, it is though. Surely. If not, that's pretty much "worst ever".

A 4-core Ivy Bridge will stomp on a 2-core Haswell.

And it looks like the memory is not upgradable... this from the Apple specs...

8GB of 1600MHz LPDDR3 memory
Configurable to 16GB, only at the Apple Online Store.

I think you're right. Sad news... this new Mac Mini is a dud in all regards. :(

Looks great to me. My 5.5 yr mini is struggling a bit. I've ordered:

2.8GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz)
8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage

I can't believe that the only option to get a quad-core Mac w/out a display is to spend $3,000 on a Mac Pro. Ridiculous.

Regarding the server model being dropped - Is it just me or can you still buy a Mac mini and download the server applications and get the same functionality? To my knowledge people were doing this with the 2012 models because there was no special hardware with the previous server, just Apple charging a mark up the extra hard drive and server apps.

You're right. Apple server is just an App now.

This makes me feel so much better and vindicated about my late July purchase of my mini. Everything that has happened with the mini was what I was projecting. (If we can get solid confirmation about the RAM being soldered)

My 2012 is probably faster than the best 2014 model you can get. :)
