In a van down by the river
One more lucky thing happened. When I was moving it while working on it, the day before I contacted support but 2 days after problem started, lost my grip and it fell in the floor hitting a chair on the way down. Support agreed that it was working fine but there is a scuff and very slight dent on lid near hinge. I didn’t buy Apple Care+. I’m thinking I’m out a laptop and $12K. ?
When Apple sees that, they will probably say the repair cost is close to the price of a new one. If that happens, I would sell if for what you can get, and buy a new one and maybe get a catchers mitt as well. ;)

I still owe the whole amount. Didn’t even have it a week. I won’t spend more $$ in it. Great waste of money. Should’ve stuck to iPads. ?

I had the same problem with my new MacBook Air M1. This started after BigSur update. The place I bought it from would not help, saying since it was opened it was my problem. Apple Care was very suprised & upset when I told them that. Spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Apple Care support trying the following several times: resetting passwords, erasing HD & HD Data, repairing HD & HD data, reinstalling BigSur, deactivating Mac, creating new accounts, and more things that I can’t remember. Nothing worked to fix it. Would not recognize Apple password or Mac passwords during various steps. Tech support decided it needed to be sent in. Hoping it’s covered by warranty!
UPDATE:
It has been repaired by Apple no charge. The Logic board and Touch ID board were replaced - both listed as onboard SSD read/write problem. Glad it have it back. Hope things go well from here on. ??

As a heads up for anyone who comes across this. I went into Recovery mode and selected options and logged in the with same account and password there and it suddenly started working again. I also ran a diagnostic test after to see if any errors came up and got nothing. This was on the M1 MacBook Air

I am having the same issue after erasing and reinstalling MacOS through I was able to get an account name and password entered but it never took. It kept saying the name was unavailable. Which I tried 3 times with 3 names. None worked.

i then force restarted and there to my surprise there they were all 3 accounts. but since I stopped the process by force restart it seems it never took the passwords I used and since I skipped using AppleID to sign in to iCloud it doesn’t even ask for that. Now when I try to go to terminal from the M1 Options menu, and do the resetpassword It has me reset all 3 passwords for on each account. When all are green I press continue or forward arrow and after a moment it says: Could not verify credentials because directory server does not support the requested authentication method. And the only options are to go back or exit. Anyone have any ideas? any other things in terminal I can do? I don’t want to erase and reinstall because I feel it will cause even more trouble. any and all help would be appreciated.

This fixed it. thanks to this guys post —— https://anadoxin.org/blog/big-sur-on-apple-m1.html/

where basically from the resetpassword dialog window it offers an option on the drop down of recovery assistant that lets you erase Mac and then it boots back into activating your Mac. Lets see if this works. So far so good.

I had the same with my first faulty MacBook Air . Got it back after a screen replacement, noticed it was replaced with a screen with dead pixels. Emptied the whole thing again, formatted and installed Big Sur.
Made a default account on the computer, to check if I erased it good.

but for the life of me, I couldn’t log in anymore. Formatted and installed Big Sur again, and it kept asking me for the password :/.

formatted again, and thankfully I got my refund back.

Well this only got me so far. After getting back into recovery mode it would not allow me to re-install MacOS as there was no admin account or any account at this point. i went to try and erase Macintosh HD and I ended Up with the official name of the Apple SSD APO256Q Media and a container disk3. And below the disk image for the base system. from here it will not allow me to reinstall the OS as it does not recognize any drives to install to. Gosh I might of messed this up more than when I first started. Anyone have any suggestions? thanks in advance for any help.

Sorry for posting so much. I renamed the container Disk3 to Macintosh HD and I was able to get the system to begin reinstalling MacOS Big Sur. Did not create any partitions for Macintosh Data. But the install is on its way. Fingers crossed!

Well it finally did work after all this. I wasn’t able to create a Data Partition so it maybe all living in on ”container” but hey it works.
