I can't believe that i am looking at Alienware laptops and starting to drool. Maybe I am just falling for the looks and the cool gaming specs I don't know. But I do know that the few things that get my blood pumping are the:
(1) Dual 2.5 inch Hard Disk Drives and the plethora of configs for them. Raid 0 to get up to 500GB with the Western Digital drives or 400GB @ 7200 rpm.Freaking WOW man... that is just the best thing ever... As an editor the idea of having a scratch disk running at 7200 rpm with 200GB of space and a system drive at the same size and speed is just a dream come true. I would never need an external drive again.
(2) The SLI graphics from nVidia. I like the idea of having a Gigabyte of graphics memory at my disposal. I am not a hardware nut that can spit random facts about what is current what is this and that. All I do know is that they say a Gig, and my eyes bug out.
(3) The average cute stuff that doesn't really help with productivity but really helps when you just want to play around and have fun. Built-in DVR, a full sized keyboard and number pad (with all of that space they could fit one), and that freakin GIG OF Graphics MEMORY!!
I still love the 17 inch, and when my current book gets too old, slow, broken, warranty runs out, whatever I will get the next real update to the MacBook Pro and I hope that Apple puts more than one drive in the 17" book and maybe some serious gamer graphics. The current book is wonderful, but I was too expecting some more innovation, not just a Santa Claus chip and some usual upgrades. But that is okay for me.... Apple will give us some new hardware for real productivity soon. Not in October, maybe not even in April in next year, but they will give it.
Well, looks like this thread has strayed and meandered over the hills and through the woods to grandma's house.
Well, what's intriguing is that the specs for both the Alienware m9700 and m9750 both list them at 8.5lbs. Unfortunately it doesn't mention what the final weight would be after adding a second video card and hard drive. Another observation is that CPU in the m9750 maxes out at 2.33GHz yet can accomodate 4GB of ram. I wouldn't mind seeing a second hard drive in the MBP but after seeing pictures of them disassembled, I'm not sure there's any available room in there. The Alienware m9750 and m9700 have the following dimensions: H:1.5" W:15.65" D:11.75" while the 17" MBP is H:1" W:15.4" D:10.4". If they're fairly similar in size with the exception of depth I wonder where Alienware has the second hard drive located?
Okay, okay...geez. Flame war threads are no fun. How bout them iPhones?
I like my iPhone. Waiting for the custome ringtones update, but otherwise it's great. You?
The problem is, SLI-gaming laptops like that are for a VERY niche audience - and you end up with machines that are usually over 12 pounds, well over 2" thick, etc. The only real market for these machines is usually people who need a semi-portable machine that they can take to LAN parties, etc.
These are boutique, specialty machines.
I can't agree with the idea that Apple is somehow not giving us "new hardware for real productivity".
I think the iPhone is more of a let down then the Santa Rosa MacBook Pros. It has the greatest UI and touch screen navigation that i have ever seen, but Cingular just ruins it and the actual phone part is very lacking.
You will get those sooner than you think. I am waiting for Sprint to get it on their network (5 years... I know) and for the thing to be either less expensive... or have iWork 08 Mobile.
I am sorry for asking for help. I have called you defensive and rude because you are. Only a few people on this thread have had anything constructive or helpful to say. I must apologize for asking a question. I should have known that asking a question and expecting real answers from nice people, not the dicks most of you have turned out to be would be impossible.
I do NOT think I know more than the pros here. The very basis of this thread was ASKING for information, hence the implied statement that I admit you know more than I do. I have no idea where you got that I think I know more than these people. I probably know more about being a decent human being than 95% of the people on this thread, but for computers, no, I admit that I know the least of any of you most likely
Honestly I'm done with most of you cum guzzling gutter sluts. If you have anything else un-productive to post, go waste your miserable life somewhere else, and quit spamming my post.
Here's my problem with this kind of logic.
I assume wherever you are, AT&T/Cingular doesn't have good coverage, and Sprint does, so for you, the iPhone is a disappointment.
But where I live, for example (Northern Virginia), there are entire areas where Sprint coverage is either non-existent or incredibly spotty. But AT&T coverage is much more widespread.
It would be great if Apple could have made an unlocked GSM and an unlocked CDMA version of the iPhone, but that just wasn't going to happen any time soon.
I just wish some people could realize though that just because AT&T is bad for them, it doesn't mean their preferred network would work well for everyone else.
If Apple had signed some deal with Sprint instead, I'd be saying the exact same thing as you - great phone, but I can't use it because Sprint's coverage is abysmal in large parts of where I would use it.

I completely agree Zad. Bar having an unlocked phone, Apple couldn't make everyone happy, and the fact is, AT&T/Cingular is the largest cell provider, and has the best national coverage of any probider, so it only makes sense that Apple would go with them, to keep the most people possible happy. Plus, I'm sure the 7-8 figure AT&T threw up for exclusivity didn't hurt either.
If you were to sit down and compare the 2.2, 128mb GT8600 2GB ram Santa Rosa, with a 2.33ghz, 2gb ram, and 256 Radeon, which one would win graphics wise? Or overall performance wise for that matter?
Exactly. The OP is disappointed because Apple did not put a faster processor in.... there are no faster processors in existence (for the MBP). Apple put the fastest & newest processors that are currently available in the computer.
It sounds to me that you (the OP) don't really have a clear understanding about what this technology is. You have proven that by talking about being disappointed because the MBPs did not get upgrades that are not even in existence right now.
If you truly understood what is in the computer, you would know that it is a top of the line laptop and that it was a major upgrade.
