I'd love to know more too.
I'm thinking of getting a MBA for travel.
If I can get a good price on a current model, what the heck.
But if the new ones will be substantially better, then I'd go new.

Confirmed. Apple event to be held on Jan 26.

Whatever or wherever OP received his info, it is coming to life. Cnet confirmed Apple is having an event on the 26th.

FROM CNET
"Whatever news Apple has up its sleeve--tablet or no--it appears something will be announced on January 26, if an unnamed source of Fox News' turns out to be correct.

The Financial Times reported last week that Apple had rented out the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for several days in late January, immediately leading to speculation that the event might give the world the first glimpse of a tablet device rumored to be in the offing in Cupertino. And now, Fox News writer Clayton Morris says he has a source at Apple who's confirmed that an event will be held there Tuesday, January 26, and that it will be focused on the company's mobile offerings.

Speculation abounds about what an Apple tablet would entail and when it might arrive: the DigiTimes reports that Apple has placed an order for 10-inch displays and that devices would be ready to ship in March or April; several reports have surfaced that Apple told some of its key developers to prepare versions of their iPhone apps that will work on a device with a larger screen, in time for an event next month; and the MacRumors blog did a little sleuthing that turned up two patented trademarks that could be used for the name of the device and its associated software.

But the event will also answer some questions about how Apple intends to make product announcements in the future. The company has said it will no longer participate in the Macworld Expo held in San Francisco each January, leading some to question whether it would make an appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas or strike out on its own so it would no longer be tied to other organizations' schedules when making product announcements."

So, whether it is a new tablet or a new version of the MBA, I guess we'll just all blow this out of proportion and chat away with the speculation of what it is and what it might be able to do.

Great if true

the macbook air should have at least 4GB of ram, 2.2 ghz core 2duo, same 9400 graphics (or next gen ion2) one extra usb port, redesign ala macbook pro (clickpad), 7 hour battery or better, an SD card slot and a 1440 x 900 screen resolution (it's about time).

All of this in under $1600 and your got my money Apple

Yes, a new MBA

The MBA has been so popular and they've sold so many that they're going to have a huge event with enormous publicity to update it. Can't wait....

Um, I don't think they have sold "so many." In fact, I think Apple has had a complete failure with the MBA FROM A BUSINESS RETAIL SALES STANDPOINT. It is currently the worst selling Mac, debatable. Even after the huge price drops it fails to win out its fair share of the Mac or ultraportable markets.

The vast majority of MBAs sold have probably been the deeply discounted $999 rev A MBAs that Apple essentially had to dump after major failures... I will leave the bashing there. However, it was those sales that terribly damaged the MBA's reputation. People still don't understand that the v 2,1 MBAs are very capable Macs with the 9400m and Penryn SL 9x00 CPUs. I bet the brand would be worth ten times as much if the rev 2,1 MBA would have been the "original." Apple jumped the gun, but in the end the vision is what a Mac notebook will look like and how it will be used in the future.

I think if Apple had introduced it five years ago, it would have been a huge success (obviously the tech wasn't available as this is a reference to economic conditions). The economic collapse definitely ruined Apple's target buyers/market. And after huge price drops, it might actually have a niche market but at a much lower price point than Jobs/Apple envisioned.

However poor the start, Apple has laid the design for the future with the MBA as the model of future Mac notebooks. Apple definitely understands what us MBA lusters have known since we first laid eyes on our own MBA and fell hard... the MBA is addictive and FUN! And we talk about ours as it's our prize possession or in some threads we compare it with our significant other.

The removal of the optical drive frees up so much space, and the business model of Apple is to sell digital copies not optical disks of everything. I look forward to see what Apple has up its sleeve for the MBA... if anything in the way of design. If it were just my thoughts from a business standpoint, I would say the MBA should keep its form factor and improve its computing performance by adding RAM and beefing up the components. Hard to understand how much time Apple would even have for the MBA with the Tablet being the primary focus. On the other hand, I think the information coming from Apple is that an entirely new MBA is on the way. I don't know that this thread is an indication, but some other places do lead me to believe that. In fact, I believe the display will be the main focus of change in where Apple is going with displays. Could be 3D, OLED, or something else?

Finally, I believe that the masses who think the MBA will be replaced by a tablet are completely wrong. The MBA's FORM FACTOR will fill the traditional role of a Mac laptop. While the tablet takes over as a media and communications device. I would think that 15" and 17" MBAs will be on the horizon but labeled as MBPs.

Only those of us with MBAs can truly understand exactly what it means to own one. And those who think the MBA is going to be replaced by a tablet are dead wrong, and while they're thinking that, their MBP's form factor will be the only thing going away... and will be replaced by an MBA design.

Long live the MacBook Air!
