Anyone find out if buying an OEM cable is possible? Still on the phone with the apple store in my city but no luck so far.

Edit: Ok, so a replacement cable is $20 (as noted by someone earlier) but you have to hand over your existing cable in order to get it. Calling AppleCare to see what they can do.

Lou

Why the search for a second cable? Just makes it easier to not have to fish a power cable out from behind my desk at home every day before taking the Mac Pro to work.

Why an Apple one? Why not some off the shelf IEC? Because 1) aesthetics. It's perfectly flush with the case, it's the right shade of black, 2) in the event of any warranty claims I'd like to be able to say I was using the provided power cable and 3) I've put $5k+ into a machine, waited two months for it to arrive, and would like to buy a second power cable that I have absolutely no worries about.

Or did you mean "why?" in the sense of "why can't they just sell us a cable outright?", in which case I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Agree with you, I was the original reply to OP and was politely admonished by everyone since then since I recommended only an OEM cable. Generic mains maybe $5 so for an extra $15, I have peace of mind. But then again, if others want to go generic, then by all means do so simply not what I would do myself.

Monoprice cables are horrible quality. You get precisely what you pay for.

Based on?

I've probably bought 20 different cables from them and none have had any issues. I know people who purchase from them. As there are countless people on forums who recommend them without hesitation.

In some cases like their HDMI cables having small thin cables is actually a plus because HDMI does not have any type of strain relief to hold the weight of the cable and housing like DVI or VGA does. So those big overkill Monster brand cables can start to bend the connector over time from the weight of the cable.

Some of my older "big brand" HDMI cables have about a 10-15* slant on the male part of the connector.

You should not need to hand over the old cable. The power cable is considered to be a "consumable" meaning Apple doesn't need your old one back. The part number itself tells you that it's a consumable. If the part number started with 661...that's another story.

Wish I had pushed the issue on this. The Apple store reps I spoke with on the phone said they couldn't do it unless I brought in the old one. Anyone had success just ordering the replacement?

Talk to genius bar? Call the online Apple Store?

Tell them your dog chewed it, and you threw it away. Or lost it during a move.

Success! Called AppleCare back (tech support, not sales), politely said I'd like to order a replacement cable. Wonderful girl asked me if anything was wrong with mine, I told her I didn't want to be dishonest; no, there was nothing wrong with it, but I had tried every other way to get one (and was willing to pay) and this seemed to be it.

She said she needed to put something as a reason, as the system didn't allow her to continue without one, so we came up with that I was fearful that having to continually pull on it to remove it from the outlet behind my desk every day would eventually lead to it failing.

She entered a few more details and presto! Ordered to my door. Thanks for the advice everyone- hope this helps someone else!

Edit: Also would like to give a shoutout to the AppleCare rep who helped me out. Fantastic service, and willing to use common sense for something like a power cable.

Although I would just use a cable from some other POS computer component, you sir are awesome.

Got the extra cable in today- postmark is from Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It did come with a return label for sending back the "defective" cable, and some writing that says if Apple determines that the item was not returned satisfactorily there would be a $20 charge. No worries, that's what I planned on spending in the first place, but I'm curious how they'll notify me if they do decide to charge it.
