I like my iPhone. Waiting for the custome ringtones update, but otherwise it's great. You?

OP change the title of your thread. Even with the question mark the title is presented as a statement rather than a question. Your title misleads people into thinking something else, either by accident or simply to get more attention, hopefully not the latter. Doing this might help resolve some of the animosity your have received in recent posts.

Don't personally have an iPhone but heard great reviews from friends of mine. If only the price was $100 or....$400 dollars less ^_^

I can't believe that i am looking at Alienware laptops and starting to drool. Maybe I am just falling for the looks and the cool gaming specs I don't know. But I do know that the few things that get my blood pumping are the:

(1) Dual 2.5 inch Hard Disk Drives and the plethora of configs for them. Raid 0 to get up to 500GB with the Western Digital drives or 400GB @ 7200 rpm. Freaking WOW man... that is just the best thing ever... As an editor the idea of having a scratch disk running at 7200 rpm with 200GB of space and a system drive at the same size and speed is just a dream come true. I would never need an external drive again.

(2) The SLI graphics from nVidia. I like the idea of having a Gigabyte of graphics memory at my disposal. I am not a hardware nut that can spit random facts about what is current what is this and that. All I do know is that they say a Gig, and my eyes bug out.

(3) The average cute stuff that doesn't really help with productivity but really helps when you just want to play around and have fun. Built-in DVR, a full sized keyboard and number pad (with all of that space they could fit one), and that freakin GIG OF Graphics MEMORY!!

I still love the 17 inch, and when my current book gets too old, slow, broken, warranty runs out, whatever I will get the next real update to the MacBook Pro and I hope that Apple puts more than one drive in the 17" book and maybe some serious gamer graphics. The current book is wonderful, but I was too expecting some more innovation, not just a Santa Claus chip and some usual upgrades. But that is okay for me.... Apple will give us some new hardware for real productivity soon. Not in October, maybe not even in April in next year, but they will give it.

The problem is, SLI-gaming laptops like that are for a VERY niche audience - and you end up with machines that are usually over 12 pounds, well over 2" thick, etc. The only real market for these machines is usually people who need a semi-portable machine that they can take to LAN parties, etc.

These are boutique, specialty machines.

I can't agree with the idea that Apple is somehow not giving us "new hardware for real productivity".

Well, looks like this thread has strayed and meandered over the hills and through the woods to grandma's house.

*Title has been updated.

The alienware s do look nice, but honestly I could duct tape my desktop to my monitor and carry it around calling it a laptop and it wouldn't be much bigger. I think I will stick with the sexiness of the macbook!

Well, what's intriguing is that the specs for both the Alienware m9700 and m9750 both list them at 8.5lbs. Unfortunately it doesn't mention what the final weight would be after adding a second video card and hard drive. Another observation is that CPU in the m9750 maxes out at 2.33GHz yet can accomodate 4GB of ram. I wouldn't mind seeing a second hard drive in the MBP but after seeing pictures of them disassembled, I'm not sure there's any available room in there. The Alienware m9750 and m9700 have the following dimensions: H:1.5" W:15.65" D:11.75" while the 17" MBP is H:1" W:15.4" D:10.4". If they're fairly similar in size with the exception of depth I wonder where Alienware has the second hard drive located?

Well, that extra depth helps a fair amount.

Note that Toshiba and HP, for example, also have a few models with multiple hard drives, including some smaller laptops.

The BIOS on some older non-Santa Rosa laptops could accommodate 4GB of RAM, so that's what you're seeing there.

Okay, okay...geez. Flame war threads are no fun. How bout them iPhones?

I think the iPhone is more of a let down then the Santa Rosa MacBook Pros. It has the greatest UI and touch screen navigation that i have ever seen, but Cingular just ruins it and the actual phone part is very lacking.

You will get those sooner than you think. I am waiting for Sprint to get it on their network (5 years... I know :( ) and for the thing to be either less expensive... or have iWork 08 Mobile.

I do agree with the weight thing which is why I have sorta long since given up on Apple packing in a bunch of powerful (niche yes... but very powerful) hardware into the already very useful 17" MacBook Pro. I would still give an extra $700 for a second built-in HDD. The possibilities are endless and the configuration options would be just lovely.

Well, there's always this option of adding a second hard drive. I probably would consider this since I rarely use my Superdrive.

Edit: Wish they had an option for larger and faster hard drives besides the 160GB @ 5400RPM.

Here's my problem with this kind of logic.

I assume wherever you are, AT&T/Cingular doesn't have good coverage, and Sprint does, so for you, the iPhone is a disappointment.

But where I live, for example (Northern Virginia), there are entire areas where Sprint coverage is either non-existent or incredibly spotty. But AT&T coverage is much more widespread.

It would be great if Apple could have made an unlocked GSM and an unlocked CDMA version of the iPhone, but that just wasn't going to happen any time soon.

I just wish some people could realize though that just because AT&T is bad for them, it doesn't mean their preferred network would work well for everyone else.

If Apple had signed some deal with Sprint instead, I'd be saying the exact same thing as you - great phone, but I can't use it because Sprint's coverage is abysmal in large parts of where I would use it.

I am sorry for asking for help. I have called you defensive and rude because you are. Only a few people on this thread have had anything constructive or helpful to say. I must apologize for asking a question. I should have known that asking a question and expecting real answers from nice people, not the dicks most of you have turned out to be would be impossible.

