I'm about to order a new 3.33GHz 6-core with Radeon 5870 for $2943 (corporate discount price). With another $168, I'll have 20GB (2+2+8+8) RAM in it, which is 8 more than I have in my current MP. I thought I was going to have to spend at least $1000 more. Admittedly, I'm getting less than I thought I would get, but what I am getting is still more than enough for me. Coming from a 1,1 what's there not to like?

I'm not very adventurous when it comes to this sort of stuff. If someone will do it for me and give me a 3-year warranty (for a price of Applcare), then yes. Otherwise not worth the risk.
Because it lacks industry standards, like SATAIII, USB 3.0.
No good GPU options, no dual GPU options.
Still raped on Ram if you buy from apple.
All is bad with the Mac Pro.
I was tongue in cheeking the Facebook poll. The hex is awesome. I've had mine for 2 years. You are just in the minority of having a level head and having the announcement work out in your favor.
I see that they've actually decreased the price of the RAM upgrade, but it still costs £80 to upgrade from 4 GB to 8 GB on normal MBPs. That's actually in line with the likes of Dell and HP, but you can save yourself some cash by doing it yourself.
One thing you should consider:
Buying a Mac Pro now, you buy a computer where you are:
Unable to upgrade CPU
Unable to upgrade GPU (with official cards)
Unable to get USB3 (without sacrificing PCIe-slots)
Unable to get Thunderbolt (no PCIe card for Mac afaik)
Unable to have SATA 3 (without tinkering)
Sure the Mac Pro is cheaper now. But is that good value for your money?

Since it wasn't announced in the Keynote itself, I wasn't expecting any Mac Pro update. Something is better than nothing.
I would have liked to see more updates on the Mac Pro, though. It seems to be more of an afterthought for Apple compared to their other devices.
Also, the Mac Pro is for the specialized workstation crowd. Most people go for the Mac Mini or iMac. I guess they feel the people going for Mac Pros do their own upgrading and have a professional setup. They may not find it worth the investment to include all these bells and whistles if the main audience is advanced computer users who want to customize.

Im a Mac Pro 1.1 user too, and a little shocked by the developments today. I believe this is the last of the current Mac Pro, and a new one will be with is next year.
However life goes on, I need to upgrade and nearly pulled the rigger over the last few weeks on the refurb store options. So for me like the OP here, this brings some clarity and finality to the choices I have.
The price drops on the single hex, the ram, and the sdd allow me to cto and get working on a new machine cheaper than the refurb store non cto options.

I was one of the million had there been a real update but since we had I dunno what you call it I'll just keep the Hack.
Isn't that what you got, no Mac Pro update? Dropping the base quad and upping the 12-core to slightly higher but nowhere near what is available rates as not an update in my book. I could right now order the same machine I bought (and really love using) almost two years ago.

Ask if you can swap them / add something else? I got a free apple bluetooth keyboard thrown in when I bought my macbook in 2007 at the apple store.

No worries mate. In a couple of years I'll sell this age-old POS for maybe a grand less than what I paid for it, and move to the next thing, whereas you'll be lucky to get $500 for your MBP. Keep waiting and keep cooking your thighs, while I enjoy the fastest Mac money can buy today.
Except for the 12 core models in multithreaded tasks and the MacBook Pros in single threaded tasks.
You do though have the fastest single socket Mac Pro that money can buy.

Only kidding. I have been toying with getting the same machine, until ML comes out my Mac Pro 2,1. Will just have to do.
Not so sure about the MBP. The 3.33GHz Xeons are turbo boosted to 3.6GHz vs. 3.7GHz for the MBP. I bet my MP will be able to maintain the max speed for a lot longer than a MBP, which will quickly get throtled back to 2.6GHz (while my MP settles out at 3.3GHz).
Yeah, the 12-core is the fastest Mac in GB tests, but I don't encode video or mutitrack audio, so for what I do the 6-core is the fastest Mac I could buy. Spending an extra $800-$2000 would be a waste in my situation.
