This is coming what a genius at the apple store told my sister, who's currently texting me about how they're going to fix my half dead MacBook Pro. She mentioned to the guy that I've been patiently waiting for the Mac Pro refresh. According to him I "Shouldn't hold my breath hoping for them to come out anytime soon" and that "The Rumors aren't even close to when it's coming out"

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Apple Store employees are usually kept in the dark about new products and their release dates? Either way, I find this more depressing than cost of the repairs for my half dead laptop.

He dosen't know anymore than we do. Nobody at the store level gets that kind of information period!

Don't ever believe what any employee in their retail stores tell you. I mean hell they are not even supposed to be reading rumors, according to protocol they should be more in the dark than you.

But logically why would they ever tell people a new one is right around the corner? It would just stop potential sales.

THEY GET good info, but not far in advance. a week or two and they can be very accurate. Mostly they may get the product in a pallet in advance. for a genius to know that the pro is dead or that the pro is not coming and be correct it means an announcement will come soon.

Our next door neighbor works at an Apple Store, and he says they get absolutely no information.

Yeah like everyone else is saying, he doesn't know more than we do. 2 good friends of mine are Genius's and they have told me multiple times, they only find out the night before launch.

My genius bar friends usually don't find out until after I text them about it while they're working. I'm only aware of 2 instances in the past 5 years where 1 of them knew before I did.

It wouldn't surprise me if a new Mac Pro is a long way away, Apple is baffling in the fact that they couldn't are less about their customers.

Honestly, this doesn't surprise me. Like others have stated, employees aren't even really supposed to be on the rumor sites. I could totally see how we would figure stuff out before they do.

Not really. The only thing I ever got in my 3 years working Apple Retail was a glance at a 20" iMac G4 in the storeroom/receiving bay night before launch. The ONLY person who would have any info is the Inventory Specialist...and even then, they'll see a new part number on the shipping list within a week of shipment and let us know that "something weird/new is coming this week". We all read rumor sites so we'd have an idea of what was coming down the pipe.

i doubt many apple engineers know release details either, every product goes by codenames internally and only those in the know, know what the codenames stand for. same thing applies at my company. i know the codenames but have no idea when they will be released.

But they do care about their customers, its just that they care a lot more about their new customer base the consumer/prosumer and perhaps the one man band outfits. If you dont fit into that category then tough luck, its just business after all.

As much as I want a new MP, it's just hard to neglect the fact that there has only been one update in over 3 years...and counting. :(

This is true, but I don't understand why the Mac Pro has never been updated. The development costs for something like that aren't very high. Apple makes the case, but other than that, its all developed and manufactured by other companies.

Very true.

When are the rest of the macs going to be announced? June? It seems to me just about every single mac is due for a bump. Maybe they will do them all at once. Not having the Mac Pro ready by now, if it is coming at all, is kind of a diss to us at this point don't you think?

I believe Apple is going to do a major Mountain Lion and updated Mac combo. ML is progressing and all the Macs are ready for an update.

I thought I read no ThB for 2011 socket until summer? That would be a logical reason for the delay? They can't very well propagate ThB as the new standard and then not have it on their flagship model.

The guy at my local McDonalds told me a new Mac Pro is coming out, and it's going to use G5s.

(The Genius at the Apple Store knows about as much as the guy at McDonalds. Geniuses never ever get any upcoming product information. Even most engineers at Cupertino outside the teams don't either.)

Amazing that this genius is the only one to come out and say this out of the thousands that exist.

Which is the other reason geniuses don't know anything. :)

It's possible the genius has a friend on the Mac Pro team, and knows for reasons other than being a genius, but being a genius doesn't mean anything special by itself. Geniuses are also forbidden on speculating on Apple rumors within the Apple store. It would be difficult to believe at all that he'd be in the know about what is actually coming out.

I hope not. When it comes to doing meaningful work on a business production machine, the introduction of a new OS means a ~6 month delay while waiting for Software updates to ship.

If the Mac Pro were the "flagship", wouldn't it then have received an update back in 2011 when TB shipped on laptops? Yes, I'm being rhetorical.

What I see out of much of this is that the development costs on the MP basically can't be insignificant. Low volume to amortize expenses across .... and is not the MP the last remaining Mac with PCI slots? As such, it takes the hit for all of the PCI compatibility stuff, etc.