I do NOT think I know more than the pros here. The very basis of this thread was ASKING for information, hence the implied statement that I admit you know more than I do. I have no idea where you got that I think I know more than these people. I probably know more about being a decent human being than 95% of the people on this thread, but for computers, no, I admit that I know the least of any of you most likely

No one said anything about you not being allowed to ask a question, but its kind of hard to answer that question and be sincere, when the person asking the question is not sincere or nice, or even looking for answer himself. All you were doing is dismissing everyone else's opinion and accepting your own. People here were trying to help by showing you that there is no point in waiting for a computer like that becuase it will not happen. But you on the other hand decided to call those people defensive and rude and come up with this post judging people's qualities of a human being. This is not the place for that. Many of these people are probably nicer than you, because when they ask a question they actually listen and look for answers rather than dismiss them and call the people rude and defensive, which you clearly are. All of us were trying to help but seeing as you dont care and just choose to attack us on the basis of proving you wrong, I doubt people will be helping you in the future. I really hope that you can see that this is a fun community to be a party of and very helpful, and choose to apologize and thank everyone for their help.

I completely agree Zad. Bar having an unlocked phone, Apple couldn't make everyone happy, and the fact is, AT&T/Cingular is the largest cell provider, and has the best national coverage of any probider, so it only makes sense that Apple would go with them, to keep the most people possible happy. Plus, I'm sure the 7-8 figure AT&T threw up for exclusivity didn't hurt either.

I do thank everyone that did help. But people who start the thread with "Im so ****ing sick of this or that" are not helping. Nor are the people throwing out insults because they do not see the upgrades I listed as possible, which they very well may not be. Most posters came here as **** disturbers with nothing better to do than start something. I was not calling anyone rude because they thought I was wrong, but because they were just flat out rude when I was trying to see what the hype about the new MBPs was when I really didn't see an improvement worth all the attention its been getting. People suddenly got the attitude of " You dare insult the Almighty santa rosa MBP? How dare you" or "I am not going to list anything showing that it is worthy of being called an "upgrade" but get angry none the less, and say its far better than any upgrade ever in the galaxy whole existance since the dawn of time to the power of infinity". I never attacked anyone based on their opinion, but rather asked them to prove their statements, which is when they began to get defensive. Honestly I'm done with most of you cum guzzling gutter sluts. If you have anything else un-productive to post, go waste your miserable life somewhere else, and quit spamming my post. However, all polite, intelligent posts, (like the ones we've gotten recently, with the exeption of MD1626) then please feel free to post. From now on, any pointless posts will be disreguded. OK, back to the discussion

Edit:
Someone lock or delete this thread please. It has gotten WAY off course. This wasn't meant to be a "Let's discuss the validity of the new MBP" thread, and I do not see any way of regaining it's course.

I'm sure people will respect you and want to post on you're threads after this...Now who's being rude?

Edit: I'm also pretty sure disreguded is not a word. It's actually disregarded judging by your context. :)

thanks MD1626. Thats the first useful thing you've said all day. As for future posts, let me worry about that. The way I see it, no pri*ks will bother posting in my threads now, so I see it as a win overall.
Have a pleasant day,

Haha the funny thing is you can't win because all of us have clearly proven you wrong. Not only that but now almost every member that will see that post will see that you are an inconsiderate ass that doesn't deserve a response, so you wont get help again. But please enjoy "winning" and have your "pleasant day". Haha pathetic

Edit: Also my name isn't in capital letters, but as you have proven time and time again, you are unable to read or write. So I'll let it go ;)

Dude, I don't care enough about you to pay attention to the details of your name. And what do you mean by proven me wrong? You cannot prove opinions wrong, which is all I have posted. I have openly admitted that most users on this forum know more than I do, and have not been rude to anyone but the idiot that started his response with "I'm so fuc*ing sick of this" and your sorry as*. You are a worthless excuse for a human being. Have fun amounting to nothing in life bit*h.

I agree with you completely... I should put my main reason down for not liking Cingular that much. It isn't because of the service. I live in an area that gets pretty good service no matter where I am. The main reason is the lack of insurance for the phone. Sprint gives me insurance for any phone I get no matter what the price for $6 a month. If anything happens to the phone I call the insurance provider, send them $50 and they send me a brand new or refurbished phone. I can usually do this three times a year before they just figure I am getting free phones from them and stop sending me phone.

All in all I would have walked out with the iPhone the day I put my grubby tech loving hands on it. But that insurance thing with Cingular, the hassle of having to switch from one mediocre cell provider that I have been with for 2 years, to another mediocre cell company I have never been with, and the slight lack of real phone features that may not get fixed until Version 2, has kept my wallet closed.

I love the device, and I hope that other cell phone makers get the idea that they will have to start making real phones to compete. I hope that the market gets tossed around and they all start innovating because of the iPhone. But I just can't justify the cost and loss of certain services for it. I can be patient and wait the 5 years for it to come to Sprint or for Sprint to go 3G or 4G, or I can find a better by slightly clumsier phone.

As for the guys arguing... why are you so angry? The new MBP is faster than the old ones by a lot, but it was still a paltry update... Apple could have done better.

I completely agree Zad. Cingular's amount of customers has nothing to do with their service or coverage. Apple chose them because they were the only ones that wanted to give into Apple's demands. They made a good choice. But as for networks... Sprint's is the fastest and offers the best data plans that I have seen so far.

Microsoft has more customers than Apple... does it make Microsoft a better company?

Exactly. The OP is disappointed because Apple did not put a faster processor in.... there are no faster processors in existence (for the MBP). Apple put the fastest & newest processors that are currently available in the computer.

It sounds to me that you (the OP) don't really have a clear understanding about what this technology is. You have proven that by talking about being disappointed because the MBPs did not get upgrades that are not even in existence right now.

If you truly understood what is in the computer, you would know that it is a top of the line laptop and that it was a major upgrade.

What's OP?
