Likely since the faster drives seem to have entered the production line about 2 months ago. That said, eventually the newer models will work their way into the system as refurbs.

Having said that, don't let the possibility of getting the Toshiba drive deter you from getting a MacBook Air. The Toshiba is still a very good SSD, and it holds up well to severe use.

Well, for those stuck with the older SSD, what can they do?

If you buy from a reseller you are most likely going to get an older model.

Still very happy with the original Toshiba SSD on the 2010s here... its a known quantity and has that excellent garbage collection for now to compensate for the current lack of TRIM support. Waiting for Lion and full TRIM support.

I wouldn't suggest letting the SSD be a deciding factor, aside from benchmarks, most people will never likely be able to tell the difference.

I actually feel a bit duped by Apple has they have superseeded my technology so soon after selling it to me and they didn't even announce it or anything.

No offense meant - but that totally blows my mind. The MBA is any way shape or form today is NOT a heavy gaming platform, and a faster SSD won't do you much good... its the CPU/GPU combination being nowhere near capable enough.

You won't notice a speed difference.

Just bought the ultimate 13" 3 days ago and just today finished loading everything. Read this article, go and check only to see Toshiba. While the extra speed wont make or break anything, it is still very frustrating. I can see down the road when I try and sell this laptop getting the question, "Is the SSD Samsung?". Can't help but feel like the value of my brand new laptop just went down other then the typical used. While I could take it back and get a new one it's not really worth it to reload everything.

Can't really blame Apple for this though, they are just switching vendors and getting an additional speed boost as a bonus. Just sucks not to have the latest and greatest when you just bought something from their retail store!

BTO 1.6/4/128 11" Air I bought last week (and listed as 0 weeks old in CoconutBattery) has the Apple SSD TS128C drive.

Shame (but still way faster than the HDD on my iMac lol).

I've got one 13" Ultimate bought about 2 weeks ago and this one has that Samsung SSD inside, but I don't have any feeling of ultimately blazing speeds though - random writing patterns seem to be a sort of struggle. But I haven't run any benchmarking tests, just a subjective feeling.

The reason why this particular case took so long was due to Anand's busyness. At first, I was going to start in January but Anand was way too busy (CES and all that) so it was pushed back again and again. Finally Anand got back to me late last month and about a week ago I signed the contract.

If we had signed it earlier, I would have covered this right when it was discovered. Actually, I even tipped MR and couple of other Apple sites about this back then but none of them published anything (not a complete article, just linked to that thread and said it might be worth covering).

And a GPU that struggles to compare with the Nvidia 9400m released three years ago..

I have said this before, and I hate to say it again, but if Intel wasn't an entity hellbent on acting illegally and anti-competitively Apple could have went with "current" Core i7 CPUs last year. Intel requires Apple to now use its chipset thus forcing its IGP to use the new CPUs even though it had a legally binding agreement with Nvidia to permit competition. Intel couldn't compete fairly so it decided to screw Nvidia, PC manufacturers like Apple, and most importantly consumers. They are a disgusting company, and I would prefer Apple do business with AMD for its low end Macs rather than permit Intel's actions by doing business with them.

So why don't you look at the facts about the market and factors before calling the tech dated. Apple currently has the best all around ultraportable in the MBA because the C2D is paired with the Nvidia 320m which is what competition is all about. Consumers lose big and most aren't even smart enough to know it because they use Intel's marketing as factual or believe biased Intel funded websites as though they're independent reported.

It doesn't matter whether or not the new graphics chip will be inferior or not- consumers just see the 'NEW' tag and assume it is better and pay more.

I don't see the previous gen 13 Pros with the 320M selling for more than the current 13 Pros with the HD3000
