so, today i went into the apple store and bought myself a new macbook pro, 15" 2.4ghz etc etc... asked them to whack it up to 4GB ram but they didn't have the ram yet...

anyway, got the thing home... first thing i notice on my screen, a dead pixel!! little red dot. cheeky little sod.

will apple swap it for me do you think?? (not the pixel, the laptop).

I doubt it as Apple's dead pixel is replacement policy is set at four or so. Seeing as it's new though, Apple may replace it if you're nice, just don't set your hopes too high.

Also, I'm curious about all these dead pixels. Of all the Macs I've owned, I've never had so much as a stuck pixel, never mind a dead one. Maybe I'm just lucky...

Try programs that fix stuck pixels. To my knowledge a DEAD pixel is black, but a STUCK pixel can vary in colour. Stuck pixels can be fixed quite easily.

i tried swearing at it. alas, it didn't work.

yeah i have a feeling they might try saying something about having a minimum amount of dead pixels... i'll see what they say tomorrow.

maybe they'll throw in that extra 2gb of ram for free.... hah.

ah ok, i'll have a looksee. yeah my 'dead' pixel is bright red. a really annoying red at that.

You should have insisted on opening it before paying for it.

If it is defective, refuse to pay for it, and worse comes to worst, run out of the store!

Yeah, that doesn't work. If you went through 3 or 4 MBPs just to find one without a dead or stuck pixel, Apple would be forced to sell those opened products at a loss. You can insist until you're blue in the face, they won't and shouldn't let you do it.

DO NOT DEAL WITH THE STORES they will ridicule you. Call Apple on the phone and argue with them over it, they are much friendlier and courteous people.

:apple:

It is not your fault, maybe Apple will get the f***ing idea that it is better to spend $40 more on a Grade-A LCD panel than to save that penny and deal with mountains of discounted open box machines.

Use your credit card to pay for it. If apple won't do anything about it then dispute the charge with your credit card company....

Yeah....they don't care. Trust me. They still won't let you go through every computer in the stock room so you can find one that you think is perfect...sorry.

Do these unsticker programs actually fix anything? I'm skeptical. In fact, I think it's utter BS unless somebody can provide an example.

Ive had success, not even so much with PC monitors. Its worked wonders for my other products such as a PSP.

I can't tell if you're serious or not. Dead pixels don't occur only on lower quality LCD panels...... you can go buy a $4000 laptop with the highest quality LCD around and it's still possible to get a dead pixel.

If laptop manufacturers threw out every LCD panel with even a single dead or stuck pixel, the costs of laptops would rise dramatically.

Whether dead pixels occur or not doesn't have anything to do with Apple skimping on LCD panels to save $40.

Yo OP. Everytime I buy a notebook from apple here is the deal.

You can bring it back the next day and swap it if its defective. I have done it twice at 2 different apple stores. There is no charge. If you feel uneasy about swapping for a pixel, tell them there is something else wrong with it. Trust me they won't hassle you. Good luck.

try rubbing it, or use a pixel un-sticker (search google video for this)

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO! Rubbing it never works, it will only cause further stuck/dead pixels. Also, if you have only one stuck/dead pixel, Apple is not obliged to do anything about it.

Please please please please do not "rub" the dead pixel to fix it. you will only regret this later.
